European Film Award nominations for 2021
by Nathaniel R
There's no true leader at the European Film Awards this year with three films (Titane, The Father, and Compartment No 6) tied for the most nominations but there is a leader if you look at individual nominations: Italian master Paolo Sorrentino is up for three prizes himself for Italy's Oscar submission The Hand of God (Film, Director, and Screenplay) so consider that a force going into the Oscar finalist selections. The European Film Awards also have juries that decide on craft awards like Cinematography, Production Design, and the like but they don't have traditional nominations so we won't know the winners for a while yet.
The nomination list and commentary after the jump...
EUROPEAN FILM 2021
COMPARTMENT NO. 6, dir: Juho Kuosmanen (Finland)
QUO VADIS, AIDA?, dir: Jasmila Žbanić (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
THE FATHER, dir: Florian Zeller (UK)
THE HAND OF GOD, dir: Paolo Sorrentino (Italy)
TITANE, dir: Julia Ducournau (France)
Two Oscar contenders from last season plus this year's Oscar submissions from Finland, France, and Italy.
EUROPEAN DIRECTOR 2021
Julia Ducornau for TITANE (France)
Radu Jude for BAD LUCK BANGING OR LOONY PORN (Romania)
Paolo Sorrentino for THE HAND OF GOD (Italy)
Jasmila Žbanić for QUO VADIS, AIDA? (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Florian Zeller for THE FATHER (UK)
Radu Jude shows up here despite Bad Luck... not getting a Film nomination, taking the spot one might have expected Finland's Juho Kuosmanen to snag. But we're disappointed that Worst Person in the World and Joachim Trier didn't show up in either of the two big categories.
EUROPEAN COMEDY 2021
NINJABABY, dir: Yngvild Sve Flikke (Norway)
THE MORNING AFTER, dir: Méliane Marcaggi (France)
THE PEOPLE UPSTAIRS, dir: Cesc Gay (Spain)
Interesting to see Ninjababy here. It was up against Worst Person in the World for Norway's Oscar submission. Perhaps they didn't consider Worst Person enough of a comedy for this category?
EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY 2021
BABI YAR. CONTEXT, dir: Sergei Loznitsa (Ukraine)
FLEE, dir: Jonas Poher Rasmussen (Denmark)
MR BACHMANN AND HIS CLASS, dir: Maria Speth (Germany)
TAMING THE GARDEN, dir: Salomé Jashi (Switzerland/Germany/Georgia)
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BOY IN THE WORLD, dirs: Kristina Lindström & Kristian Petri (Sweden)
EUROPEAN ANIMATED FEATURE FILM 2021
EVEN MICE BELONG IN HEAVEN, dirs: Denisa Grimmová & Jan Bubeníček (Czech Republic)
FLEE, dir: Jonas Poher Rasmussen (Denmark)
THE APE STAR, dir: Linda Hambäck (Sweden/Norway/Denmark)
WHERE IS ANNE FRANK, dir: Ari Folman (Israel)
WOLFWALKERS, dirs: Tomm Moore & Ross Stewart (Ireland)
Flee double-dips in Documentary and Animated... which we might see at the Oscars this year, too. No film has yet accomplished that particular double-dip though Waltz with Bashir (2008) tried in its year.
EUROPEAN ACTRESS 2021
Jasna Đuričić in QUO VADIS, AIDA? (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Seidi Haarla in COMPARTMENT NO. 6 (Finland)
Carey Mulligan in PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (UK)
Renate Reinsve in THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD (Norway)
Agathe Rousselle in TITANE (France)
EUROPEAN ACTOR 2021
Yuriy Borisov in COMPARTMENT NO. 6 (Finland)
Anthony Hopkins in THE FATHER (UK)
Vincent Lindon in TITANE (France)
Tahar Rahim in THE MAURITANIAN (France)
Franz Rogowski in GREAT FREEDOM (Austria/Germany)
It's pretty impressive to see two films appear in BOTH lead acting categories: Titane and Compartment No 6 (pictured).
EUROPEAN SCREENWRITER 2021
Radu Jude for BAD LUCK BANGING OR LOONY PORN (Romania)
Paolo Sorrentino for THE HAND OF GOD (Italy)
Joachim Trier & Eskil Vogt for THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD (Norway)
Jasmila Žbanić for QUO VADIS, AIDA? (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Florian Zeller & Christopher Hampton for THE FATHER (UK)
Despite no film or director nomination, Joachim Trier does land here for the excellent Worst Person in the World. Yes we mention this movie a lot but we love it so...
EUROPEAN SHORT FILM 2021
BELLA, (hybrid) Greece
DISPLACED, (documentary) Kosovo
EASTER EGGS, (animated) Belgium/France/Netherlands
IN FLOW OF WORDS, (documentary) Netherlands
MY UNCLE TUDOR, (documentary) Belgium/Portugal/Hungary/Moldova
Will we see any of these in the Oscar finals?
EUROPEAN DISCOVERY AWARDS 2021
BEGINNING (Georgia)
LAMB (Iceland)
PLAYGROUND (Belgium)
PLEASURE (Sweden/Netherlands/France)
PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (UK)
THE WHALER BOY (Russia/Poland/Belgium)
Playground (Belgium) and Lamb (Iceland) are both Oscar submissions this year. While Beginning and Promising Young Woman were Oscar eligible last season. Different release schedules in different countries are to blame.
Previously Announced
YOUNG AUDIENCE AWARD 2021
THE CROSSING (Norway) ★
PINOCCHIO (Italy)
WOLFWALKERS (Ireland)
Both Pinocchio and Wolfwalkers snagged Oscar nominations last season but this is the first we've heard of Norway's Crossing which is the a World War II drama about two Norwegian siblings and two Jewish children their parents have been hiding from the Nazis.

As an actressexual all I can say is Best Actor is for the ages.
unrelated.- There's a new Twitter account that posts Oscar acting clips. At last! I've tagged you in Pfeiffer's 89
Shut the fuck up Fisher Stevens! It's not YOUR moment
Penelope Cruz won Best actress for Volver and Antonio Banderas won Best actor for Pain & Glory.
Does not even getting nominated for Parallel Mothers shorten Penelope's chances for an Oscar nomination?
Was Germany's I'm Your Man ineligible?
Hoping that The Macaluso Sisters was going to appear somewhere. Cross fingers for a surprise thorught the crafties
@BJT-Cruz is sensetional in Parallel Mothers. Who said that she deserved the Volpi Cup for Official Competition (where Banderas and Martinez shine) didn't saw the movie.
@Finbar McBride- On EFA Official site there's the list with all the eligible movies.
@BTJ and Finbar McBride: I checked. Parallel Mother wasn't eligible, I'm your man was.
But I disovered another big surprise: Venice Winner L'ENVENEMENT was eligible
Titane all the fucking way!
