Showbiz History: Multiple cult classics and volatile awards seasons

5 random things that happened on this day, January 19th, in showbiz history

1962 Tender is the Night opens in movie theaters. The film stars Jennifer Jones.

1964 Joan Crawford stars in Strait-Jacket, new in theaters which is now a total cult classic. Here's one of my favourite posts I ever wrote

1990 Another cult classic, Tremors, debuts on this day...

1991 48th annual Golden Globes are held with Dances with Wolves and Green Card leading for film with the only major difference in the six top categories from Globes to Oscar night was that Bruce Davison took the Best Supporting Actor prize for Longtime Companion. Twin Peaks  and Cheers took the TV prizes.

1997 54th annual Golden Globes are held with The English Patient and Evita winning the film prizes. This was one of those rare and beautiful years where you didn't have to hear the same speeches at each awards ceremony. Only ONE of the four acting winners come Oscar night had won at the Globes (Geoffrey Rush for Shine). As we've often lamented out loud (usually to complaints that we shouldn't want variety in awardage as if Best is not subjective) there is really no point in multiple awards show or awards group if all voting bodies have the same taste!

2001 Yet another future cult classic Donnie Darko premieres at the Sundance Film Festival (pictured above) directed by 25 year old newcomer Richard Kelly and starring Jake Gyllenhaal (just 20 years old at the time).

2003 60th annual Golden Globes are held with female fronted-films winning both prizes with The Hours taking Drama and Chicago taking Best Musical or Comedy.

Today's Birthday Suit
Happy 29th birthday to Logan Lerman. Remember that cute Rocky Horror Picture Show scene in Perks of Being a Wallflower? Lerman was so sweet when we met him for our Perks interview back in the day.

Other Birthdays Today: The legend herself Dolly Parton, Tippi Hedren (The Birds, Marnie), Director Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Whiplash), Spain's Javier Camara (Talk to Her, I'm So Excited), Mickey Sumner (Frances Ha, Battle of the Sexes), Paul McCrane (ER, Fame), Rob Delaney (Bombshell, Deadpool 2), Alex Sparrow (UnREAL, Space Force), Katey Sagal (Married with Children, Futurama), Drea de Matteo (Sopranos), Luke Macfarlane (Brothers & Sisters, Mercy Street), John Richardson (One Million Years BC, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever), Jean Stapleton (All in the Family), Shawn Wayans (White Chicks, Little Man), Director Larry Clark (Bully, Kids), Director Richard Lester (Help), Broadway's Veanne Cox (Erin Brockovich, You've Got Mail), and Lisa Lu (Crazy Rich Asians, The Joy Luck Club).

"usually to complaints that we shouldn't want diversity in awardage as if Best is not subjective"

Who said dat?

Really bish -- that was worded poorly. I meant "variety" not "diversity"... diversity in modern vernacular almost solely is used to suggest social sexual or ethnographic diversity and not diversity in the old way of just meaning variety (which is what i meant) so i changed the wording.

Nicole giving the Globe to Madonna for Evita. Guess you died that day and I've been dating a ghost since then.

Love Madonna's win here. Wish it would have translated to Oscar but 1996 was one of the most competitive years this category has ever seen. Blethyn, Keaton, McDormand, Thomas, and Watson all would have made worthy award winners.

Logan Lerman isn't 30 yet?! Feels like he's been around a long time. Big fan - but the films he's been in since Fury, well, I wish they were better (haven't seen Shirley).

He's barely in Shirley but pretty good in the limited time he has. Agree -- he's an underused talent.

Bruce Davison's bedside goodbye to his long term partner is one of the most devastating scenes I have witnessed on film,I must admit as a 14 yrs old gay lad I was worried by this film,Stayed safe ever since.

Madonna showing up to sing after being snubbed was so cool of her.

Strait-Jacket is such a ridiculous premise but thanks to Joan Crawford it's delicious fun. As much of a low-budget enterprise as it is it still is a bit of a high point of this phase of Joan's career. There were much worse films that followed it.

I love "Tremors" so much...

I love the fact that the divine trio of Dolly Parton, Cher and Dame Helen Mirren were born within 12 months of each other. Three such talented ladies who have taken great strides for the female cause

Richard Kelly... only made one good movie and then his follow-up is one of the worst films ever made and then he made one more film that no one cared about.

Lerman is superb in the highly underrated INDIGNATION (2016).
