BAFTA Winners

BAFTA came and went with the almost all of the Oscar frontrunners crowned. The only real surprise was Parasite taking Best Original Screenplay rather than a Tarantino victory though that shouldn't be a surprise given the Korean hits ingenious construction and terrific dialogue. After the jump the winners list in some speeches...

BEST FILM “1917”
Cementing its lead for the Oscar though we still hope that the preferential ballot helps Parasite surprise.

BEST DIRECTOR "1917"

LEADING ACTRESS RENÉE ZELLWEGER “Judy"

LEADING ACTOR JOAQUIN PHOENIX “Joker”
Phoenix called the British Academy out on their racism.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS LAURA DERN “Marriage Story”
We've been writing about awards season for 20 years now and it will literally never stop being weird to us that every organization wants the exact same 4 people to give speeches!

SUPPORTING ACTOR BRAD PITT “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”
Margot Robbie accepted the award for Brad, giving at least some variety to awards season -- Brad and Leo were both absent from the BAFTAs.

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM “1917” Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, Callum McDougall, Jayne-Ann Tenggren, Krysty Wilson-Cairns

This used to be a juried award and we really wish they'd go back to that.

OUTSTANDING DEBUT BY A BRITISH WRITER, DIRECTOR OR PRODUCER “BAIT” Mark Jenkin (Writer/Director), Kate Byers, Linn Waite (Producers)

FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE “PARASITE” Bong Joon Ho

DOCUMENTARY “FOR SAMA” Waad al-Kateab, Edward Watts

ANIMATED FILM “KLAUS” Sergio Pablos, Jinko Gotoh

Another victory for Klaus. This Animated Feature race is so crazy with I Lost My Body, Klaus, Toy Story 4, and Missing Link all having a victory here or there to give them hope that they might be called on Oscar night.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY “PARASITE” Han Jin Won, Bong Joon Ho

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY “JOJO RABBIT” Taika Waititi

ORIGINAL SCORE “JOKER” Hildur Guðnadóttir

CASTING “JOKER” Shayna Markowitz
This has got to be the weirdest of all awards to give this particular movie as it's practically a one person show.

CINEMATOGRAPHY “1917” Roger Deakins

EDITING “FORD V FERRARI (LE MANS ’66)” Andrew Buckland, Michael McCusker

PRODUCTION DESIGN “1917” Dennis Gassner, Lee Sandales

COSTUME DESIGN “LITTLE WOMEN” Jacqueline Durran

MAKE UP & HAIR “BOMBSHELL” Vivian Baker, Kazu Hiro, Anne Morgan

SOUND “1917” Scott Millan, Oliver Tarney, Rachael Tate, Mark Taylor, Stuart Wilson

SPECIAL VISUAL EFFECTS “1917” Greg Butler, Guillaume Rocheron, Dominic Tuohy

BRITISH SHORT ANIMATION “GRANDDAD WAS A ROMANTIC” Maryam Mohajer

BRITISH SHORT FILM “LEARNING TO SKATEBOARD IN A WARZONE (IF YOU’RE A GIRL)” Carol Dysinger, Elena Andreicheva

It's also up for the Oscar in the Documentary Shorts category... of the two short film categories at BAFTA it was the only one that also scored an Oscar nomination.

EE RISING STAR AWARD Micheal Ward

OUTSTANDING BRITISH CONTRIBUTION TO CINEMA Andy Serkis

And here is Rebel Wilson cracking up the attendees...

Certain that the 4 acting awards will be won by the same 4 people, I've lost interest in this year's Oscar. Boring.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJans

This year has generally been a celebration of mediocrity and averageness, but at least it's not a celebration of the heinous like last year.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterwhunk

Triumphs for PARASITE outside Screenplay and International are the only hopes for this not being one of the all-time most boring Oscars ever.

Great film year though, even if it’s not reflected well enough in the nominees.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRoger

I'm confused on how people find Rebel Wilson funny.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMax

At least Animated Feature is a bit unpredictable at the Oscars this year (for once!) though TOY STORY 4 probably has the edge since it's a multiple nominee (with an additional Song nomination).

And with Netflix not releasing numbers, it's hard to know if more Academy members have seen TS4 or KLAUS. You'd assume TS4, but maybe they all watched KLAUS over the holidays?!

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterSteve G

Even though I wasn't hugely enamored with the consensus films as the season went on, at least I thought it could be interesting. Picture is the only category of the big 6 that isn't 100% sewn up, only 90%. Boring.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

I can't stand Rebel lately and now she's an Oscar presenter...

Love Scar-Jo's general attitude this season. She knows she's at her prime but she also knows it's not her year.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Not a fun season. Film Bitch Awards, please save us from the endless waves of monotony and lack of creative choices this awards season.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterThankful4u

After the Golden Globes, who cares? Even Brad and Leo could not be bothered. Renee winning is zzzz. And I find Joaquin really annoying -- who is he to white man lecture anyone?

