Complete Emmy Nominations

by Nathaniel R and Christopher James

JB Smoove and Melissa Fumero (who will soon be costarring in a Netflix show called Blockbuster) announced the Emmy nominations this morning. They started with a brief "bit" where they held JB's Emmy like it was a crying fragile infant before getting down to swift business with the headline categories (they did not announce supporting categories live just leads and series. True to the Television Academy's form, it was mostly a case of their old favourites landing in big categories even if the season or show in question wasn't as heralded as usual (hi Killing Eve in the acting categories or Sarah Paulson breaking through the super-stacked Best Actress Limited Series category for a performance nobody had talked about for months).

One of the most interesting things about the nominations was that recency bias paid off in the series categories but did NOT pay off in Limited Series where almost all of the nominees came from the fall/winter... as if the voters just couldn't sift through the spring/summer glut of programming. We'll review several categories at length over the next two months (the Emmys are on September 12th) but after the jump the  nomination list with a few comments and how well we did on our predictions...

How did we do on our predictions? Christopher James scored the best with 73% predictions correct, Claudio just behind with 69% and Nathaniel and Abe tied for third place with 65%. Congrats, Chris!

Nomination Leaders and Losers: Succession led all drama programming with 25 Emmy nominations. Ted Lasso led the comedies with 20 nominations (with Hacks and Only Murders close behind with 17 each). The White Lotus led all limited series with 20 nods. The losers were "final seasons" with This is Us, Black-ish, Insecure  failing to make significant showings despite taking their final bows. Ozark, with a shorter run, escaped this fate.

Snubbees: Too many shows to list of course but the most high profile critical darling to fare poorly was Pachinko, though it did score a single nomination for Main Title Design.

LIMITED SERIES / TV MOVIE

OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES

  • Dopesick
  • The Dropout
  • Inventing Anna
  • Pam & Tommy
  • The White Lotus

A big surprise to see Maid passed over here (all four of us predicted it) for the less critically embraced Inventing Anna. And for none of the late openers (Under the Banner of Heaven / The Staircase, etcetera) to place. The team majorly face-planted here with no one predicting either Inventing Anna OR Pam & Tommy.

OUTSTANDING TV MOVIE

  • Chip N Dale: Rescue Rangers
  • Ray Donovan: The Movie
  • Reno 911: The Hunt for QAnon
  • The Survivor
  • Zoey's Extraordinary Christmas

None of us predicted Reno 911! to place but all of us predicted The Fallout (which was left out). Oops.

LEAD ACTRESS, LIMITED SERIES

  • Toni Collette, The Staircase
  • Julia Garner, Inventing Anna
  • Lily James, Pam & Tommy
  • Sarah Paulson, Impeachment
  • Margaret Qualley, Maid
  • Amanda Seyfried, The Dropout

Sarah Paulson was the big surprise here (especially since the talk about her performance largely landed on the controversial fatsuit). It was not a good morning for movie stars moonlighting in TV series as Michelle Pfeiffer, Julia Roberts, Viola Davis, and Jessica Chastain were all passed over for high profile work. (Nathaniel was the only one to predict Toni Collette but none of us saw Sarah Paulson coming.)

LEAD ACTOR, LIMITED SERIES

  • Colin Firth, The Staircase
  • Andrew Garfield, Under the Banner of Heaven
  • Oscar Isaac, Scenes from a Marriage
  • Michael Keaton, Dopesick
  • Himesh Patel, Station Eleven
  • Sebastian Stan, Pam & Tommy

Ths big snub here was Ben Foster who won raves for the movie The Survivor, but more and more voters just aren't watching telefilms, prefering limited series. Samuel L Jackson, hot off his Honorary Oscar was predicted in several quarters of the internet for Last Days of Ptolemy Grey but that didn't happen either. (None of us predicted Patel or Stan here. Whoops.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, LIMITED/MOVIE

  • Connie Britton, The White Lotus
  • Jennifer Coolidge, The White Lotus
  • Alexandra Daddario, The White Lotus
  • Kaitlyn Dever, Dopesick
  • Natasha Rothwell, The White Lotus
  • Sydney Sweeney, The White Lotus
  • Mare Winningham, Dopesick

We didn't see the complete dominance of White Lotus coming (though we're thrilled at the Natasha Rothwell nomination!). Chris was the only one to correctly predict Mare Winningham for Dopesick. The whole team predicted Andie Macdowell for Maid but she was shut-out, despite the fun narrative of playing onscreen mom to her real life daughter Margaret Qualley.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, LIMITED / MOVIE

  • Murray Bartlett, The White Lotus
  • Jake Lacy, The White Lotus
  • Will Poulter, Dopesick
  • Seth Rogen, Pam & Tommy
  • Peter Sarsgaard, Dopesick
  • Michael Stuhlbarg, Dopesick
  • Steve Zahn, The White Lotus

None of us saw Seth Rogen coming (is it because he was the dullest part of Pam & Tommy and we kept wanting to get back to the titular characters?). Nathaniel and Chris both were the sole predictors of Will Poulter and Jake Lacy, respectively. The surprise snub here was Naveen Andrews for The Dropout, whom literally all of us here at TFE and most pundits around the web were predicting.

