INDIEWIRE CRITICS POLL
This isn’t an awards but we thought we’d share. I participated as usual and the lists are MUCH more interesting than the winners (as is usually the case) since the more people you poll, the more likely you are to reach the same consensus you’re seeing elsewhere... but for the record the #1 spots went like so

Picture Parasite (runner up: The Irishman)
Director Bong Joon Ho (runner up: Martin Scorsese)
Screenplay Parasite (runner up: Marriage Story)
Actress Lupita Nyongo, Us (runner up: Scarlett Johansson)
Actor Adam Driver, Marriage Story (runner up: Antonio Banderas)
Supporting Actress Laura Dern, Marriage Story (runner up: Jennifer Lopez)
Supporting Actor Joe Pesci, The Irishman (runner up: Brad Pitt)
Cinematography 1917 (runner up: Once Upon a Time)
Documentary Apollo 11 (runner up: American Factory)
First Feature Atlantics (runner up: Booksmart)
Foreign Film Parasite (runner up: Pain and Glory)

Still I think the lists themselves are interesting if maddening. Like Elisabeth Moss being in 3rd place for Best Actress for Her Smell even though no critics organization has honored despite the endless raves they gave her when they first saw her performance. Or Song Kang Ho showing up on both the Lead and Supporting Actor roster though he is hardly more of a lead than people who only show up in supporting polls (like Brad Pitt & Willem Dafoe) which just serves as an obvious reminder that it’s the Oscar campaign machine that perpetually skews critical thinking about what constitutes a lead character versus a supporting player. It’s always been strange to us that critics -- who like to think themselves superior to Oscar voters -- fall for it each year, unable to see they’re playing the Oscar game rather than genuinely sharing their own “bests”.

After Lupita, it seems it is Johansson who's doing better with critics from the Best Actress contenders.
And it's nice to see some Dafoe love .... I was getting tired of Pitt Vs Pesci first critics groups

Wow, the Best Supporting Actress tide could turn, hard, toward J-Lo. I somehow couldn’t picture it until she started getting critics prizes in her own right. She has all the right precursor prizes plus a handful of critics awards she didn’t need to win.

Dern is very awardable and so is Marriage Story. But so were Metcalf and Lady Bird! Not a perfect comparison but stranger things have happened. And Dern’s critics prize lead is less commanding than Laurie’s was.

I’m honestly not sure how this race will break. My head says Dern but my gut is starting to say Lopez.

How is it the Dallas Fort Worth Film Critics Association and North Texas Film Critics Association aren't one big group? Was their a feud?

And I still don't know why I have the feeling JLo will be snubed at the Oscars... She's getting everything right and I liked her performance, but something tells me she will miss! Still... Hoping Zhao makes the final Oscar Best Supporting Actress shortlist

Lupita is sweeping all the critics wins ala Huppert circa 2016. I tink it'll b hard for the Academy to deny her a nom.

At least thr r still many pple beating the drums for Moss n Woodard. Poor Mary Kay Place only recv a prize fr LAFCA n it's a shame tt her buzz has died down. Glad to see she's ranking high at 7 in this poll! 😁

I wouldn’t worry about JLo. Not only is she a powerhouse in the film, she’s likely to be Hustlers‘ only nomination and voters will see that as an easy way to recognize the project as a whole. I’d even go so far as to say she’s Dern’s biggest threat for the win. It depends on how well Marriage Story hangs on to its luster in the next two months.

Who knows if there was a feud, but I live in Dallas and this metropolitan area only has seven million people. We don't even have multiple MLB, NBA and NFL teams, let alone does this region need more than one film critics org.

Dern is a lot more like Allison Janney than Laurie Metcalf in that she has a ton of connections in tv and film, rather than theater... but she also has the advantages of appearing in two acclaimed films this year, plus a buzzy tv show, and, unlike Janney, she is a critics' favorite. To me, she seems like the most solid frontrunner.

Don’t discount J-LO... she has worked with a lot of former oscar winners... Redford, Fonda, McConanahey.... she’s very well liked in the industry

Dern is likely to win SAG and BAFTA, unless Marriage Story seriously underperforms with the latter (and even if it does, perhaps). That will probably seal up the Oscar for her.

I think we knew Lopez's campaign would have a glitzy HFPA veneer to it—that puts the Globe in reach. I didn't expect critical passion for Hustlers (LAFCA, a damn Spirit nomination) to be such a factor—that puts BFCA in play. And Gaga won Best Actress there last year, so they love their stars too. Hustlers has a similar, memey, Extremely Online following among critics that ASIB had last year.

My money is mostly on Dern but the race may not be so straightforward, depending on how HFPA and BFCA go. If they go for Dern, it's basically over.

I think Florence Pugh takes the BAFTA.

I thought Zellweger was going to sweep the critics' awards but I'm glad it's not like that.

Watching the prizes that Lupita has won, I wonder: wouldn't it be great if a previous supporting winner won a second Oscar as lead iwere Lupita Nyong'o instead of Renée Zellweger?

I can't see Lopez losing the GG.Sag will go to Dern,Bafta who knows.

December 17, 2019 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Isn’t Laura Dern in the new Star Wars film? That would give her 3 big films this season...

December 17, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTOM

Claran, Collette did extremely well in the critics awards last year and didn’t seem to even come close to a nom. I think Lupita has a better shot but the academy doesn’t care for horror performances

Where is Mary Kay Place....every year the best performance is ignored....for a lack of Mary Kay I'll go full Scarlett and she'll lose cause I curse them...sorry beautiful actress that I love....

December 17, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

My best actress this year would go to Julianne Moore in Gloria Bell.

Nathaniel - Brad Pitt won the SFBAFCC best supporting actor prize not Willem Dafoe: https://www.sfbafcc.com/awards/2019-awards/
