Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana
That's the first shot of Kristen Stewart as Diana in Pablo Larraín's next film Spencer, one of our presumed Oscar hopefuls for 2021 though the release plans aren't at all firm yet. Let's hope it goes better for Kristen than it did for Naomi Watts! (Not that it won't by default, but still). So we might be looking at our first Best Actress nominee of the new film ye -- No, we can't get into that yet; we're still in this season.
There's no word yet on who is playing Prince Charles but the film takes place over a single weekend (the best kind of biopic!) and we trust Larraín to make this totally interesting since his films (Jackie, No, Neruda) always are, even the ones that are totally filled with hard-to-watch hatefulness (Tony Manero, Ema, The Club). Larraín's films are always exquisitely put together and this one will be no exception with the cinematographer of Portrait of a Lady on Fire (Claire Mathon), two time Oscar winner Jacqueline Durran (Anna Karenina, Little Women) on costumes, and Oscar nominee Jonny Greenwood (Phantom Thread) on score duties.

Seems like a good job - all I can see is Emma Corrin.
I’m totally on board for a future Kristen Stewart Oscar win. She’s been challenging herself for years now and I’m loving that she’s been an auteur darling as of late.
I remember doubting that Gary Oldman's performance in Darkest Hour would take off because John Lithgow was so good in The Crown. I'm just saying.
that TEAM though
I think it's uncanny. I'm in the minority that feels like Emma Corrin wasn't able to evoke who Diana was beyond the accent and some mannerisms, but I have every faith that Kristen Stewart can dig a little deeper.
I'm seeing Naomi Watts! lol I think that's probably the camera and face angle. Variety reports that they are aiming for a Fall release, I guess that means Venice since Ema & Jackie premiered there.
I like Kristen but am skeptical she can bring an Icon like Princess Diana to life.
Somewhat skeptical about Kristen too, but if anyone can make her shine it's this team.
Very promising project, indeed.
Not into Kristen, totally into Diana.
That's a very convincing image
Kristen Stewart looks like Diana but.... I think Emma Corrin pulled that character off way better than anyone expected as there is no way anyone is going to to Corrin. Plus, how can you not love someone who danced to Billy Joel and roller skating to Duran Duran inside a palace?
Did Princess Diana bite her lip and sigh and shrug a lot? I can’t remember.
All I see is Naomi Watts.
You had me at Johnny Greenwood.
Stop casting lesbians to play straight roles!!
Sally Hawkins has joined the cast! Hooray
Crossing my fingers for this movie. Kristen looked uncanny!
@ Owen
Yes, as a matter of fact!
Kudos to the hair and makeup team as she looks very much like Diana.
My worry is that Kristen is such a specific actress, who definitely has talent but essentially always plays a version of herself. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing (she was sensational in Clouds of Sils Maria), but it could be quite jarring when she plays one of the world's most famous women who ever lived. There's a threshold of believability you have to get past (voice, walk, mannerisms, etc.) that I'm not entirely sure she can manage. However, the talents involved are quite impressive, so I'll try to reserve judgment until I've seen it.