DRAMA

DRAMA SERIES

  • Better Call Saul (S6a)
  • Euphoria (S2)
  • Ozark (S4)
  • Severance (S1)
  • Squid Game (S1)
  • Stranger Things (S4)
  • Succession (S3)
  • Yellowjackets (S1)

The five most widely expected series were nominated but it was bad news for the sixth and final season of once Emmy popular This is Us which didn't place. One of TV's most popular series, Yellowstone, was also passed over. Cláudio was the only one of us to predict Euphoria but we're thrilled to see it in the lineup after its miss last season.

LEAD ACTRESS, DRAMA

  • Jodie Comer, Killing Eve (S4)
  • Laura Linney, Ozark (S4)
  • Melanie Lynskey, Yellowjackets (S1)
  • Sandra Oh, Killing Eve (S4)
  • Reese Witherspoon, The Morning Show (S2)
  • Zendaya, Euphoria (S2)

Mandy Moore was widely expected to get a goodbye nomination for This is Us but that didn't happen. Interestingly the voters went with Reese Witherspoon instead of  Aniston for The Morning Show (a twist none of us predicted). The mild surprise was Killing Eve getting two slots despite a final season that seemed to please approximately no one (except Emmy voters)

LEAD ACTOR, DRAMA

  • Jason Bateman, Ozark (S4)
  • Brian Cox, Succession (S3)
  • Lee Jung-jae, Squid Game (S1)
  • Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul (S6a)
  • Adam Scott, Severance (S1)
  • Jeremy Strong, Succession (S3)

A largely expected list apart but for the absence of Sterling K Brown, who has been nominated for every other season of This is Us

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, DRAMA

  • Patricia Arquette, Severance (S1)
  • Julia Garner, Ozark (S4)
  • Jung Ho-Yeon, Squid Game (S1)
  • Christina Ricci, Yellowjackets (S1)
  • Rhea Seehorn, Better Call Saul (S6a)
  • J Smith-Cameron, Succession (S3)
  • Sarah Snook, Succession (S3)
  • Sydney Sweeney, Euphoria (S2)

Burned by five seasons of snubs for Rhea Seehorn none of us predicted her. But it was finally her time for Better Call Saul. This is the acting category that Team Experience had the best prediction statistics in this season. It's worth noting here that neither of the oft-predicted (here and elsewhere Stranger Things actresses (Sadie Sink and Millie Bobbie Brown) showed up. Stranger Things scored no acting nominations this season but it did score in other big ticket places like Series despite having its most over produced, most overly plotted most repetitive season ever.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, DRAMA

  • Nicolas Braun, Succession
  • Billy Crudup, The Morning Show
  • Kieran Culkin, Succession
  • Park Hae-soo, Squid Game
  • Matthew Macfadyen, Succession
  • John Turturro, Severance
  • Christopher Walken, Severance
  • Oh Yeoung-su, Squid Game

We unaninomously had faith in Giancarlo Esposito for Better Call Saul but he was left out! None of us predicted Christopher Walken and in hindsight perhaps that was silly given how memorable he was (albeit in a small role) in Severance.

GUEST ACTRESS, DRAMA

  • Hope Davis, Succession (S3)
  • Marcia Gay Harden, The Morning Show (S2)
  • Martha Kelly, Euphoria (S2)
  • Sanaa Lathan, Succession (S3)
  • Harriet Walter, Succession (S3)
  • Lee You-Mi, Squid Game (S1)

Thrilled to see Martha Kelly's deadpan drug dealer here from Euphoria , proving her very singular acting style can meet the demands of drama just as well as its always met the demands of comedy.

