All Oscar Charts Revised!

by Nathaniel R

It never fails to be alarming but right about this time every year in early October, suddenly EVERYONE who is involved with the business of film awardage is abruptly working overtime after six months of hibernation. What's more, even film events that have nothing to do with the impending Oscar race, also land in October like New Fest (a festival we've truly longed to indulge in but have never been able to due to simultaneous NYFF/Middleburg). We only wish we could figure out some way to join everyone else in hibernation from March through September each year and still have an audience left in October so we'd be better rested. (Maybe less frequent posting in those months or a substack to fill in gaps? Subscribe plz.)

Next week, for instance, is insanity. There are Oscar related screenings and events in Los Angeles, NYFF events / premieres in New York, New Fest events in New York, and the Middleburg Film Festival in Virginia with our annual Oscar panel plus celebrity honorees attending like Stephanie Hsu, Noah Baumbach, and many more as a stop on their Oscar campaign trails. The jampacked schedule continues like this (though names and places and celebrities in attendance change) basically through the close of Oscar voting early next year. No time to breathe (that's okay) or write (not okay!). This is not a complaint so much as a "whew. here we go again". Until we get to full cateogry articles, see the updated charts!

Given I really hate the thought of the godawful THE BAD GUYS getting a nomination, I am happy if you leave its description unedited, because the word "pissability" could be an accurate new term to describe this outcome. :-)

FYI
The Greatest Beer Run Ever is mistakenly placed under Original Screenplay when it comes was adapted from the true account in the book by John ‘Chick’ Donahue and J. T. Molly.

Not a popular opinion I know but I was blown away by Blonde and its incandescent performance by Ana de Armas. Really pulling for her.

I agree with Michael. I thought de Armas, and Blonde in general, was great. I don't think it pulls any nominations given how reviled it has been, but I think time will be kind.

Would be beyond deserving in Actress, Cinematography, Costume, Makeup and Score.

There was always a foreign language film in best director in the last decade. You heard it here first: Park Chan Wook's MESMERIZING Decision to Leave is the one this year.

I would be shocked if Klondike made the international film line-up. I understand that nominating Ukraine may seem like the politically chic choice this year, but that film was just relentless miserablism, easily my least favorite theatrical experience of the year thus far. I can't see it besting a thriller from Park Chan-Wook, Holy Spider, or even something like Bardo, divisive as it is.

Andrew : thank you. I agree 💯 with everything you wrote. If enough people - and I know this is a stretch - put her at #1 or #2 on their ballots there's a slight chance she gets in.

Right now you're predicting the youngest best actress nominee to be in her 40s. Historically speaking, that simply will not happen.

IMDB says "Maestro" is in Post-Production, but I'm pretty sure the release date is Christmas. Shouldn't Bradley Cooper be in the conversation for Best Actor?

I am increasingly having the vibe that Everything Everywhere All At Once is going to triumph on Oscar night, regardless of the precursors...

Picture - Everything Everywhere All At Once
Director - Spielberg, The Fabelmans
Actress - Yeoh, EEAAO
Actor - Fraser, The Whale
S. Actress - Williams (after changing to supporting underperforming as lead)
S. Actor - Quan, EEAAO
Original - EEAAO
Adapted - The Whale
Score - The Fabelmans
Song - ?
Film Editing - Top Gun: Maverick (or EEAAO)
Costume - Babylon
Production Design - Babylon
Cinematography - Bardo
Sound - Top Gun: Maverick
VFX - EEAAO
Make Up - The Whale
Foreign - Alcarrás (Spain)

But your guess is as good as mine... aside from Fraser, Quan and TGM for sound, I don't think anything is that trustable
