Best Actress / Supporting Actress - Chart Updates!
BEST ACTRESS and BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS charts are now up. Strangely, this year doesn't feel as competitive as usual when it comes to these two categories. That said, given the lack of a wide field of wildly loved work, we're expecting some unexpected volatility to occur. If one of the early precursors throws a major curveball expect everyone else to follow suit if the field isn't inspiring them.
We are starting to wonder if Lupita Nyong'o is closer to a nomination for Best Actress than we thought she'd be at this point. (She's great in Us but we assumed the genre trappings would hinder her... but is enthusiasm there for other performances the way it was earlier in the year for hers? That's a campaign strength right there if Universal goes for it.)

I do wish Mary Kay Place could finally be nominated. I guess it would takes critics awards for her to even have an outside chance though.
I'm glad Laundromat is a critical dud so that will hopefully shut those Meryl fans once and for all come Oscar time, supporting or lead or whatever. Oh yes, that Latina disaster too:)
Do you think a critical dud has ever stopped Streep before from getting a nomination? Especially in a very weak year in both categories?
She is still getting best in show reviews in Laundromat and that is even with the secondary character (which Soderbergh uses to make one angry, not just used for a gimmick)
Pete, you forget Meryl also has Little Women and Big Little Lies ;)
I don't think Meryl will bother to campaign for The Laundromat, she's not greedy!
Suzanne- I agree. She also has Big Little Lies and Little women.
At least Meryl worked with a better director this time and did something risky.
I doubt anyone in 2009 would have thought that a Phyllida Lloyd movie would be her greatest Oscar sucess this decade. C'est la vie.
I don't think she's going to be nominated for LW, but I've always liked aunt march, so I'm happy she plays her no matter how little the screentime. 8)
Octavia Spencer in LUCE is my favorite supporting performance of the year, plus it's a stretch for her at least as far as awards-nominated roles go. She's not a maid! Or a cleaning lady!
Don’t count out Emilia Clarke in Last Christmas! She might be the secret dark horse for the Best Actress category everyone!