GUEST ACTOR, DRAMA

  • Adrien Brody, Succession (S3)
  • James Cromwell, Succession (S3)
  • Colman Domingo, Euphoria (S2)
  • Arian Moayed, Succession (S3)
  • Tom Pelphrey, Ozark (S4)
  • Alexander Skarsgård, Succession (S3)

The guest categories are a joke given that they're not juried and are thus invariably dominated by just the most popular shows of the moment, regardless of performance quality. That said it's a strong category this year. Thrilled for Colman Domingo's nomination in particular as he is extraordinary in that recurring role in Euphoria  and his submitted episode was a major highlight of this second season.

CASTING, DRAMA SERIES

  • Euphoria (S2)
  • Ozark (S4)
  • Severance (S1)
  • Stranger Things (S4)
  • Succession (S3)
  • Yellowjackets (S1)

We've always been curious about shows getting casting nominations well into their run (hello Ozark and Stranger Things -why) as this category should be dominated by new shows each year. There weren't many new characters in Stranger Things season 4 and the newbies definitely weren't the highlights apart from the villain.

PICTURE EDITING, DRAMA SERIES

  • Euphoria

  • Succession "all the bells say" -Mark Mylod
  • Succession "the disruption" - Cathy Yan
  • Succession "too much birthday" - Lorene Scafaria
  • Yellowjackets "pilot" - Karyn Kusama

WRITING, DRAMA

  • Better Call Saul "plan and execution" - Thomas Schnauz
  • Ozark, "a hard way to go" - Chris Mundy
  • Severance "the we we are" - Dan erickson
  • Squid Game "one lucky day" -Hwang Dong-hyuk

COMEDY

COMEDY SERIES

  • Abbott Elementary (S1)
  • Barry (S3)
  • Curb Your Enthusiasm (S11)
  • Hacks (S2)
  • Marvelous Mrs Maisel (S4)
  • Only Murders in the Building (S1)
  • Ted Lasso (S2)
  • What We Do In the Shadows (S3)

What We Do in the Shadows managed to hold on to its fans despite little Emmy buzz (and an early release), and Curb Your Enthusiasm didn't spoil its record for being nominated for its every season no matter how long its been off the air, effectively blocking the surging The Great (which landed in both lead categories) from competing. Critics won't be pleased that Reservation Dogs is missing.

LEAD ACTRESS, COMEDY

  • Rachel Brosnahan, Marvelous Mrs Maisel (S4)
  • Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary (S1)
  • Kaley Cuoco, Flight Attendant (S2)
  • Elle Fanning, The Great (S2)
  • Issa Rae, Insecure (S5)
  • Jean Smart, Hacks (S2)

Tough break for Selena Gomez, despite being in the buzzies show (Only Murders). Critical darling Sarah Lanchashire (Julia) also didn't place.

LEAD ACTOR, COMEDY

  • Donald Glover, Atlanta (S3)
  • Bill Hader, Barry (S3)
  • Nicholas Hoult, The Great (S2)
  • Steve Martin, Only Murders in the Building (S1)
  • Martin Short, Only Murders in the Building (S1)
  • Jason Sudeikis, Ted Lasso (S2)

Anthony Anderson has previously been nominated for every season of Black-ish but that streak ended. Sad that the men of What We Do in the Shadows can't get arrested!

SUPPORTING ACTRESS, COMEDY

  • Alex Borstein, Marvelous Mrs Maisel (S4)
  • Hannah Einbinder, Hacks (S2)
  • Janelle James, Abbott Elementary (S1)
  • Kate McKinnon, Saturday Night Live (S47)
  • Sarah Niles, Ted Lasso (S2)
  • Sheryl Lee Ralph, Abbott Elementary (S1)
  • Juno Temple, Ted Lasso (S2)
  • Hannah Waddingham, Ted Lasso (S2)

Though none of us predicted her, it's thrilling to see Sarah Niles land a nomination for her psychiatrist on Ted Lasso. She was such an ingenious addition to Ted Lasso in its second season and such a different flavor for the show (mellow, reserved, and lacking in sentiment) while still contributing to the overall optimism and sweetness of the show. This category would be simply the best if they could  a) make Saturday Night Live ineligible again -- McKinnon is always great but it's just not what the category is meant for -- and b) denounce  blatant category fraud like Hannah Einbinder (fabulous on the show but inarguably a lead). Nathaniel was the only pundit here to predict Sheryl Lee Ralph but we were mostly got this one right apart from Sarah Niles.

