Marvel Cinematic Universe - New tease and theatrical dates

by Nathaniel R

Marvel Studios released a big "back to the movies" video to celebrate the communal experience of movie-going. You get tiny slivers of their past "phases" and sneak peaks of all four films coming in 2021 except the Christmas-time Spider-Man (so we'll assume there isn't yet footage available). The most "exciting" of which for all it's 'what will this be like?' mystery is The Eternals directed by freshly double-Oscared Chloe Zhao from. We get some wide shots but no glimpses of the action except Angelina Jolie raising a sword. It will be good to have her back on the big screen where she belongs! The "tease" and release dates after the jump...

UPDATED SCHEDULE

2021

BLACK WIDOW - July 9th, 2021
SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS - September 3rd, 2021
ETERNALS - November 5th, 2021
SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME - December 17th, 2021

2022
DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS - March 25th, 2022
THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER - May 6th, 2022
BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER - July 8th, 2022
THE MARVELS - November 11th, 2022

2023
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA - February 17th, 2023
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 3 - May 5th, 2023

After those dates there's an obvious "Fantastic Four" symbol behind the Marvel Studios logo and then a black screen with "See You at the Movies" as well as this dread fine print caveat...

Is that referring to their Disney+ television series supplemental material? Or maybe it's a nod that Captain America 4 (with Anthony Mackie headlining as the new Cap) will be straight to Disney+? Or maybe Fantastic Four will be since it's already had three failed attempts at cinematic glory before Marvel got the rights back? Or is this an out clause in general in case the theatrical experience collapses entirely by the summer of 2023?

Time will tell. Though time will also be meaningless as stakes are significantly lowered once the multiverse is introduced.

I didn't catch that "DVD and Digital" disclaimer at the end, but couldn't that just be referencing the other older MCU titles in the montage that have already had their theatrical releases? like everything pre-Black Widow that is already on D+ or DVD.

Jesus Christ. I'm exhausted with the Marvel industrial complex.

Somehow these movies are inescapable -- like, I know that I'll see all of these eventually even though I'm excited for absolutely none of them.

I know plenty of people hate it, but I am totally on board with anything the MCU produces. It's dumb fun, but it's still fun

Marvel isn't going to locate the debut or main offerings of their FIRST FAMILY to TV. They'll want to adapt them in a trilogy as good as it can be (and don't they have stories to adapt, my God, just think of the Byrne run that is still "virgin" on screen and is full of memorable sagas and independent issues, juggling with pure sci-fi ideas and even allowing hmself to taste even horror)... and Doom, Galactus, Annihilus... there you have a trilogy of villains that can shake the whole MCU. After the trilogy, don't discard a The Thing solo Disney+ Series or the Future Foundation...

... and they are not still saying a word about the Mutants, but Weapon X is already in works, it seems...

I'm with Scorsese -- theme park ride spectacles, but I have a problem when it saturates the culture. Surely this can't be the thing to get people excited to go back to the cinemas, but sadly, it will be.

Bill Maher had a great bit: Only in a country where adults watch superhero movies can someone like Donald Trump be elected president. Obviously a joke and an argument that doesn't hold up, but it's still interesting to think about. I'm all for good escapist fun, but I do cringe when people try to claim these movies are more important than they are.

Anyway, that's my rant about MCU. Hate it, don't find much value in it, but sadly they'll keep making these movies as long as people keep paying to see them.

I tuned out about 10 yrs ago when watching the sequal to Thor and the b/f turned to me and said "Are you bothered who wins the battle, life's too good for this shit" at wihich I turned it off and we never watched another Marvel film since,it's such a brain drain to think about watching any more of them.

While most of these probably will only get below the line nominations, it seems like this is the perfect sort of teaser that should have been aired during the Oscars. Yes, most of the audience would have done a mini-eye role, but this commercial did a great job of reminding people to go to the theater.

It's easy to be critical of MCU/Disney, but these films offer viewers strong communal viewing experiences. A lot of films do, but the anticipation/feeling as an audience watches some of these films is really exciting. They're also doing a good job of employing a range of actors and directors. For example, where would Brie Larson be now post-Oscar win? Captain Marvel gave her the chance to show off her movie star wit/quality in a way that few other projects have. And Black Panther 2 finally allowed people to see Lupita's face on screen post-Oscar.

Do they know how self-aware the title "DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS" is?

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterParanoid Android

Goosebumps.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterUnknown

Oh great. I have a colonoscopy scheduled for the day Guardians 3 opens! Dammit, my life sucks. Thanks a lot Marvel!

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterCorey

Sorry for the naysayers, but I'm excited. I recently lamented that I was still chasing that theatrical high of ENDGAME opening weekend with an enthusiastic crowd and seeing Marvel actually FEATURE footage from one of such screenings was delightful (and smart).

