August. It's a Wrap

The "Summer Movie Season Without...er... Movies" is officially over. Now we move on to Prestige Film Season... hopefully With Movies but you never know. The dog days of summer are over but here were a baker's dozen or so key posts from the month at TFE in case you missed any of them.

Some Highlights
• French Exit Nathaniel suggests reading the book before the movie!
When Tilda Swinton Went Mainstream - Sean dons the furcoat and angel wings
The Australian New Wave - Glenn takes Criterion's journey down under
The New Classics: Moonlight -Michael goes to the diner with Black & Kevin
A Patch of Blue - Nathaniel gasps at Shelley Winters (second) Oscar
The Furniture: The Poseidon Adventure - Daniel boards the (sinking) ship
Scott Pilgrim vs The World - Nick for the 10th anniversary
Revisiting Spotlight - Juan Carlos asks how the Best Picture has aged

Most Discussed
Smackdown of 2005 - A banner lineup gets raves from our panel
"Won & Done" - Baby Clyde on the curse of finally winning an Oscar
Diaz in Malkovich - Cláudio takes a frizzy-haired request
Emmy Lead Actress Drama - Abe considers this tough all-star race
Yes No Maybe So: Ammonite - We're all in for this lesbian romantic drama

Coming in September
Mulan, Tenet, and other new movies. Plus a deep dive into 1938 cinema for the Smackdown and well beyond. Definitely more Emmy talk, too, and the (virtual) ceremony. We'll hit Mickey Rooney's centennial and celebrate anniversaries of To Wong Foo, Se7en, and Mildred Pierce. And yes, updates to the Oscar charts even though the year still feels like end days.

We'll be holding you to the promise of updating the Oscar predictions. It won't be the same prestige season without it (for what prestige season is worth this year).

Are people going to the movies these days? They opened in my city recently but I’m still having mixed feelings about going. I’m curious what everyone’s opinion are on going now.

NJ -- i haven't been back yet but am considering it. Of course i have the antibodies so i am not quite as nervous as most people are. But i was going to wait until something comes along that I really can't miss. I'd prefer to start by going to the drive-in (safe!) but i dont have a car, so alas...

Go, where a mask, enjoy. There aren't jet streams in a theater carrying people's sneezes from yards away into your nostrils. You'll be fine.

My cinema's re-opened this past week and I have been unsure about going back just because my country is still suggesting not to journey far unless it's necessary which I'm trying to uphold. Next week I return to my studies and would be closer to the cinema so I'd maybe think about it then. Also Tenent and New Mutants don't inspire my enthusiasm to return

I'll go to a theater sooner or later but not until something comes along that I really really want to see on the big screen.. So far not too much chance of that happening. Like many others, I've really gotten into watching old movies at home, along with streaming-only new stuff like Da 5 Bloods (RIP Chadwick Boseman).

Imagine getting Covid for a Christopher Nolan movie! LOL!

I just read "Won & Done". A great read, but - Laurence Olivier was nominated for The Boys from Brazil? Didn't he overact horribly, even by Laurence Olivier standards? I'm chocked.
And I wish Peter O'Toole had won for Lawrence of Arabia. Sigh.
