SONG KANG-HO!!!

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDevin D

Torontonians love Parasite, I’m happy to say. This is the first non-Marvel movie in a long time I’ve heard this many people discuss and get excited about.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterBrad

Claire Mathon was cited for both Portrait and Atlantics by LAFCA.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRicopolo

I haven't seen Marriage Story yet, but wow... Laura Dern is really having a moment isn't she? Based on what I've heard, this isn't the type of role that would signify sweeping victory, especially from critics, so it's clear that the industry really loves her and she's been having a moment over the past few years.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Banderas over Driver (or Phoenix) is just insane.

Thank God for the J-Lo win

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

MARY KAY WON!!!!!!

I deserve it! I only get shit here lately

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Philip H. - I love Dern to pieces, but I can honestly say the performance I saw would never cross my mind as an Oscar contender if it weren’t for the narrative that’s taken hold. Merritt Wever and Martha Kelly do more with less, I think. And where are Alan Alda’s citations?

At any rate, LAFCA’s choices are superlative so far! Yay, Lopez! Song Kang-Ho! Banderas! Mathon! (Please don’t go the obvious route in Actress).

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMJ

I concur on the "thank god for the JLo win" sentiment. Yesss, exactly what I was hoping for

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Damn the critics are really going for Lupita. I wasn't expecting that. Wondering who she'll bump for the Oscars.

Very happy to see some love for Lopez.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered Commentereurocheese

I'm disappointed Lupita isn't going to win "the big three", especially since Lafca has never given their best actress prize to a Black actress. At least Mary Kay Place is a really good choice. Happy for Song Kang Ho and J.Lo too.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMax

Lupita Nyong'o is like now the favorite for the Academy Award ? Jesus!

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRafaello

On second thought maybe I only get shit on here because I deserve it. I realize I can be but if a cunt sometimes sorry guys

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Worth noting that no film has won the Oscar for Best Picture without winning an award from one of the Big 3 critics' organizations since Crash. Jojo Rabbit and 1917 did not win any awards from New York or Los Angeles this week, while their main competitors were all cited.

I wish Hustlers would hurry up and become available to rent. I really want to see it again.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterjules

Nothing so far for The Goldfinch?

I kid, I kid

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne (The Real One)

I am so happy that Mary Kay Place was recognized for a really unforgettable performance. I can't shake some of her scenes in this film and do wish more would check out Diane, which was (is?) streaming on Hulu.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterzig

Mary Kay wins makes my year!

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterStjeans

I saw Marriage Story and... What is the buzz all about?

Loved Scarjo, Ray Liotta and Alda, but the rest...

Laura dern? Adam driver? The direction?

In a year with The Irishman, Parasite, Pain and Glory, Portray of a lady on fire, The Lighthouse and 1917, the critics love that Woody Allen's minis film?

The critics should put their 🍑 on the chair again and study urgently what a great movie is.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJay

" Parasite" is the best movie of the year - it works on so many levels, social comedy, thriller and drama. It's both shocking and surprisingly moving.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

KNIVES OUT wins a Best Picture citation? Yikes. If we're going to get something from left field, shouldn't it be THE LIGHTHOUSE, SYNONYMS, THE NIGHTINGALE, ASH IS PUREST WHITE, CLIMAX, or BOOKSMART? KNIVES OUT was... okay at best.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

The love Laura Dern is getting for Marriage Story baffles me. It is a fine performance, reminiscent of her Renata character in Big Little Lies, but not exceptional or truly worthy of an award. Shao Zsushen, J Lo and Margot Robbie are so much better.

I’m pleased that Lupita Nyong’o is getting all these awards, but it feels like she is this year’s Toni Collette. Crossing my fingers though that she gets at least an Oscar nomination.

Adam Driver is so far my favorite male performer for Marriage Story. Looking forward to seeing Antonio Banderas in Pain & Glory.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered Commentergoodbar

Mary Kay’s win makes my day!!!

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered Commentercb

I thought Laura Dern was terrific in Marriage Story, but it is always a little bit frustrating when one actor just sweeps the critics awards. But to suggest that she is somehow bad in the movie is puzzling to me. Also, she's nothing like Renata in this film IMO. Nora is cool, sharp, and collected and always the smartest person in the room. Renata has an emotional breakdown every 5 seconds.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

D.C. and Philly also have announced. Consensus so far seems to be Driver, Nyong'o, Pitt, and Dern with the odd Pesci, Pugh, and Lopez thrown in.

I think that, unlike Toni Collette, Lupita has the benefit of being in a much bigger commercial hit that, even for its flaws, audiences seemed to like more than Hereditary.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

Peggy and I are constantly being targeted by this sicko and you haven't defended us not even once. It is very disappointing.

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Suzanne -- i'm not sure what to do. I cant take the time to redesign the site during the heat of the season when I can barely keep up. It's so sad to me that this has happened to the comments as i love to hear from readers but I'll have to figure something out after Oscar season.

December 8, 2019 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

A cunt would never apologise imposter. Don’t worry Nathaniel, Suzanne and I are fairly traitless compared to a few other regulars here so we’lol stick out using these names until the new year and rebrand with a fresh slate the next. Can’t bother either of us if we’ve moved on and the crazies are still gnawing at our carcas.

Also finally a critics posts worth posting today. Sorry Mr. Big Shot but you’ve outgrown BFCA so we’ll call you on any disingenuous things you say alamcritics. Imposter syndrome be damned! Xox

December 8, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Yes, Mary Kay Place is big news, but we need Alfre Woodard too. Why to have one or the other? Can't we have both? I hate these awards!

Love your work Manuel.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne (The Real One)

Before we put too much weight on the critics awards, let's not forget last year's unfortunate example of Ethan Hawke. Nobody saw Willem Dafoe coming!

As for Dern, I thought she was great, but Lopez had an actual character arc, and hers was a richer performance for it. I thought Marriage Story's supporting MVP was Liotta.

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterJeremy

@Manuel-New Mexico has good taste!

December 9, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPP

Omg! Jus read an article by Glenn Whipp & Justin Chang, where they talk abt the voting on LAFCA. Little Women actually came in 3rd in Best Pic & Dir, after The Irishman!

Luv tt their choice of Mary Kay Place, I hope its not the last critic prize she rec'v