And look, I think we can all agree that movie theaters NEED to get back the audience. I can't wait to see NOMADLAND in the big screen, but that's not going to be everyone. This (like all blockbusters) can help.

Also ETERNALS cast has got to be the most attractive cast ever.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

"Avengers assemble" on opening weekend will always be one the of the most amazing theatre going moments of my life.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered Commentermikenewq

I feel a bit torn.. I’m a bit exhausted by superhero movies, Captain Marvel bored me stupid and I couldn’t make it through DC’s Shazam or Aquaman... however I loved comic books so much growing up and often the ‘second tier’ characters that are now getting some screen time were my favourite. The Gathers storyline in Avengers featuring Sersi & Black Knight was one of my favourites as a kid... I loved Monica Rambeau’s Captain Marvel, I loved comic book Black Widow.. I can’t help but be excited, at least I’d only for the inner baby choog. .

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterChoog

Black Widow looks great! And it is always great to watch Jolie in action doing real action stuff. Yooowsa!

Am I the only want waiting for Angelina Jolie to continue her journey with the Salt character? She was amazing! Please another movie with agent Salt

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterManuel

Are we done with the Oscars? I feel like we had no closure.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

To add on to my comment... The Academy actually released their own video today that ends EXACTLY the same as Marvel's sizzle reel with the tagline "See You At The Movies." I'm sure it's just a coincidence especially since it's a well-known saying, but it'd be great if more/all studios and the industry at large follow up with this as a sort of unofficial campaign to get people excited about theaters again.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

So the superhero plague is continuing.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDl

Honestly, I'm hyped for this. Eternals look so fucking good. Maybe this will be the next MCU film nominated for Best Picture. Plus, I'm hoping they get the Fantastic 4 right this time.

The first 2 films were terrible. You had a mediocre director at the helm with a mixed bag of a cast where Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis basically carried those 2 films because they were miles above everyone else in the acting department. Then you had the Josh Trank film version was an example of a filmmaker who was way over his head, inexperienced, and wanted to do all sorts of things that never made any sense.

If I was to do a Fantastic 4 film. I'd get a filmmaker who at least has an idea of what to do with the story and actually know the source material. Yet, the film should be set in the 1960s during the Space Race. Have Dominic Cooper reprise his role as Howard Stark with someone playing his future wife Maria and another person to play a young Hank Pym.

My dream cast for the Fantastic 4 are: John Krasinski-Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic

Evan Rachel Wood-Susan Storm/Invisible Woman

Ross Lynch-Johnny Storm/the Human Torch

Ryan Hurst-Ben Grimm/the Thing

thevoid99:

Considering Disney owns Marvel, and that, personally, its otherwise kind of bizarre that they got Jon Watts for this, I think something weird might be going on with MCU Fantastic Four. What exactly is...unclear...but here's my guess/hope:

MCU Fantastic Four are older versions of The Mystery Shack. Dipper (Mister Fantastic), Mabel (Human Torch), Wendy (Invisible Woman), Soos (The Thing). MCU Doctor Doom is being bargained for with Warner Bros, but, specifically...Cartoon Network. Yes, the Fantastic Four movie I think MIGHT happen is The Mystery Shack vs. Mandy, from Billy and Mandy. Jon Watts settles in, confirmed, as "The Co-Production Guy" and Doctor Doom's best modernization is allowed to officially BE Doctor Doom. Related Post-Credits Tease from Multi-Verse of Madness: We see Wanda, back in the cabin from the end of WandaVision. Knock on the door. Wanda opens it. "Chaos Magic is real, huh? I've read up on the theories. Dipper Pines. Second best Scientist-Sorcerer in the multiverse. We need to get ready."

Don't exactly have an idea HOW much older they should be, or how to cast them, but that's my odd call.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Wow. I've always sat in my perch, feeling gloriously above the mere mortals who delight in all the MCU (I think it's called). But as a gay man over 50 (well over), it occurs to me that the hunks in these movies must KNOW that gay men watch them (the hunks) and get excited. So, maybe I'll go for a theme park ride some day in the future.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterrrrich7

It's really disappointing that "cinephiles" think that the superhero genre is a waste of film.

These are the same people that think Glenn Close could have (should have) won an Oscar for Hillbilly Elegy - a movie so bad that it should have never been written.

Yes, superhero movies make a gross amount of money and take up a huge chunk of the profits.

But these films have an audience and their profits allow studios to take risks on smaller projects.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMJC

For a minute I thought that was Uma Thurman. If only...(Not that I have any objection to Angelina Jolie.)