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJono

If Joaquin feels so guilty about his various nominations why not pull a Brando and hand it to some deserving black actor?

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

Scarlett's moment will come and when she wins. She'll go Scar-Jo 3:16 on everyone and drink a little bit of the bubbly to celebrate.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered Commenterthevoid99

Wow. I thought Wilson was quite funny and Phoenix inspiring, but then my love/hate relationship with celebrities might need some calibration toward the hate side. I'll check that out and update everyone next week.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterDaniella Isaacs

I see totally pointless that exists many film organizations if they're gonna named not just the same winners but also the nominees.

I agree with Steve G that at least the animated category have been diferent winners but again, just the same titles nominated. I think they are lazy and don't investigate enough, the fact that in the past a gem like Mary and Max was totally ignored for every "major" award Is unbelievable.

I'm join to the chorus who says: BORING

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCésar Gaytán

You all who say : boring, boring and boring ....people who last year even until today still hold the grudge oscar surprise for Glenn Close's snub !!!.....when oscar give you surprise you all angry and grumpy, and when oscar so consistent follow other award give actors who really deserved this year you all said boring !!!!!!.....Renee Zellweger for the wins !!!!!....and its not boring !!!!!!!

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterArturo

@Arturo
Most of the "surprising" winners are not exactly shocking considering the precursor awards (Colman, Cotillard, Swinton, etc.) An authentic surprise would It be a Marcia Gay Harden moment but that almost doesn't happen so, yes the "major" awards are boring.

Can someone please explain to me what it means Scar-Jo 3:16? I know ScarJo Is Scarlett Johansson but i don't receive the memo with the information of the numerology.

February 3, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterCésar Gaytán

Arturo: That's Oscar-watching for you. Everyone wants it to be surprising, but everyone also wants to be right, so you can't win. I'm actually looking forward to seeing Joaquin Phoenix, Brad Pitt and Laura Dern win their Oscars, even if I know it's coming, it just feels more special when it's an Oscar.

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterRichter Scale

So fetch thevoid99!!! Cesar if you’ve seen Mean Girls you’ll understand what thevoid99 is going for with the S**r-J* 3:16 thing. (Sorry it’s too cringey to type) Someone needs to give him a Regina George-ing, STAT!

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterOf

Who is Scarjo's date at the Bafta???

He's HAWT!!

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

I used to obsessively watch all of the awards shows; now I just watch the Oscars and the Globes.

What's the point when BAFTA, Critics Choice, SAG, etc. basically award the same people over, and over and over again?

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterAndy

I have never loved an actress and yet been so upset about their oscar win as I have Laura Derns.

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterKeegan

Baftas used to be interesting when they came after the Oscars now they are just stepping in line with everyone.Less said about the wins the better.

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordonuk

Cesar - I believe that's a reference to Austin 3:16. Professional wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin's popular catchphrase. A combination of his last name and John 3:16 a very popular Bible verse. John 3:16 is about God sending his son for the world's salvation. Austin 3:16 of course says "I just whooped your ass"

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterWhite Trash Guru

What White Trash Gurus said, with an added " Stop trying to make it happen"!

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterReggie G.

Brad, Laura and Joaquin all deserve their long road to coronation. The have put in the work, they are excellent, they are iconic. Renee seems off and undeserved especially given that she has an Oscar already for.... Cold Mountain …. I am really hoping for a Scarjo surprise. She is deserving this year and in general.

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterTony T

I’m absolutely with Tony T - But I really wonder if all these film awards before the big one water down the true excitement of Oscar ... it definitely feels like it this year - it’s a bit like politics at the moment you argue like hell and with all the right reasons and they still all go for what everyone’s telling to do... strange

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterMartin

Tony T- I actually think Scarlett could surprise. She is a double nominee and is part of the biggest moneymaker of the year, and her trailer for the new Black Widow movie is out there for all to see.

February 4, 2020 | Unregistered CommenterTom G.

The way I see it, the Oscars will basically replicate The BAFTAS, with just a handful of changes:

Academy Awards 2020 Predictions:

Best Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt
Best Supporting Actress: Laura Dern
Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix
Best Actress: Rene Zellweger

Makeup & Hairstyling: Bombshell
Costume Design: Little Women
Production Design: Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood
Visual Effects: 1917
Film Editing: Parasite
Cinematography: 1917 - Roger Deakons
Sound Mixing: 1917
Sound Editing: 1917

Documentary Feature: American Factory
Documentary Short Subject: Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're a Girl)
Animated Feature Film: Missing Link
Live Action Short Film: The Neighbours' Window
Animated Short Film: Hair Love

International Foreign Film: Parasite
Adapted Screenplay: Jojo Rabbit
Original Screenplay: Parasite

Original Song: Rocketman - I'm Gonna Love Me Again (Elton John & Bernie Taper))
Original Score: Joker

Director: Sam Mendes
Best Picture: Parasite

BAFTA & OSCAR haven't matched on Best Picture for six years now. So, I believe that this trend will continue.

That's all!
