Welcome to the Academy, 2019 Newbies!

Today it was announced that AMPAS (The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences) has invited 842 new members to join them, further swelling the Oscar ranks. The Academy has recently entered a period of unprecendented growth as they continue to address gender parity and racial inclusivity within their ranks. For the first time that we recall they actually did achieve gender parity in regards to their new invites - exactly 50% of the new members are women and 29% of the invitees this year are people of color.  Most impressively given the dire previous numbers the directors branch invited more women than men this year! THE DIRECTORS. Think about what a major step that is.

A full* list of new members follows and we threw some hearts up by people for which we went spontaneously aflutter though this is not to imply that the others don't deserve our love. It's a lot of names so it's easy to get overwhelmed...

*We copy and pasted initially from The Hollywood Reporter until we realized that they'd left off a huge swath of the actors -- anyone alphatically after Barry Keoghan so it was probably a typo in their own copy and pasting from Academy sources. But this list is as complete as we could make it) You can also see the list in non-copy/pasteable format at the official Academy page along with more statistics. But we included some photos here for more visual flair.

But isn't it amazing with all the fresh faces and hip talent added yearly we still get winners like GREEN BOOK ?!?!

Does the older portion of the academy simply have to die off?

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

You mean Jamie Bell, Claire Bloom, Giancarlo Giannini and Jean-Louis Trintignant weren't ALREADY members?

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterken s.

Bad news, David...

Green Book still works as the populist middleground white liberal guilty pleasure which can still work overseas (Just check the international numbers: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=intl&id=greenbook.htm)

China really LOVED Green Book.

Equal Bohemian Rhapsody. Reese Witherspoon, Elsie Fisher and other "avant garde" people LOVED that film.

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterleon

Yay more people to deny Glenn when filling out their ballot.

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Is this the Héctor Bonilla from Chaves?

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterPlease come

I don't think the older Academy is the main reason Green Book won. I think a similar section of the Academy voted for both Moonlight and Green Book in an effort to be woke and relevant and hey, we were lucky enough to have a great movie win one of the times.

Trying to imagine a world where more than half of the nominated directors are women...

(Last year should have been, of course)

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterBJT

Very surprised that Giancarlo Giannini wasn't already a member!

Do you think the inviting of both Tom Holland and Tom Hollander was tangentially connected?(" Let's invite Spider-Man, no that's not his name it's HOLLAND. But I guess we should invite the other guy as well.")

As an Australian, I am very happy for Jennifer Kent, and extremely surprised that they were aware of Ivan Sen (one of our greatest indigenous directors, but I wasn't aware that he had an international profile).

Thank you for the link Leon! Ugh that is so depressing

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

How was Claire Bloom NOT invited before? Maybe she passed on the invitation before and is now accepting?

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterTom G.

I'm surprised Claire Bloom, Giancarlo Giannini and Jean-Louis Trintignant were not already members. They've been around forever. One of them was even nominated. They've all starred in Academy-Award nominated films. I'd like to think they were lapsed members and are just being invited back in OR they were invited in the past but turned it down and are now accepting.

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterIrvin

@Please come
When i read your comment i didn't know what the hell are you talking about; i Google it and yes, he is. I completelly ignore that Héctor Bonilla have been appeared in El Chavo del 8. :o

His inclusion as academy member makes me happy as much as his golden Ariel last week. I just hope that his son Sergio Bonilla works more in movies because he is very talented.

Did you know that Sergio and Héctor Bonilla play the latinamerican voices of Remi and his dad (respectively) in Ratatouille?

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCésar Gaytán

Cheers for Ofelia Medina (the best version of Frida Kahlo in a film) and Maryse Sistach, is curious that her film Violet Perfume is not mentioned because is one of the best mexican films EVER and Ximena Ayala in the leading role is one of the best all time performances i've ever seen.

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterCésar Gaytán

This is a list of people who have been invited to join the Academy. They don't automatically become members; they have to accept the invitation and not everyone accepts.

I believe the Academy will sometimes keep inviting people who haven't joined in the past, in case they've changed their mind. That's why there are some names here that surely have come up earlier.

July 1, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterSteve G

JAMIE BELL WAS NOT ALREADY AN AMPAS MEMBER?! WTF, ACADEMY?

Excuse me while I have a conniption...

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

These members all reek of picking the better performance (Colman) over the career Oscar in a competitive category meant to be for just that year’s performance (Close). It needs to be cumulative.

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

David -- what Leon said. It's not about age. It's about mindset. I met plenty of industry people who liked Green Book at awards parties last season. Outside of the industry I heard at least one group of 20somethings on the subway raving about it to a friend who hadn't seen it.

BJT -- i'm confident we'll get a 2 of 5 year within another 10 years :)

July 2, 2019 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I feel unreasonably happy that Andrea Riseborough was invited. Now I can fantasise the she votes for everything I would’ve voted for - including, inevitably, for herself once that first nom comes..... (still hoping!)

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered Commenterchoog

Does anyone know who picks the two movies that are listed for each person? Some of them seem really random to me.

By the way, if anyone (like me) was looking for Chloe Zhao... she was on last year's list.

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterGuestguestguest

Wild that Giannini - more than 40 years since his Best Actor bid - is only now seeing induction.

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew Carden

Did anyone else see Claire Bloom on the this list and wonder how on earth she hasn't already been a member for decades already? I wonder what the story is on this.

@3rtful: you know I love ya and everything but really, I'm sure Glenn Close is okay. Her not winning this year was disappointing to be sure, but not exactly a tragedy.

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterRob

Yousra is a major Egyptian film star and huge in the arab world. I've also seen a couple of names from Nollywood and last year from Bollywood. Happy to see the Academy reaching out to filmmakers from distinctly local industries who have a big imprint on their region but not as big globally.

July 2, 2019 | Registered CommenterMurtada Elfadl

@Rob

She's 71. Were she in midlife like Bening I'd feel securer about the foreseeable.

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Close is actually 72, and Bening is 61, so there's not *that* much of an age difference between them.

It's always strikes me as odd that Oscar nominees (and certainly winners) aren't invited to join the Academy automatically. Why is that?

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

surprised no Nadine Labaki

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterG.ShaQ

I admit Stacey Battat wasn't previously on my radar but she's someone to watch. The Beguiled's costumes were as excellent as they needed to be; The Bling Ring was fun as hell and her eye for Gloria Bell's costumes was exquisite.

What a great collaborator!

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterH

@G.ShaQ - She was invited last year.

July 2, 2019 | Unregistered CommenterIrvin

@BJT
I´m gonna sound like a nerd but i don´t mind.
By mathematics the female directors nominated just can be less than a half (1 or 2 of five) or more than a half (3 or 4 of five) ... but i see your point.
