What did you see over the weekend?
By Ben Miller
Unsurprisingly, horror films released in October rule the box office. Smile was able to snag the top spot behind a viral marketing campaign and a better-than-average critical recepiton (77% on Rotten Tomatoes). Unfortunately, the big story of the box office week was the failure of Bros. The Billy Eichner-starring film earned less than $5 million despite an A CinemaScore and critical praise (91% on RT). Plenty of people on Twitter have their opinions on the failure, but maybe we should let the film continue it's run before deeming it a failure. Regardless of the opening weekend, this doesn't bode well for the viability of LGBTQ+ studio content going forward.

The other big story is the success of Indian cinema. Ponniyin Selvan almost outgrossed Bros, while the other two others (Vikram Vedha and Brahmastra Part One: Shiva ended up in the Top 25). Even with little to no American-based marketing, these films can make a chunk of cash from North American markets.
What did you see these past few days? I attempted to knock out a few Best Picture winners I've never seen before, including All the King's Men and Wings. I also had a date night on Saturday and drunkenly watched See How They Run.

After spotting Lou on the TFE bottom feeder list for Best Actress, I curled up under a blanket to watch Allison Janney kick some ass. Even in a standard thriller, the Oscar winner builds a character of depth. Just watching how Lou favors her aging hands is engaging.
Janney won’t win another Oscar for this, but there are worse ways to spend a couple of hours. Reminiscent of Meryl Streep in The River Wild a couple of decades ago.
The Bros discourse has felt like a bit much. I suspect this is because there was a lot of pressure put on this film, as there almost always are for films about PoC and other non-dominant groups, and also because so many media writers were interested in its success.
I think the biggest challenge for any gay rom-com going fully mainstream, rather than just prestige-mainstream, is that there aren't any gay movie stars. Sure, we have plenty of television stars and prestige actors, but those men are mostly niche and we would never expect them to open a film at number one. The only LGBT actor who I could see opening a film above 10 million is Jodie Foster (who basically achieved stardom in the closet) and Ellen (who doesn't act anymore). Among male actors, there really aren't any.
Although Lou gets silly and melodramatic toward the end Janney had me rooting for the character, the Lou franchise starts here.
Doing my part... seeing Bros tonight.
This weekend we watched Cyd Charrisse in Party Girl, because it was leaving Criterion Channel, and it was just so-so.
I was really bummed about the box office for "Bros." It was the first movie I saw in a theater since pre-pandemic. The only reason I saw it in the theater was to support gay cinema, not because the experience was so much better. There were five people in the theater and a car commercial beforehand.
I am part of the problem. It's easier and cheaper to sit at home and watch a film. I did feel good supporting the art. And it's a genuinely great movie.
One other quick thing. We cannot completely blame straight people for its poor box office. I did a very rough figure. Less than 500,000 people went to see the movie with a box office of 4.8 million. There are more than half a million gay people and allies in this country.
Re-watches of Secretary on MUBI and the Donald Duck short Trick or Treat on Disney+ and... Blonde (which I thought was great, don't hate me unless you're one of those "woke" losers).
Watched Lou, it was good enough.
Saw a preview of Smile last Wednesday, it was ok.
Preview of Mr Harrigan's Phone-nothing special.
Not sure why Bros was theatres only. Looks like a streamer, and I'll catch it on Peacock.

The discourse around Bros' box office has been one big ol eye roll from just about everyone. It's weird to see Eichner blame straight people for not going when this is very much an instance of the call coming from inside the house. Gays are fickle and would rather not spend their money on going to the movies to see actual gay content. They'll wait for streaming where I am sure they will enjoy it but by then this will have passed and everyone will just remember it as a flop. Definitely means Eichner won't be in the Oscar host conversation, too.
The failure of Bros has me wondering if any (non-action) comedy is ever going to be a box office hit again. The whole genre seems to have gone off a cliff in recent years.
I watched "Don't Worry Darling" and really enjoyed it. Miss Flo is a star. Harry Styles was a place holder. Olivia Wilde was very good. I'm a woke loser and can't wait to watch "Blonde"
I caught ARGENTINA, 1985 - that country's Oscar submission.
It's good and entertaining - which may be a slight issue as it takes a very serious subject and gives it a lite approach in some aspects. It's still quite effective and Ricardo Darin is superb. Best Actor worthy, even.

Nice post. Keep it up. High refresh rates are required in the gaming sector in order to play fluidly and experience the greatest graphical effects. Although it might not seem like much, knowing exactly how much time your gaming setup is spending on each graphic component of a game can be quite helpful in determining how enjoyable your gaming experience will be. There are various Online refresh rate checker websites available to check monitor refresh rate.
