The Academy Welcomes 395 New Members

Harry Yoon (Editor), Lee Isaac Chung (Writer/Director) and Christian Oh (Producer) were all invited to the Academy post MINARI

Each year the Academy releases the names of their potential new members. Reports range a bit at how many voting members the Academy actually has. Deadline suggests that if all 395 of the new invitees accept membership, AMPAS will be around 9,750ish members while the LA Times places the number around 10,700. We're not sure where that discrepancy of nearly a 1000 voters comes from but let's just say it's hard to track. We rarely learn who declined membership, for example, and of course people die from year to year since many longtime members are elderly. 

As per usual, even before the Academy's largely successfully diversification and gender parity drive, a good portion of the invitees go out to fresh winners and nominees from the previous season. If they accept Youn Yuh-jung, Maria Bakalova, Steven Yeun, Paul Raci, and H.E.R. (to name a handful of examples) will now be Oscar voters. 46% of the new invitees are women and 39% are from underrepresented groups. One really interesting number is that over half of the new invitees, 53% to be exact, are international invites. Whether that translates to more international titles winning Oscar favor, who knows...

Guadalupe -- That's a fairly ridiculous hope. The only work I ever did on film production was as a still photographer and storyboard artist for some shorts nobody saw. My main lane is film criticism and theater costume design. Thanks for the praise, but there's no need to be so hyperbolic, especially when, if AMPAS ever allows film journalists to enter their ranks, there are so much better options among the TFE team. Maybe someday Nathaniel will be a voter if the Academy decides to open up :)

The Academy is too large and unwieldy. I'd like to see them cut back somehow, while still bringing in new blood. 10,000 members is just too many. Membership should be an honor. First of all, they could eliminate the whole publicist branch. Perhaps limit initial membership to say, 5 years, and renew it based on actual work, with maybe 3 renewals (20 years) giving automatic lifetime membership.

Major, but pleasant, surprise that Wayne Blair has an invite to the director's branch. Don't get me wrong, he's very worthy, I wouldn't have thought he would be that widely known outside of Australia. This is truly a move to make the Academy more international (Blair is a First Nations Australian).

@Brevity. Exactly. And, unless BJT is correct, Jonathan Glazer is another (maybe not 20 years ago, but certainly the year after UNDER THE SKIN they should have rushed to invite him. Indeed, after BIRTH I would have invited him.)

I also love their radical choices, like Lizzie Borden and Nina Menkes and start voting for people like, well, like themselves.

The Academy has undergone some drastic changes, but some categories were and are in need of more reform than others. I remember when the calls for more diversity started getting louder maybe 10 years ago and some critics tried to play the “race shouldn’t matter, it should be about QUALITY and if we change QUALITY will be lost.

Someone leaked the list of current members and their credits and let’s just say “quality” was not what you’d call lots of them. Tons of people that haven’t worked in the business in decades, and many whose accomplishments were at best meager. One was a production assistant from Weekend At Bernie’s. These are Hollywood’s gatekeepers of “quality” film culture?

There are members that are people of accomplishments in their field and there are members whose only significant accomplishment is being a member of the Academy.
