450 days until.... BARBIE

© Warner Bros

Warner Bros just released the first promotional image for Barbie. Though we wouldn't normally be so excited for a corporate ploy to sell more toys we have to think there's something larger and more clever at work here...

The main reason for the faith is Greta Gerwig in the director chair and a screenplay by Greta and her partner Noah Baumbach. The synopsis is as simple as this "a doll living in 'Barbieland' is expelled for not being perfect enough, which sets off an adventure in the real world". This leads us to expect something along the fish out of water comic lines of... Enchanted

The cast is delicious, too. Margot Robbie is Barbie, Ryan Gosling is Ken, and the supporting cast includes (deep breath) Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Issa Rae, Emerald Fennell, Rhea Perlman, America Ferrera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Connor Swindells, Scott Evans, Hari Nef, Ritu Arya, Ncuti Gatwa, Will Ferrell, and Michael Cera. The film opens July 21st, 2023. Will you be playing with this doll in theaters?

In 20 years this will be remembered as a weirdo thing like Robert Altman's Popeye

I hate almost everything about this.

That being said, get that bag, Greta!

I'm increasingly getting excited for this! The cast is just aces and I trust Greta completely.

This can go wrong in so many different ways.

I'm getting major Sharon Tate vibes from that photo. I thought Robie did a good job in OUATIH so I'll be cautiously optimistic about this.

I am very excited for this and glad to see that most are giving Gerwig the benefit of the doubt (she's earned it).

Hmmm, I wonder if this is the first movie I will go see since the pandemic. Also, I'm a senior citizen and resist like mad having to spend $20+ to go to the theater. I'm a popcorn freak, and I have to have the Coke too. But anyway, I have a speckled past with Barbie. I had 3 sisters and was surrounded by Barbie, Ken, Midge, Skipper and Scooter, and regularly played the Barbie board game, with Ken, Allen, Bob and Poindexter. Argh!

I think I might go see this. The cast alone sounds fucking insane. I know I hate this song to death but... I feel like "Barbie Girl" would feel right for that film.

I have no idea where Gerwig and team could possibly go with this, but an absolute YES