SUPPORTING ACTOR, COMEDY

  • Anthony Carrigan, Barry (S3)
  • Brett Goldstein, Ted Lasso (S2)
  • Toheeb Jimoh, Ted Lasso (S2)
  • Nick Mohammed, Ted Lasso (S2)
  • Tony Shalhoub, Marvelous Mrs Maisel (S4)
  • Tyler James Williams, Abbott Elementary (S1)
  • Henry Winkler, Barry (S3)
  • Bowen Yang, Saturday Night Live (S47)

None of us predicted Tyler James Williams or Toheeb Jimoh but it wasn't from lack of worthiness but lack of name recognition. Toheeb Jimoh in particular was a major MVP of his season with Lasso smartly expanding its focus to become even more of an ensemble show. Very happy to see them both nominated! Now if only voters  could move on from their default Tony Shalhoub obsession (12 nominations and 4 wins in the past 19 years!)

GUEST ACTRESS, COMEDY SERIES

  • Jane Adams, Hacks (S2)
  • Harriet Samson Harris, Hacks (S2)
  • Jane Lynch, Only Murders in the Building (S1)
  • Laurie Metcalf, Hacks (S2)
  • Kaitlin Olson, Hacks (S2)
  • Harriet Walter, Ted Lasso (S2)

Hacks thoroughly dominating. But speaking personally (it's Nathaniel) I would have only nominated Harriet Samson Harris despite thoroughly loving Hacks. Four nominations from Hacks and yet they missed its second best submission in this particular category (Ming-Na Wen as a grudge-holding talent manager). We have to assume Olson's inclusion in particular is an apology for missing a supporting actress nomination for Season 1 in which she was fabulous (she was barely in Season 2 and her screen husband was the focus of her episode).

GUEST ACTOR, COMEDY SERIES

  • Jerrod Carmichael, Saturday Night Live (S)
  • Bill Hader, Curb Your Enthusiasm (S11)
  • James Lance, Ted Lasso (S2)
  • Nathan Lane, Only Murders in the Building (S1)
  • Christopher McDonald, Hacks (S2)
  • Sam Richardson, Ted Lasso (S2)

It's exceedingly rare to see such Saturday Night Live restraint in the guest comedy categories. Only 1 of the 12 nominees was from SNL which has not happened in as long as we can recall... possibly ever. We tried to find a year but after going back over 12 years still couldn't find one. (there's usually 3-4 nominees from SNL.)

Yes, it's official. Emmy voters are much lazier than Oscar voters. I don't think they even watch television. Ugh. A couple of bright spots, but overall, lazy and predictable.

When are the Tonys?

July 12, 2022 | Registered CommenterPam

Selena Gomez being snubbed is ridiculous, but I'm not surprised. People are not respecting her comedic skills, even though she's clearly holding her own against two comedy giants, and is so necessary to the success of the show.

Certain shows dominating certain categories feels really lazy. White Lotus was amazing, but Sydney Sweeney and Connie Britton didn't need to be nominated for it (in my opinion... good, but best of the year roles / performances? No.).

VARIETY SPECIAL, LIVE really needs to limit its number of nominees. There just isn't enough to choose from and The Oscars, Grammys, Tonys etc get guaranteed nods each year whether they deserve it or not (mostly NOT, in my opinion).

I feel like the TV Academy is actively conspiring against me by nominating all those Marvel and Star Wars shows in costume design. Now I have to watch them, and I don't like it one bit :(

In other news, I'm rather disappointed by the Limited Series categories, but Toni Collette is a pleasant surprise. I thought the size of her role would work against her getting a nomination, but I'm glad I was wrong. Indeed, she probably gets my vote from the nominees I've seen in that category.

Really sad for MacDowell, Moore, Roberts, Hathaway, and Leto.

Is ABBOTT ELEMENTARY the only network show to get an acting nomination??

Usually in years past at least Blackish/This is Us/The Good Place competed. I bet next year the number reduces to zero.

Things I'm here for:
- ZENDAYA AND COLMAN DOMINGO. The show, thankfully, has gotten much better and they're both absolutely the shit.
- Pam & Tommy getting that haul (outside of one, who I'll get to)! Easily one of the most exciting things on any streaming service.
- Oscar Issac! I thought for sure he was gonna get snubbed! Albeit I figured Chastain was in, due to that post-Oscar glow...not that she wouldn't have deserved it (she defs did!).

Things I'm not here for:
- Seth Rogan. Like you said, he's the weakest part of the show.
- Selena not getting in! I'm hoping for her to get in next year tho.
- Kate McKinnon. Imma be honest, I think she's so utterly unfunny and brings down almost every sketch with her mugging.
- Schmigadoon! not getting in Supporting Actress for Cheno!
- SOOOO many categories have way too many nominees and shows filling up those spots!
- ALSO, they need to rework the names of a sizable majority of the categories and how shows can get in them. Or at least streamline some.

