A virtual Youn Yuh-Jung retrospective

by Nathaniel R

If you're done catching up with the Oscar nominated films, here's a edifying diversion for you. Film at Lincoln Center is doing a mini 5 film Youn Yuh-jung celebration for her Oscar run in Minari. Unfortunately the series only looks at her work as a revered senior citizen actress, but it's still worth noting. Films are $12 to stream (except Minari which is $19.99) or $32 for a bundle of four...

Youn Yuh-jung and the great Jeon do-Yeon in "The Housemaid"

Among the films we can highly recommend the erotic thriller The Housemaid (2010). It was my personal introduction to Youn Yuh-Jung and she's just fabulous in it in a key supporting role -- you can see I almost even nominated her for Supporting Actress that year

We were hoping with their film connections they'd screen something really rare. Would LOVE to see her debut in Woman of Fire (pictured left, 1971) or Be a Wicked Woman (pictured right, 1995) for the title and plot alone. The film is about two women plotting to kill their husbands.

I Highly recommend the Housemaid trilogy by Kim Ki-young:
The Housemaid (1960, remake 2010). Still the best Korean film before Parasite, imo.
Woman of Fire '71.
Woman of Fire '82.

I've been meaning to see "The Housemaid." Might seek it out asap now.

The only movie she's in that's avail on streaming it seems is "The Taste of Money" on Amazon Prime.

Can’t talk about Youn without mentioning that she’s a darling of one of the world’s greatest living auteurs, Hong Sang-soo.

Youn Yuh-jung won an award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards when I worked for them and she was such a delight and a lovely presence. Her speech is lovely, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIq_Oi5LZnE

Really excited for this and grateful that Film at Lincoln Center will continue to offer virtual options. Looking forward to attending the NYFF from home again this year.

I used the link and watched The Housemaid. It is a fine film that explores similar themes to Parasite. Youn Yuh-Jung is a strong actress, but I will be sad if Glenn Close is denied for an eighth time.