I'm also a bit exhausted at the endlessness of the Marvel universe (and multi-verse), but I can't deny I enjoy many of the movies. And heck, if they keep theaters open, I think they're worth it. Better the MCU than more Star Wars movies - although I guess we're in for too many more of the latter as well.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterLynn Lee

Lots of snobs here. Most who have probably never watched a Marvel movie. I enjoy Marvel and Scorcese. Yup. You can do both. Crazy!

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan (the 1st)

I honestly can't justify these films. They are cartoons and money-making machines. The ones that I have seen, I could never relay the plot to anyone or what happened at the end or why it mattered. To me, that means they are forgettable and the studios are simply winnowing the film-going audience to "rush experiences" that make a lot of money. And they don't support a broader range of film choices, it's actually the opposite.

May 3, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterTom Ford

people complaining about these movies are as exhausting as the fanboys, like, no one forces them to watch, right? so let them enjoy to those who actually want to

May 4, 2021 | Unregistered Commenterangel

With all due respect Volvagia, you are q good commenter but thank God you're not a director, screenwriter or conceptualiser.

May 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterAnna Oop

Anna Oop: I don't exactly know if they're going to do what I tossed out. But: This is The Fantastic Four. THE starting point for modern Marvel, and one where "straight" adaptations have produced 4, increasingly bad, movies. And, based on that track record, I otherwise don't get WHY Marvel picked Jon Watts for this. Considering the bad history of Fantastic Four movies, you'd think the obvious decision, then, would be chasing for OTT overcompensation. "Second Oscar Winner for Best Director helming an MCU movie" level overcompensation. "One of the Best Guys in Our Stable is Doing It" level overcompensation. For the former? Michael Hazanavicius, Damien Chazelle or Alfonso Cuaron could all do great with that material. For the latter? Taika Waititi, Ryan Coogler or (maybe) Destin Daniel Cretton would all be free by the time this was going to be shooting. But they chose Jon Watts. I don't hate his Spider-Man movies (I even lightly prefer them to Raimi's), but even if they WERE going to give it to a mid-stable guy (and, yes, within the MCU stable, Jon Watts IS "mid-stable"), why not just give it to Peyton Reed, then? That's why my guess is grounded in "is there a skill he has developed that no one else in their stable or any of those high tier outsiders has that they chose him for? OH! Right! He's their co-production guy!" So that led me to...that prediction. Is it insane? You bet! Would I be looking forward to it if that's what they're doing? YES!

May 4, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

That’s how they choose to introduce the eternals?! Baffling. So much excitement over the cast and director and they give us 0 context and three images. I’ll take Angelina with a sword anytime but come on

The need for Marvel fans to justify the existence of these dreadful movies and to actually make them seem like they are underrated or that the people who don't like them are snobbish is utterly enthralling. No, they do not help in investing money for smaller productions, they are eating up the market. No, one cannot just not watch them, they are constantly being advertised and talked about everywhere as if they weren't based on the same formulaic structure. And it is not a matter of Scorsese vs Marvel nor the people that don't watch them like Hillbilly Elegy - it is a matter of taste and of wanting to be challenged when watching a film.

May 5, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterDl

OK, enough... this is really, really disrespectful (quoting)

This is simple... you don't like Superhero films? Just don't consume them. But don't diminish their creativity or impact. WandaVision is one of the most imaginative and creative shows on TV on recent memory. Thor Ragnarok was a perfect blend of drama, comedy, action and poignancy, exploring almost the same themes than - believe it or not - Nomadland, at core (someone losing everything that is dear to him and that believed was essential and finding closure and a new freedom and life - and wisdom - thanks to this disastrous loss). Don't say MCU is superficial or hollow, just acknowledge that you did not bother to even pay attention to it. Because it is the very same attitude that was demeaning to horror or sci-fi even when delivering masterpieces like Psycho, The Thing, Blade Runner, etc.

Just say, it's not your cup of tea, but don't attack those who find it interesting, that's pure snobbism. And I don't think I have to back my comment with my background on history of arts and cinema...but the superhero genre has changed the landscape and influenced beyond the blockbuster area, with such an absolutely amazing film like Nacho Vigalondo's "Colossal" being probably one of the very best - and deepest - explorations on the genre.

May 5, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

... and as a good example with Thor: Ragnarok being way more poignant that it seems at first glance, just consider this... one of the messages of the film's ending SPOILER is that Asgard is not a place, but a people... which comes from a jewish director and it is a subtle message about the state of Israel and the concept of "promised land" END SPOILER.

May 5, 2021 | Unregistered CommenterJesus Alonso

A lot of insecure people here, that feel the need to make comments about movies they "don't care about". But then go on long posts about them...

Maybe just don't watch them?
