What are you watching this weekend?

What have you been watching? Chez moi we're eagerly awaiting the Yellowjackets finale but other than that it's been a movie cramming 'things i missed' kind of week. I hope to have my top ten up list up Tuesday and then the subsequent film bitch awards begin. Recent screenings have included The Harder They Fall, Lunana A Yak in the Classroom, Test Pattern, The Tender Bar, and Annette. From the chatter online it looks like 5cream (read Glenn's spoiler-free review) and The Tragedy of Macbeth (read my NYFF review ) are the most common viewing choices this weekend. Is that true for you or you seeking out vintage titles? Do tell in the comments.

gave a 2nd chance to Wonder Woman 1984... and it is even worse than I remember. It looks great at many times (watched it in 4K) and it's a complete trainwreck... still, that makes it a cult movie in the making, a master lesson of bad choices in film, including how to direct Pedro Pascal to the cringeist performance of its year - not his fault...
Bingeing THE GREAT S2 finally. Fanning and Hoult are still fantastic, but S2's story isn't holding my attention as much as S1.
Also saw I'M YOUR MAN which is now on Hulu. Dan Stevens was swoon.

West Side Story: I like you better as a friend
Tragedy of Macbeth: That beguiling stranger in the corner at a party that you want to talk to but know it's not going to go well but at least it will be fascinating

Licorice Pizza: a lot to admire, but the characters (aside from the cameos) didn't grab me

The Chair: I was not ready for Episode 5 (and glad I didn't see the Killing Eve promo photo of Oh until after the binge)

Mentioned on social media that I was about to start watching ETERNALS, watched it, liked it, got back online and was quite taken aback at the vitriolic comments about the film from friends ("worst than any movie I saw last year", "almost no redemable qualities" and the like). Of course I am always open to differing opinions, but this was just shocking. ETERNALS for me was one of the best MCU movies, maybe only second behind INFINITY WAR.
Also saw THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH (exactly what I expected (good), and Denzel should be winning a third Oscar this year (although I haven't seen KING RICHARD yet)) and THE FRENCH DISPATCH OF THE LIBERTY, KANSAS EVENING SUN (exactly what I expected, and enjoyed it immensely).

I am haunted by the physical image of Kali Reis in Catch the Fair One. The professional fighter is sinewy. Her dark skinned musculature is covered in detailed tattoos while her corn rows frame a face with piercings in center of her cheeks. Her fierce physicality plays against the vulnerability evoked by her petite frame.
This robust thriller explores the world of sex trafficking of young women of color. Throbbing with rage, Kaylee feigns her way into this vile nest in search of her adolescent sister whose photo advertises her for sale on the dark web. Once there Kaylee demonstrates a violence that matches the inhumanity of the white men who lead the clandestine operation.
Action occurs unexpectedly. I found my adrenaline pumping as Kaylee bloodily battles her way to a confrontation with the ring’s mastermind (Kevin Dunn from Veep). At 85 minutes, this compelling narrative may make a star of Reis who not only acts but co-wrote the script.
I watched Mass riveting cinema bar those sitcom opening 10 mins,why is Martha Plimpton not winning everything with respect to the other 3 in the film who are all fantastic.
I try to balance catching up on new releases with my never ending quest to see all the older films on my ever expanding watchlist (though this balance is usually not achieved since I tend to lean much more heavily towards older films).
Yesterday I finally saw Antonioni’s The Passenger and also got around to seeing Titane. An unintentional themed double feature of main characters who assume someone else’s identity. I liked Titane well enough but wasn’t blown away like I was hoping to be (and Cronenberg is one of my favorite directors, so my muted praise is certainly not out of any aversion to body horror; I think Ducournau’s particular style of body horror strikes me as being a tad too nihilistic for my taste). The Passenger was absolutely stunning (especially THAT shot), and as with every other Antonioni film I’ve seen, I have a feeling it will take me a little while to fully process it.
We watched The Eyes of Tammy Faye last night. Yes, Jessica Chastain is great, but I struggle to understand why that movie exists. Ah well. I also watched a strange and delightful documentary called Bathtubs Over Broadway.
Having finished Station Eleven, I immediately started a rewatch. Also, Drag Race Season 12 finally dropped on Paramount+, and it's the only season we haven't seen, so we dove right in.
The movies we're most excited to see are currently not streaming at all, or only available on Apple+. This is LITERALLY the only streaming service we don't have and NO. Just NO. I'd like Omicron to cool the fuck down before I go back to the theater.
I’m watching “The Lost Daughter” a bit at a time. For some reason, it makes me anxious. One of the many wonderful things about Olivia Colman is that her characters can go to unexpected places.
@Travis C. I liked “The Eternals” too. Great cast, gorgeous look, new ideas. I was expecting a mild backlash to Chloe Zhao’s next picture after “Nomadland” for having the temerity to having won Best Director and the subsequent strange need of some to prove that “she’s not all that”.
I’m also watching Australian Open tennis. In peace now, that a notorious entitled irresponsible rage-filled law-bending anti-vaxxer has actually had to accept some consequences for his actions and has been deported. Good riddance and hurrah to Australia. Best wishes for a great tournament.
I saw Drive My Car and, even though it was well-made, I couldn't help but be disappointed. It was so long and slow - and this is from someone who very rarely complains that a movie is too slow.
It's odd to me that it will join undeniable classics like The Social Network, Goodfellas, Schidler's List, etc. on the short list of films that won the triple-crown Best Picture critics' awards. There were so many more options this year, both in the English language and not. (I also doubt it will win Best International Film at the Oscars... a lot of voters will turn it off within the first hour.)
I'm looking forward to seeing The Tragedy of Macbeth in the theater later today.
Encanto - weird gripe here: media keeps talking about people going gaga for "We Don't Talk About Bruno" which - while is definitely a good song! - some version of it appears in virtually every Broadway musical? That layered song where every character has a different melody, but they all blend together amazingly? Anyway, cute film.
I just got a trial subscription to Apple TV, so I'll watch the new Macbeth sometime soon, but as one of the few fans enraptured by the Fassbender/Cotillard version a few years back, I am pretty sure it won't be my cuppa. The 2015 version was so earthy and feral.
CODA - a delight. Though how is Troy Kotsur getting all the Supporting Actor buzz and nothing for Daniel Durant?? I'd put them on the same acting level, so it's weird how lopsided the attention is.
Saw THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH last night and absolutely loved it. So minimalist and yet so haunting.
On the rest of the long weekend streaming list: I'M YOUR MAN, BERGMAN ISLAND, THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE, ETERNALS, and if time, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND.
Blissyfully Yours from 2004 (US release date) -- hey, Drive My Car isn't so novel in running its credits 45 minutes in. Apichatpong Weerasethakul did it first!
Ascension -- captivating once you get into its verite rhythms
Power of the Dog -- even better on a second watch!

