'Promising News in Miami'

by Nathaniel R

Good news for those still stuck at home, which is most of us. Both the provocative Carey Mulligan vehicle Promising Young Woman and the thoughtful Tom Hanks western News of the World are arriving On Demand starting Friday, January 15th (a week from tomorrow!). Coincidentally that's also Regina King's birthday and the day her directorial debut, One Night in Miami, begins streaming on Amazon Prime. It's like Regina is giving us a gift for her birthday. Generous!

So circle that date on your calendar. You'll be able to have a delicious Best Picture hopeful triple feature weekend. Your mileage will of course vary on whether each of these three are worthy of a "Best" stamp but at the very least they're all interesting and handsomely made movies and as a triple feature they offer a ton of variety in tone and theme and acting styles.

Which are you most eager to see?

One Night in Miami was good and News of the World was solid once it got going. Can't wait for Promising Young Woman.

I've already seen Promising Young Woman. Enjoyed it more than you did. Outside of King's movie I have no interest in the Hanks vehicle -- it just seems dull on paper and through the available clips.

Web screeners for "Promising Young Woman" leaked last week, so it's a clever move to release it as soon as possible since we won't have the chance to see it in cinemas anytime soon. The also leaked "Nomadland" and "Minari" should also follow.

Everyone needs to see One Night in Miami.

In the initial minutes, football icon Jim Brown visits a wealthy white man. Mr. Carlton, (an outstanding Beau Bridges) at his home, a lovely Southern estate with a long driveway draped with Spanish moss. The writing, the underplayed delivery and the surprise end of the sequence remind us of the ever present role of race.

Director Regina King shoots the sequence so beautifully, Her camera sits snug and close in the conversation between the two men, so that an initial awkwardness felt by the viewer is quickly dispensed. King emphasizes truth with a shot from far inside the home of a solitary Brown standing in the door frame. It's an Oscar clip waiting for the ceremony.

Promising Young Woman and One Night in Miami are probably my two most anticipated movies and I'll be so happy to finally see them next week! It's been very hard to avoid spoilers for PYW since so many of my favorite writers have been reacting to it.

Definitely looking forward to Promising Young Woman. I had the good fortune to watch An Education again recently, and really marveled at Carey Mulligan's wonderful acting in that pic. Tom Hanks is somewhat of a dice roll. I tried to watch him in Da Vinci Code but the pic was a snooze a thon. Regina King has always been very talented; looking forward to seeing what she offers.

I'm in Sydney and cinemas are open (with mandatory masks). Promising Young Woman opened yesterday, News of the World opens 14 January in cinemas (Netflix on 6 February) and I got a Prime Video 30-day trial so I can see One Night in Miami... next weekend (plus catch up on Sound of Metal, Palm Springs, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, I'm Your Woman and Time). Can't wait!
