Podcast Guesting: On 'Bros' and Fantasy Oscar Drafts

I recently had the pleasure of guesting on two podcasts. The first was the annual fantasy draft episode of Oscar Wild wherein various pundits/Oscar fans chose our horses for the Oscar season. You'll recognize a lot of the lovely voices. It was fun which was expected but also extremely tense which was a surprise -- I drew the shortest straw so I was the last to choose a contender but the draft was in a snake order so thankfully it all sort of evened out. The episode was recorded BEFORE the festival premieres so some of the choices are already ouchies given the mixed/negative reception of a few of the films. I'm pretty happy about betting on Top Gun Maverick, Triangle of Sadness, and Elvis among others. The rest, we shall see.
Then this weekend in a change of pace I was the guest for a bonus episode of Hallmarkies, a podcast about romantic comedies with a focus on Hallmark movies. Since frequent Hallmark leading man Luke Macfarlane is the romantic co-lead of Billy Eichner's Bros, it was a natural topic for them to hit.
I really really loved Bros (even more than Baby Clyde did) and, though I wish I'd been a bit more eloquent in singing its praises, I hope you enjoy both the movie and this podcast. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I would suggest waiting until you do to listen to this since we talk about the plot in full and you'll want to save the surprises and great laugh lines for the moviegoing experience!

just came out of Bros, and i loved it so much. Then i read up on the Box Office news and found it's being reported on as a flop, and I'm gutted. It's such a smart movie, so referential yet fresh, even if flawed and generationally niche. So now I'm going to drown my sorrows / celebrate with this content so yay!!

I'll go see Bros the minute it opens because I like Billy, but I'm a bit tired of the whole "you're not a good gay if you don't see Bros" or the "you don't support black women" if you don't pay for the Viola Warrior thing.
That's not the way to support art or at least not the way I was told.
I was surprised by how much I loved Bros: Very very smart, very very funny while navigating very very tricky borders (not always successfully, but there's only so much we can ask of Billy E.). At the same time, I don't know why anyone thought this would be a crossover box office success in the first place: I would have absolutely predicted that its frankness about gay male sexuality would not appeal at all to close-minded straight-people (which I still think of as redundant, no offense to those of you who don't fit the stereotype). I don't think most straight people want to watch gay people have sex, talk frankly about gay sex, and endlessly ponder the contours of gay identity, even if much of the proceedings are funny and thought provoking. In the end, I think most queer people who see this movie will have a great time, and will also think a lot about their lives and loves and identify as a queer person in a non-queer world.
I loved it! Funny, sweet, and unapologetically gay, which I guess ended up being a problem. A friend and I saw with a nice size crowd on Saturday night and you could tell that 1. Everyone was having a great time and 2. Based on a lot of claps, snaps, and talkbacks I heard (which added to the fun) that we were definitely with a mostly queer audience. I think studios are basically rolling the dice by giving anything not squarely aimed at the widest audience possible a large-scale release. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for Bros, but I have a feeling it will be seen and loved by a much wider audience once it streams.
Also, can we just talk about how yummy Luke Macfarlane is?! Gracious.
Loved Bros, and loved listening to the Fantasy Draft. No idea who will win but be glad you weren't betting hard on Bardo and The Son.

dtsf -- i feel kinda the same way about BROS. I loved it but the idea that it would be a crossover hit was always strange. Straight people just dont dig happy gay movies (unless they're drag farcical like Birdcage or Priscilla Queen of the Desert) though they'll occassionally turn out for the gay tragedies.
If Billy Eichner’s vanity project doesn’t make tons of money then audiences are too homophobic to support LGBT stories. Quite a leap! One does not logically follow the other, sorry.
