Onward, First Cow, to the Weekend Box Office.
What did you see this weekend? Pixar's Onward was the big winner with a $40 million haul. The hot ticket in platform release was Kelly Reichardt's First Cow which had the weekend's highest per screen average at just 4 theaters.

I finally made it to Emma. which expanded to very solid numbers in wide release, proving that Jane Austen is still super popular as books-to-movies go. My theater at least was packed on a Saturday night.
Wendy had a rough second weekend dropping to an under $700 per screen average as it expanded to 69 theaters. Between this result and Pan flopping a few years back, perhaps producers should stop funding takes on Peter Pan. There are other stories in the public domain!
In off-chart news The Burnt Orange Heresy, The Booksellers, and Brazil's Bacurau also opened at just a few theaters and Parasite lost half of its screens. It's getting very close to defeating Hero in the all-time foreign film list but it might not make it now with fewer screens each week.

Anyone see The Way Back? I thought Ben Affleck was superb. I wonder why they dumped it in March?
Just your daily (sporadic) reminder that Renรฉe Zellweger is a two-time Academy Award winning Actress.
Saw ONWARD (less Pixar, but I still cried) and EMMA. (so much fun and swoony).
Also caught 21 BRIDGES on DVD and... ugh, no.
A first-timer in Johnny English Strikes Again (hilarious) and a re-watch of Happy Death Day.
Watched STRAIGHT UP which I loved, and then I LOVE YOU BOTH on Hulu which was good.
Excited to see Kelly Reichardt's latest. I heard very positive things about it. Not sure if Old Joy can be bettered but in the Reichardt pluriverse, it is a bit churlish to compare her films for their subjective aesthetic sublimity when each one works within their diegetic lifeworlds. Happy to see Portrait of a Lady on Fire on top of the specialty film box office. Fugere non possum!
I'm a bit wary to go to the cinemas recently because of my fear for contagion given what has become of Covid-19, but thank goodness for online streaming and film subscriptions!
This is also a very good post which I really enjoy reading
Did A SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE: FARMAGEDDON (fun), a locally made documentary about rock camps for girls and gender fluid children NO TIME FOR QUIET, and DARK WATERS finally came to Australian cinemas this week (liked ti).
I've never gotten the appeal of Kelly Reichardt movies. I've tried. Wendy and Lucy. Meek's Cutoff. Certain Women. Night Moves. I want to support her and her films. But they are all so incredibly slow that I lose all interest and get irritated about halfway through. Am I alone in this Reichardt-adverse universe?
Max Von Sydow has died.
Yes ken s, as I said before a computer glitch, R.I.P to a true legend of cinema.
The motherfucker is back.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire - This was very good; it probably had the best cinematography of any film released in 2019. But I was slightly spoiled by seeing stills of all of the best shots for months. Neon really should have released this last fall.
The Invisible Man - Fun, not too scary horror film with another great performance from Elisabeth Moss.
Hillary on Hulu - I've only seen the first two hours, but they are really compelling. I'm not sure there's been a more significant American politician in my lifetime; it's amazing that we've been talking about her for almost 30 years.
I loved First Cow, but the Asian character felt stereotypical.
I saw Onward and First Cow, and wasn't blown away by either. Pixar has done much better. Kelly Reichardt movies are slow, but they never feel like a slog. First Cow felt like a slog. I think I fell asleep for about 20 minutes in the first half.
