Rank these 8 time winners, 8 days before the Oscar noms

It's 8 days until Oscar nominations are out. How fun is it that exactly 8 movies have won exactly 8 competitive Oscars? For dumb fun rank the films which pulled off that feat, only one of which didn't win Best Picture.

Just coming in to ensure that Slumdog, Gandhi, and My Fair Lady are at the bottom of every list where they belong

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMike in Canada

1. Cabaret (1972) - I will *always* come to the Cabaret!
2. From Here to Eternity (1953) - Still think about this one from time to time
3. Gone with the Wind (1939) - would be #1 for sheer entertainment except you know, huge racism
4. On the Waterfront (1954) - need to see this again
5. Amadeus (1984) - Need to see this again
6. Slumdog Millionaire (2008) - Only middling but man do I love the end credits dance-a-thon
7. Gandhi (1982) - Well-made but Def a one-time affair
8. My Fair Lady (1964) - will never understand the popularity of this torturous film with the torturous Rex Harrison

1. Amadeus (absolute masterpiece, so re-watchable)
2. Cabaret (love it, though I'm torn because I also love The Godfather)
3. On the Waterfront (Brando at his best)
4. Gone with the Wind (took a few viewings to appreciate it)
5. My Fair Lady (while it is too stage-y, the material is too strong for me not to enjoy it)
6. From Here to Eternity (need to see this one again, though I do remember it being good)
7. Slumdog Millionaire (visually stunning, though I've always had issues with the story, particularly the "It is Written" end tag)
8. Gandhi (great central performance and some good moments, including a cameo from Daniel Day-Lewis, but a slog overall)

Just curious, if you had the choice to either give The Godfather’s Best Picture win to Cabaret OR give The Godfather Part II’s win to one of the other nominees that year, which would you choose?

Edwin: The Godfather should keep Best Picture. It's a masterpiece, whereas Cabaret is one rung beneath being a masterpiece. (Its storytelling is a bit baggy.) But I love both.

I also love The Godfather Part II, but I would give its Best Picture Oscar to Chinatown. But again, two great films!

March 7, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterEdward L.

Trivia: SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is one of only two Best Picture winners to contain a word in its title that is not a real word and not a proper noun. The other is BIRDMAN. Both compound words, interestingly enough.

They're all good films, but My Fair Lady is the only one I don't really like. I know objectively that it has many quality elements, but I kind of despise it.

5)Cabaret

7)Slumdog Millionaire
8)Gandhi

The masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia(1962) should have been part of this list - it won seven well-deserved golden statuettes - if AMPAS had not done the injustice of giving Gregory Peck the Best Actor award that year(the award should have gone to Peter O'Toole). I am sure that if the movie was part of this group, It would be in a very high position.
