Who deserves Emmy nominations from The Pitt?

Have you been Pitt-pilled? I have fallen in love with the Max original series about a single extended shift at a Pittsburgh ER that spans fifteen hours of near-real-time storytelling. It's old-fashioned and not especially high-concept, a bit preachy but balanced with feeling, interspersed character studies within a professional setting that leans on bloody melodrama without ever toppling away from medical and labor realities. A critical and popular hit, the series is well poised to dominate the next Emmy Awards, prompting many questions about what honors it'll get and, perhaps more interestingly, what it deserves. When it comes to the cast, these matters are particularly tough since the show relies so heavily on its actors' ensemble dynamics, from The Pitt's main doctors to patients who only show up for a couple of episodes.

Following Nathaniel's example with The White Lotus, I propose a vote to see what the readership thinks. But, of course, I need to add some commentary of my own…

2024 Emmy Nominations - Comedy

PALM ROYALE secured 11 Emmy nominations including Comedy Series and acting nods for Carol Burnett and Kristen Wiig

Hey people out there in the dark! The strike threw off the timeline and we have not one but two Emmy award ceremonies this year. The first was for the 2022/2023 season and the upcoming 76th Emmys are for programs that aired between June 1st, 2023 and May 31st of 2024. That means some shows that people are discussing heavily right now, like House of Dragons, The Acolyte, or The Bear, are either ineligible (the first two) or are being honored for their previous seasons (like the latter).  Shogun led for Drama with an enormous 25 nominations but  The Bear was close behind with 23 nominations in the comedy categories (whether or not it belongs there is another conversation). 

You can see an exhaustive list of all 2,000,001 categories at the Emmy official site but let’s discuss the main nominations across the three chief ‘sections’ starting with Comedy. We have to break this into three posts since there's so much to discuss...

Nicole Kidman Tribute: Big Little Lies (2017)

Wow. The power of women.

 I remember Nicole Kidman's speech at the 2018 Golden Globes like it was yesterday. You certainly could sense a genuine sisterhood between the five principle stars (Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz and Laura Dern) of Big Little Lies, HBO's unexpectedly titanic, initially limited series. Amid the backdrop of #MeToo, it was quite a moment for Nicole Kidman and company.

The actress's output in the 2010s was, charitably, something of a mixed bag. For every dazzling turn in Rabbit Hole (2010), The Paperboy (2012), or Paddington (2014), there were plenty of barely released (if at all) misfires like Tresspass (2011), The Railway Man (2013), and Queen of the Desert (2015). With the notable exception of Lion (2016), things looked awfully bleak for Kidmaniacs stateside heading into a post-presidential election year...
