First & Last 034

Can you guess the movie from its first and last shot?

Party music is blasting. No, it's not a Spider-Man movie despite the upside down cityscape. The next cut, once fireworks go off, turns the image right-side up.

And a shot of an FBI building. The movie is from 2023. The answer is after the jump...

Scroll down.

This one is To Catch a Killer (2023) starring Shailene Woodley as a traumatized cop who an FBI bigwig (Ben Mendelsohn) realizes has the gift for thinking quickly in catastrophes and chasing leads after a sniper takes several lives in the quite chaotically disturbing opening scene.

The movie was met with ho-hum reviews, but it's a totally solid crime investigation thriller so apparently critics just weren't feeling generous in April. If you're in the mood for that particular genre one of these nights -- I was the night I watched it -- it will definitely hit the spot. The director is Damián Szifron who you will remember hit the international scene very potently with the exciting Oscar-nominated short story collection Wild Tales (2014). Somehow this is his first feature since that splashy breakthrough. Why did it take so long? Why?

To Catch a Killer is now streaming on Hulu.

The only acceptable follow-up to Wild Tales would be Wild Tales 2
