April Foolish Pt 6 - Guesswork on 'Best Actress'

by Nathaniel R

Florence Pugh in The Wonder © Netflix

The past two years of Best Actress races have been incredible rides when uncertainty reigned about who might win. That's highly unusual which is why we prefer speculating about nominations when truly everything is up in the air... at least until precursors start arriving but that's still 8 months away. On the April Foolish top 20 BEST ACTRESS CHART you'll find 9 previous winners including Cate Blanchett and Olivia Colman, 5 (mostly) younger nominees still building momentum towards their first win including Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, and 6 women who've never landed a nomination though one of them (Michelle Yeoh) already should have.

OKAY DRUMROLL PLEASE... AND THE PREDICTIVE 5 ARE...

Tomorrow we'll conclude the first wave of prediction charts with Best Picture and Best Director...

Firstly when I predict I tend to go with at least 3 biopic performances so King,Ackie and Mirren plus Carey Mulligan and Cate Blanchett are my first 5.

I'd love Emily Watson to be a total knock out.

I think your top 5 + Blanchett makes a lot of sense as a starting short list. Although I continue to be very curious about what Blonde is going to be and wonder if de Armas might have a shot.

I would be so happy for acknowledgements for Danielle Deadwyler (my favourite character in The Harder They Fall), Michelle Yeoh (Michelle forever), and Dale Dickie (at long last, a romantic lead!).

I will be running out to see the very first day it opens:
- 3000 Years Of Longing (Miller, Swinton, Elba = bliss)
- The Woman King (Viola is a goddess)
- Nope (how to scare me this time, with Keke Palmer)

Michelle Williams not in your top 30?

reviewer -- oh i forgot to list her in the long list so i've added her. my hunch is that a24 has way too big of a slate this year to concentrate on her and she'll already be in the conversation for THE FABELMANS.

Danielle Deadwyler gave one of the greatest screen performances of recent years in STATION ELEVEN. She's gonna astound in TILL, especially with a director like Chinonye Chukwu at the helm.

Is the Jodie Foster/Annette Bening movie being released this year because if anyone is overdue it's The Bening.

I would also add Tang Wei in Decision to Leave

My top 5 in April 2022:

Cate Blanchett
Emily Watson
Tang Wei
Michelle Yeoh
Tilda Swinton

I’m praying that Michelle Yeoh gets nominated. Everything Everywhere All At Once and her performance blew my mind. If there is any justice that movie will get 4 acting nominations because those performances are just that good. Also, hoping it gets an original screenplay nomination at this point. If this movie doesn’t stay as my favorite of the year I’ll be surprised. I haven’t gone a day since seeing it without thinking about it. It feels like one of those movies where I’ll take something new from it after each rewatch.

I also have Florence Pugh high on my list but I assumed Don't Worry Darling would be a stronger awards play than The Wonder?

My first crack at 5:

Ana de Armas
Carey Mulligan
Florence Pugh
Margot Robbie
Michelle Yeoh

alt. Naomi Ackie, Olivia Colman, Cate Blanchett

So Winslet is saving herself for 2023 with that Lee Miller biopic.

There are so many worthy actresses, but it's a shame that youth series can't often promote talented girls to the top like this.

When discussing who I like from this list, here are my top 5:

Michelle Yeoh
Jennifer Lawrence
Zoe Kazan
Dakota Johnson
Emily Watson

Would love to see Anya Taylor-Joy here, but apparently either I've missed her name or she hasn't starred in anything recently? Anyway, I love her work and she's quite the talking point amongst young people on their sites like coomeet and on social media. Charismatic and cool, will look forward to her appearance in the tops.

I am greatly anticipating Women Talking. The celebrated novel by Miriam Toews provided insight into Mennonite culture that was revelatory.

Of course, the story of a patriarchy in an isolated cult in South America where eight men systematically over time sedated over 300 illiterate women with a bovine anesthetic and raped them is horrifying. In light of the crimes of Bill Cosby, the tale, based on a true account, takes on an immediacy that I suspect will attract a larger audience.

We would be able to anticipate more easily which actresses (Frances McDormand, Jessie Buckley, Rooney Mara, Judith Ivey, Claire Foy, and Sheila McCarthy) will be Oscar contenders if we knew which role they are playing. Interestingly, all involved have remained tight lipped on identifying in which role each actress has been cast.

Elazul -- it was listed as being in pre-production almost a full year ago but there have been no updates since. So not sure when we're getting that.

I can't not predict Emma Stone for Poor Things after the unforgettable performance Yorgos got out of her in The Favourite.

I'm thinking, Stone, Pugh, Robbie, Colman and King.

Rooney Mara was snapped with a pregnancy prosthetic in a set photo from Women Talking indicating she plays Ona Friesen, probably the lead of the film. Whishaw could be lead or more likely supporting but his role is good