The Martha Kelly nomination for Euphoria is AMAZING! And I'm very happy Sheryl Lee Ralph got in for Abbott Elementary.

But the Succession "Guest" nominations ... I mean I like the show too, but I'd completely forgotten Sanaa Lathan was even in it. Feels like if you were cast on it last season getting a nomination was in your contract. Although that said, it gets 4 in for Guest Actor but nothing for (the extremely memorable) Justin Kirk? Weird.

That Lead Actress, Limited Series line-up is sad, apart from Toni Collette and Amanda Seyfried. I wish Pfeiffer, Hathaway, and/or Roberts had made it in.

Really glad for:
Martha Kelly
Rhea Seehorn (finally)
J. Smith-Cameron
Euphoria's series nomination

Sad for:
No Selena Gomez
Very little Pachinko

Dumb nominations:
Anything for Pam and Tommy, Inventing Anna, The Morning Show, or Killing Eve (If they wanted to nominate Sandra Oh, it's too bad they didn't watch The Chair). All watchable, but not in a good way!

July 12, 2022 | Registered Commenterjules

RHEA SEEHORN! Finally! But did they see the same season as me? If they did, Tony Dalton would've netted an easy nod as well for that show.

Most Fuckable Category is LIMITED SERIES, ACTOR. I mean... Sebastian Stan, Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac and Hamish Patel! I wouldn't kick out Michael Keaton or Colin Firth either.

I love Hacks, Ted Lasso, Succession and White Lotus a lot, but the nominators were pretty damn lazy in giving those shows SO MANY acting nominations. Really wished the TV Academy spread the wealth a bit more.

Nothing for SOMETHING SOMEWHERE is absolutely heinous. And just 1 nod for PACHINKO and GILDED AGE is confounding BUT then again there's just so many damn TV shows!

July 12, 2022 | Registered CommenterRyan T.

I'm happy for Marvel, Sydney Sweeney, Lily James, Melanie Lynskey, Sebastian Stan, Seth Rogen, and the late, great Chadwick Boseman.

Sucks that Selena Gomez didn't get nominated as she is starting to get better as an actress.

Is there anymore nominations relating to documentaries? I was hoping The Beatles: Get Back would get more than just sound.

July 12, 2022 | Registered Commenterthevoid99

thevoid99 -- i'm not sure about docs. i thought i got everything but the emmys are very confusing and there are so many different ways to look up "all nominations" but most of those pages dont' have all the categories so it's very cross your fingers and hope it's correct.

I was hoping they would show a lot of love to the cast of Squid Game and I'm not disappointed. Lee You-Mi is an excellent nominee. Her character is one I think about quite a lot, especially in her big episode.

I'm always team A Black Lady Sketch Show. I'm disappointed they didn't get in for Guest Actress again, but the Emmys showered the original cast and creative team with love between the nominations for the show, Insecure, and Abbott Elementary.

July 13, 2022 | Registered CommenterRobert G

Sydney Sweeney got two nominations: Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Euphoria, and Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for White Lotus.
Is hers the only case?

July 13, 2022 | Registered CommenterMarcos Celesia

@marcos celesia - off the top of my head: harriet walter - guest in drama and comedy, bill hader - lead in comedy, guest in comedy [plus his writing and directing noms]

i'm most astounded by the absence of barry's sarah goldberg - i thought she'd be winning

July 13, 2022 | Registered Commenterpar

Thanks for putting all the nominees. Some fun facts from below the line is that Rhea Seehorn is now a double nominee on her first outing. That’s pretty rare for Emmy (unless they’re a writer and actor).

Also, Anthony Anderson was nominated for a short form category, so while he missed, this is his 8th year in a row being nominated. This reminds me of how Christine Baranski was almost nominated for every season of The Good Wife, but ended with a guest acting nom for another show. Same with Stockard Channing getting passed over for the final season of the West Wing. Emmy still loves them, but not in their show.

Also, a former President is nominated. Is Obama the first one?

July 13, 2022 | Registered CommenterJoe G.

Donald Trump was nominated eight times during the run of The Apprentice. During that period, he started tweeting that the Emmys were rigged against him.

Jacqueline Kennedy won an Emmy (the Trustee Award) in 1962 for her television special A Tour of the White House with Mrs. John F. Kennedy.

July 13, 2022 | Registered CommenterFinbar McBride

Joe G. - that's a different Anthony Anderson, but I wonder how many voters didn't realize that? LOL

July 13, 2022 | Registered CommenterStephenM

I fear we're going to lose to Zendaya. Again. But it's an honor...ah, you know the rest.
