Meryl Streep and Renée Zellweger are up for Grammys...
Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at 7:32PM We don't really cover the Grammys here at TFE as it's rather beyond our wheelhouse but to give you a general sense of that awards landscape, Taylor Swift ("Folklore"), and Dua Lipa ("Future Nostalgia") dominated and Beyoncé, too, despite the lack of a new album. Everyone's fav obsession at the moment, BTS, disappointingly scored only one nomination for Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Dynamite". Insane that that wasn't up for Record of the Year.

A Star is Born won this Grammy last year despite high profile competition (The Lion King, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Rocketman, Into the Spider-Verse) but none of these albums feel like sure fire winners. Which do you think it will be?

Because the Oscars and Grammys run on different timetables we often see Oscar nominees showing up the following year at the Grammys. 1917, Joker, and Rise of Skywalker were all nominees for last year's Oscars with Joker winning. The only Oscar nominee they ignored was Randy Newman for Marriage Story because they fond a way to honor Alexandre Desplat's Little Women in a different category.
BEST SONG WRITTEN FOR VISUAL MEDIA

- "No Time To Die" for No Time to Die
- "Stand Up" for Harriet
"Stand Up" and "Into the Unknown" lost the Oscar to "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" by Elton John for Rocketman at the most recent Oscars. The Grammys ignored Rocketman in this category last year even though it received a Compilation Album nomination. The inclusion of "No Time to Die" is interesting since that movie was delayed.
P.S. Cats (2019) can now say that it was a Grammy nominated movie!

The Grammys aren't beholden to Broadway runs in this category as they'll also take concept albums or Off Broadway recordings. But of course Jagged Little Pill is the big player at this year's bizarrely phantom-like Tony Awards.

MISCELLANIA - MOVIE/TV PEOPLE UP FOR VARIOUS GRAMMYS...
- Renée Zellweger is up for Traditional Pop Vocal Album for "Judy". While Renée has won several showbiz prizes the Oscar is the only one of the big 4 she's taken; she has never been Tony or Emmy nominated but now she is a Grammy nominee!
- Meryl Streep is up for Spoken Word album for "Charlotte's Web". This is Meryl's sixth Grammy nomination. She has previously been nominated multiple times in the Children's Recording categories as well as in Compilation Soundtrack (as a principal soloist). She has won 3 Oscars and 3 Emmys but hasn't yet won a Tony (1 nomination) or Grammy (6 noms).
- Tiffany Haddish is up for Comedy Album for "Black Mitzvah". This is her second Grammy nomination. She was previously up for Spoken Word Album for "The Last Black Unicorn"
- Jonathan Groff and Tammy Blanchard are up for Musical Theater Album for "Little Shop of Horrors". Groff is already a Grammy winner in this category as one of the principal soloists of "Hamilton". (Groff and Blanchard have both been nominated twice at the Tony Awards but haven't yet won.)
- Composer Alexandre Desplat is up for Instrumental Composition for the track "Plumfield" from his score to Little Women. He has previously won 2 Oscars (from 11 nominations) and 2 Grammys (from 11 nominations)

I loved Tammy Blanchard on Guiding Light when I was a teenager, she really developed her acting skills on that show. I am so glad she has carved out a successful career for herself. Emmy winner, 2 time Tony nominee and now Grammy nominee!
I guess Grammy voters don't really watch TV. Hehe. Sort of shocked they didn't go for Euphoria given the musical pedigree in the visual media categories. (We knew we had no chance...)
I hope Meryl wins. Then there will be pressure on her to return to Broadway so she can be EGOTed.
Tom -- yeah, that's a weird miss now that you mention it. Especially with the Zendaya mania.
Dan -- i've often wondered why she didn't do that. That MOTHER COURAGE run suggested that she would easily win a Tony if she would do something that was eligible for a few months.

Looking at the list for Album of the Year I realised i'm so out of touch with modern music,I couldn't name 1 song on any album by any of those people bar Physical by Dua Lipa.
Hildur Guðnadóttir has another nomination for Joker in the Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Capella category, particularly for the "Bathroom Dance" track.
So upsetting that Fiona Apple's Fetch the Bolt Cutters didn't make the cut in Album of the Year despite being the most critically acclaimed, well, album of the year. Also Lady Gaga's Chromatica
Beautiful Ghosts is a beautiful song.
Good on them for recognizing Richter and AD ASTRA, who should have absolutely been nominated at the Oscars.

Still not over what they did to NIN & Queens of the Stone Age at the end of the 2014 ceremony w/ Dave Grohl & Lindsey Buckingham. Cut to a commercial during their performance. That was the last time I ever watched that fucking awards show.
The Grammys gonna Grammy as usual. Each year they get worst. But I screamed and laughed with Renée Zellweger's nomination. What a waste.

The list this year is a real embarassment. Also the Weeknd's snub is egregious.
If you search Meryl Streep on Grammy.com, she is listed as having 6 nominations. She a double nominee in 1988 for Best Recording for Children.
Fetch, thanks for reminding me that Tammy Blanchard should have played Judy and would have been a very worthy Oscar AND Grammy winner for it.
bimboy -- i saw that but i could not ascertain why it was listed twice. It's the same exact category and same exact recording so how can it be two? Perhaps a glitch in their database.
Meryl Streep is listed twice in 1988 but for 2 different recordings in the same category - "The Tailor of Gloucester" and "The Tale of Peter Rabbit"
Fiona Apple’s album definitely should have gotten an Album of the Year nod—it’s easily the best thing I’ve heard this year. Weeknd was robbed in several categories - “Blinding Lights” is the biggest song of the year and is also actually a great song. FKA Twigs’ Madeline also deserved some love.
I’m surprised that Lady Gaga didn’t get more nods given that she’s a Grammy darling - but in all honesty I thought her album was subpar, so I’m not bothered by it.
Taylor Swift’s nods are well deserved. Folklore totally sold me on her—it’s an excellent piece of work.
Prediction: Taylor Swift will become the first woman to win Album of the Year three times. And it will be well-deserved. folklore is a brilliant and unique achievement.
I am so happy for Dua Lipa. What a fresh talent and such a fun performer who respects the past traditions of pop music.
Very upset about The Weeknd's snub. Blinding Lights is a remarkable record and instant classic.

Add me to the legions who became a "Swiftie" this year thanks to folklore. Fiona Apple is my favorite living artist, and she absolutely should have been nominated for Album of the Year, but Folklore is my personal favorite album of the year.
Did you all see that Ronan Farrow tweeted that he looked forward to losing to Meryl? I listened to Ronan's book on audio borrowed from the library and enjoyed it so much I purchased the book - the first time I've ever done that. But I know Meryl is also an excellent audiobook reader (she does a great job narrating Heartburn).