The first half was great, second half ruined it for me.
Very bleak. Totally missing the fun of the other films.

Thanks—I think it’ll be Maid…when I finish (or pause) my binge of Call My Agent. I watched the pilot in September and hadn’t gotten around to diving in until last night. Love this show! Starting Season 2 now.
Loved The Tragedy of Macbeth (the cinematography! The design!) and I don’t usually like Shakespeare productions. Also watched Come From Away on Apple TV which I didn’t see on Broadway.
Also watched Cicada - a beautiful queer indie - rented on iTunes.
About to watch the new season of All Creatures Great and Small.
I hate where I live in terms of what never shows up on the big screen.

We got LICORICE PIZZA on December 25th, before many larger cities.
We never got MASS, THE HUMANS, or PIG at all.
And it looks like it's a no show for MACBETH, too. Sigh.
Watched The Eyes of Tammy Faye (at $3.99 even though I have an Amazon Prime membership - more money for Jeff Bezos!) and enjoyed it. A nicely written piece, and Jessica Chastain has a ball portraying Tammy Faye. Andrew Garflied is a close 2nd. I never followed the PTL Club or any of that stuff, including the news, so it was a fresh story to me, which is perhaps why I loved it. Ms Chastain might be overlooked for Best Actress, but that will be disappointing.
I was going to go see Licorice Pizza today but I'm sick with the flu as I cancelled my viewing the day earlier as we're now dealing with snow right now in the ATL.
Instead, I re-watched When Nirvana Comes to Britain as I also saw Amplified presentation on a documentary on Syd Barrett which was OK and just now on MUBI, Nimic by Yorgos Lanthimos.
@MrRipley79 Martha Plimpton’s performance is extraordinary. Hers, Margaret Qualley’s in MAID, and Jodie Comer’s in HELP are all extraordinary and my favorites of the year.
Finished S2 of How to with John Wilson (HBO). Gawd, I miss visiting NYC. And this show somehow highlights the best and weirdest things about the city.
CYRANO, got a free streaming link before a Q&A with Joe Wright. I kind of loved it.
A VERY BRITISH SCANDAL, two more extraordinary performances from Claire Foy and Paul Bettany playing thoroughly despicable real life people. Claire Foy, like Keira Knightley and others has a face for period drama tho. I’ve enjoyed the writer of this limited series, Sarah Phelps’ other work like the Agatha Christie adaptations, and this one is excellent.
