What did you see over the weekend?

by Nathaniel R

Family movies The Bad Guys and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continued to do well this past weekend but Liam Neeson's latest revenge thriller (it's called Memory but deja vu would be more accurate since he makes so many of these programmers) struggled to generate any interest. The big box office story (until Doctor Strange next weekend) remains the Daniels hilarious action-comedy-sci-fi-oddity Everything Everywhere All At Once. It was actually up 2% from last weekend; You're not supposed to go up on subsequent weeks, only down! That's the power of true Word of Mouth hits and they're few and far between in the current era since mainstream moviegoing is almost exclusively led by brand awareness rather than a combo of that and word of mouth as in ye olden times of, oh, 10-15 years ago...

What did you see? I opted for live theater and streaming (Under the Banner of Heaven) this weekend and then on Monday a media screening of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse in Madness (review soon).

Rewatched Sweet Dreams for the first time in 35 years and... I loved it! Beautiful gowns by Ann Roth and a great Jessica Lange -less contrived.

I saw Everything Everywhere All At Once in a packed arthouse-ish theater. I almost didn't get a seat. What a great time at the movies.

I'm also listening to the Best Actress "And the Runner-Up Is Podcast," so I saw some really great films (Brief Encounter), solid old school films (The Yearling, To Each His Own, Sister Kenny), and an entertaining stinker (Duel in the Son). Catching up on 1947 and 1948, and looking forward to hearing Nathaniel's episode!

I watched The Batman. It didn't need to be 3 hours long, but it desperately wants to be a rated R movie. I was most impressed by the score. However, most of the actors didn't leave any impression on me.

It was an eclectic mix for me

The Grey Fox 1983 Richard Farnsworth in a Golden Globe nominated role, beautiful scenery and feel for the period.

From a Whisper to a Scream 1987 Vincent Price anthology horror, quite good considering it's meagre budget.

Whatever happened to Aunt Alice 1969 old biddy thriller though Page was only her 40's,Ruth Gordon is always a great watch

Alien for the 1 millionth time.

Blow Out a De Palma classic with Travolta and an early role for John Lithgow,he started villaining early on,under discussed compared to Carrie and The Untouchables.

First time views of Broadcast News and Peggy Sue Got Married! Rewatched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in the cinema and I was not emotionally prepared for that. And then I rewatched The Age of Innocence last night because the gilded glamor of the Met Gala was so disappointing and gosh, that film is as exquisite and devastating as ever.

Opening weekend of the Spanish Film Festival, and I saw THE REALM OF GOD - not bad for a debut film.

A time of sadness, as I saw my last ever "new film from Roger Michell" - ELIZABETH: A PORTRAIT IN PART(S). Much better than I expected - I was thinking it would be more of TEA WITH THE DAMES (one of Michell's lazist movies) but it was much more creative and even subversive at times. Glad to end my association with him on this note.

And finally got around to THE LOST CITY - barely gets a pass. I am not sure what it was about Bullock's performance (I am guessing repetition of things she has done before) but it mostly left me cold. And Daniel Racliffe is awful. Thank goodness for the brief bits of fun from Brad Pitt, otherwise it'd be a write-off and a contender for worst movie of 2022.

Mainly re-watches in a couple of short films by Andrea Arnold on MUBI (that I already own on DVD) plus a Popeye short on MUBI that I saw as a kid and another re-watch of Doctor Strange in anticipation for the new film.

@nathaniel Loved both of them! Peggy Sue was so much more quiet and introspective than other teen films with this gimmick and that score was impossibly moving. Broadcast News was also wonderful - electric ensemble, so warm and lived in. May have to be included in my cart for the next Criterion sale.

Thanks to your coverage of it - I watched Lost Illusions which is now on iTunes to rent.

Our movie club just watched Funny Face and Victor/Victoria back to back. Paris musicals are special things. Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews, Fred Astaire, Kay Thompson, Robert Preston, Lesley Ann Warren. Special actors. The hubbub over Meryl's first Best Actress win has sadly overshadowed the extraordinary work by Jessica Lange and Julie Andrews.
