John Waters Designs NYFF Poster

by Nathaniel R

With TIFF disinviting 2/3rds of their regular press attendees (including yours truly 🤬 ) and a much smaller roster of film, and with Telluride cancelled altogether, NYFF is staking its claim to be the coolest North American film festival.

We've already seen their solidly interesting lineup and NYFF doubled down on their coolest film festival intention today by releasing their official poster designed by that icon of trash cinema, John Waters.

See the full brilliant poster and John Waters quote about it after the jump...

“Since none of my films were ever chosen to be in the New York Film Festival, I was thrilled to be asked to design this year’s poster. I always knew I’d get my ass in there somehow! What better way to show my respect and irreverence for this prestigious event than to bring along Globe Poster, Baltimore’s famous press that promoted the best rock-and-roll shows all over America for decades? Trashy? Classic? Maybe it’s all the same in 2020 when we have to reinvent moviegoing itself.”

We're still giggling about the "Wait in line with intellectuals" blurb. Haha. You can actually order this poster here

I love it! And it's funnier for me because the call outs ("We've got women too!" etc.) somehow has Billy Eichner's voice in my head.

So frustrating about TIFF and can't believe you didn't get it. Do you think the same thing will happen with NYFF since they wrote about limited space in their press accreditation application too?

One last movie, please. Call Kathleen.

Call me a noodge, but I'm kind of hung up on the fact that Varda is, well, dead. Though she was, of course, THE signifier of "we've got women, too" in film history for decades.

I was wondering if you were going to be TIFFing virtually. That's too bad you're not. I got virtual tickets today for Nomadland and Summer of 85. Ammonite was virtually sold out. New York looks amazing though. Great they have I Carry You With Me and Gundha.
