When are we going to get a best actress and supporting actress ballot out of nick?!

I like Clemency enough for a repeat viewing. Made sure to see it theatrically the week of the Oscar nods before they yanked it from local specialty venues.

I still don't get 100% of english when i hear it (I hope I didn't misunderstand the audio) bur i find very interesting the first part.

I´ve been doing myself lists of movies for years but after watch the mini-series documentary The Story of Film: An Odyssey by Mark Cousins (that in México was beautifully narrated by the actor Julio Bracho) i understood the diference when you like a film just for a personal taste and when you learn to know the technical aspects of cinema that helps you to discover different ways of apreciation.

I don´t think that exists an absolute objectivity when you do a list, i think that at some point you just balance your knowledge about movies and your personal taste based in what you value most about a film.

Even the interest in the movies you watch is different for anyone and can change in yourself. I remember that at first i used to be interested in watched a lot of indie films from the USA, after that i was more interested in foreign films, time after i wanted to watch the 'weirdest' movies that i could find and in the last months i want to watch more mexican films.

What i've been learned anout it is that the approach that everyone has with the cinema is different and the lists looking from the outside helps you to get closer to what are you interested but also a way to feel connected with others.

Cesar -- thanks for your comment. I think you understood a lot about the conversation based on your comments. I think we're all (at least cinephiles) part knowledge of cinema / part personal subjective taste.

Peter -- i dont think he's doing a list this year. He isn't even joining us for the smackdown :(

I love Her Smell and intend to watch it again (it's on my top 10 list) - but I agree with you about its Oscar potential. Best case scenario is that it leads to more roles for Moss, one of our greatest actresses.

I will add that I feel the way about Diane that you do about Clemency and Her Smell - terrific lead performance, terribly depressing movie that was nearly impossible for me to sit through.

I also liked Clemency enough for a repeat viewing, if we want to start that club in the comments section.

The film I felt kinda mixed about but never stopped thinking about was DIANE. I’ve rewatched it twice and so glad I did. Definitely one of my favourites of the year and one I know I’ll watch again long after the 2019 film year is done.

Yay!!!!

a) 2009-2018 Film Bitch Awards (before the the extra categories), number of films that have had 10+ nominations. 6 films. Compare that to the oscars...

b) I do think the abbreviated race hit AMPAS a little harder, honestly. Costume Design went to all best picture nominees for the first time ever. Same thing with Production Design.

c) "REAL STEEL?????"

d) I think critics organizations should basically be forced to be more interesting and AMPAS can do that.

César: What a lovely comment! Thank you.

Team Clemency: Was hard for me to go home just now and skip the last remaining matinée before it leaves Chicago, after a ONE WEEK run. Such a pathetic outcome for a great movie that could have done Wife-style business in August or September.

Peter: I should have something for you soon. The countdown was pretty all-encompassing and these last few weeks!

Arkaan: Xoxo
