Daniel Gives Thanks, 2020
Somehow it’s November! Any retrospective look back at 2020 is surreal, particularly given that this feels like the 9th month of March and we're speeding into another lockdown here in New York City. But I suppose the year really is almost over! So here are some of the movie and TV-related things I’m thankful for this year.
-
The opera-obsessed hotel clerk in The Whistlers
-
Taco Chronicles on Netflix, which is addictive and charming, and which has turned me into a Lady Tacos de Canasta superfan
-
This couch in Shirley:
-
Some of the best new-to-me films of 2020 showing up on streaming platforms, like Youssef Chahine's The Land on Netflix and Marianne und Juliane coming to the Criterion Channel next month - also I saw Party Girl for the first time this year, which was a very big deal for me.
-
The scene in Wild Goose Lake with the light-up shoes and the line dancing to Rasputin and Dschinghis Khan
-
The fabulous collection of opera livestreams on Operavision and the opera-cinema for your couch coming from creative companies like Houston Grand Opera and Opera Philadelphia
-
The little town museum in Bacurau
- Tracking down old ‘60s cartoons on YouTube, like Havoc in Heaven, Nudnik, Street Musique, and Glass Harmonica - and all of Professor Balthazar on Tubi

Oh fuck, I definitely should have included Wild Goose Lake on mine, and Bacarau.
That scene in WILD GOOSE LAKE was blissful cinematic magic. Thanks for sharing such a lovely list of 2020 memories of film, TV, and theatre. It's nice to remember what's good about this year even if so much bad has happened.
Daniel, thank you for continuing to grace us with your insights on The Furniture - I always look forward to your column, esp. when it's on a movie I've seen, because it always makes me look at the movie in a different way.
