Best Supporting Actress in the 80s: An Alternative Oscar History
Since the Best Actress post did so well, let's tackle another category in my Alternate Oscar history. We're still keeping with the thespians and the divas, because those are always the most beloved races here at The Film Experience. Once again, I followed Oscar eligibility rules when building these ballots, but also included honorable mentions, ineligible standouts, and some enticing prospects for some future movie-watching adventures. Any and all recommendations are welcome, of course, and you're welcome to tear these lineups to shreds – as if you needed an invitation. From 1980 to 1989, from actresses playing actresses to screen sirens for the videotape age, here are my Best Supporting Actress picks for our "Totally Awesome 80s" month…

Reader Comments (17)
I really love Lena Olin in both of her mentions. She's a great actress and always delivers in supporting roles, but especially at the start of her career in American films. Given how much love they got from Oscar, I was always surprised that she was overlooked for her roles in Chocolat and the Reader.
Two nominees from this decade that I would include on my list: Glenn Close in The World According to Garp and Sigourney Weaver in Working Girl. I've seen Weaver called one note before, but when the note is as funny as she is, I'm totally fine with it. Her physical comedy throughout really sells it.
Mama, I found Natassja Kinski for Paris, Texas the exquisite choice par excellence.
Chus Lampreave is the winner of the year and Veroniqua Forquè is also nominated.
How did you dare to put Sofia in the ballot and let Shug out?????
I think to get the full measure of Sigourney Weaver as an actress you practically have to love her performance in Working Girl. Comedy is such an important aspect of her star persona and she's never been funnier (or more fully realized in a comedy of such high quality) as WG, one would be pressed to say she's "better" in Heartbreakers or Galaxy Quest or Ghostbusters or Baby Mama...
So many great performances and love the affection towards genre films, but I'd flag a handful for Category Fraud. Karen Allen (Raiders), McDormand (Blood Simple), Rossellini (Blue Velvet) are leads imo.
Joe G. -- I like don't love Weaver in WORKING GIRL. But you're right to point out her physical comedy, which, to me, is the performance's best asset. Once she gets that cast, every gesture is a masterclass in finding funny business in something so simple as turning, lying in bed, etc.
Gallavich -- I've always preferred Winfrey to Avery in THE COLOR PURPLE, sorry. I should probably re-watch WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS?. I wager Forquè might jump into my Honorable Mentions once I do.
DK -- I think I'm a pretty big Weaver fan without necessarily loving her WORKING GIRL turn. Indeed, I'd say she does a more interesting version of this amoral executive within a comedic register type in THE TV SET. Though I would agree the Kasdan film pales in comparison to WORKING GIRL beyond Weaver.
Jordan DF -- I disagree on Allen, but have often debated the matter of McDormand and Rossellini. Perhaps you're right.
Claudio you really are spoiling us here, love some of your choices, offbeat but such good roles and actresses,my winners come first.

Weaver is just as good in The TV Set just different, more ballsy if that's possible than Katherine Parker, she even makes those Warhol portraits a punch line, the pose and look, she's giving face for the ages.
I think Allen is supporting to Indy,it's Harrison's film through and through but she's a pivotal part of it.
I like the nod to Amy Wright but I have her in for Inside Moves, she'd marvellous in that,I also loved her scene in The Amityville Horror, right up there with Veronica Cartwright for catatonic terror.
Huston the Dead is imo her best role.
Love the Sandy Dennis mention.
You're in for a treat with Eichorn in Cutter's Way
I prefer Avery also to Winfrey.
Some lovely work overlooked by Oscar and TFE
1981 Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez in Diva
1987 Carroll Baker in Ironweed
1988 Reizl Boyzk in Crossing Delancy
The women of Stardust Memories (Charlotte Rampling, Jessica Harper, Marie-Christine Barrault, Amy Wright).
And Allen, McDormand and Rossellini are all supporting.
I don't comment in this posts 'cause it's totally senseless to me.
A lot of women considered "Alternative Nominees", "Honorable Mentions", "Ineligible", "On the Watchlist". More than 20 names...
With all respect, but it's completely senseless to me.
Bring back the Supporting Actress Smackdown!
Lists are never senseless and for some of us seeing names we thought only we liked is fun, knowing you'd spotted something in a performance that you thought no-one else did,pre internet this was a niche subject you discuss with maybe nobody.
It's nice to see alternate and honorable mentions so lots of ladies get a shout out.
Every year there's numerous names and we always end up with the same 8 or so being mentioned,I think Claudio has put a lot of time and effort into this post and should be thanked.
We even got Nat back to partake in these discussions.
This is the only place I can visit to discuss my passions.
Bring on alternate male performances, that should be very interesting esp weak years like 1985.
Thank you all for your recommendations. They are all immensely appreciated.
Finbar McBride -- Shamefully, I must confess I forgot Baker, but you're right that she's amazing in IRONWEED. I never think about DIVA as a performance-driven film, though I remember being impressed by Fernandez. I haven't yet seen CROSSING DELANCEY.
some thoughts on mine at this writing but i haven't seen so many of these in such a long time (and I'm spotty on the earliest year of the 1980s) that my list is highly subject to change...so t i'm only listing three choices for the years...
1980
Eva La Gallienne, RESURRECTION (silver)
Mary Steenburgen, MELVIN AND HOWARD (gold)
Elizabeth Wilson, NINE TO FIVE (bronze)
1981
Jane Fonda, ON GOLDEN POND (bronze?)
Joan Hackett, ONLY WHEN I LAUGH (silver)
Maureen Stapleton, REDS (gold)
I think Karen Allen is a lead for Raiders... but if i decided supporting on a rewatch she'd bump Fonda
1982
Teri Garr, TOOTSIE (silver)
Lesley Ann Warren, VICTOR/VICTORIA (gold)
I need to rewatch a bunch from this year before deciding on my five. But I LOVE LOVE LOVE Daryl Hannah and Sean Young in Blade Runner so i want to shout them out since they're not the kind of roles that ever gets kudos.
1983
Sandra Bernhard, THE KING OF COMEDY (gold or silver)
Cher, SILKWOOD (bronze)
Michelle Pfeiffer, SCARFACE (gold or silver)
somehow i have never seen TRADING PLACES or CROSS CREEK but I have heard so many times that Jamie Lee Curtis and ALfre Woodard are terrific in them. For genre performances that never get recognition I remember absolutely loving Pam Grier in SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES as a kid but I have no idea if there's any meat to the character since I haven't seen it since then.
and of course Kathleen Turner is comic-fantastic in THE MAN WITH TWO BRAINS but Kathleen Turner could do no wrong in the first half of the 1980s.
1984
Christine Lathi, SWING SHIFT
Geraldine Page, THE POPE OF GREENWICH VILLAGE (though if my own awards had existed she'd be the gold medalist for Cameo or Limited Performance which would free up a slot here.
Lily Tomlin, ALL OF ME (maybe)
I kinda think Peggy Ashcroft is a lead in A PASSAGE TO INDIA.
1985
Sônia Braga, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (gold)
Mieko Harada, RAN (silver)
Tracey Ullman PLENTY (bronze)
The logical choice here are the oscar nominees from The Color Purple and/or the Oscar winner from Prizzi's Honor. But those are most definitely my medalists above. I like that you have laurie metcalf on your watchlist. She's hilarious in Desperately Seeking Susan. I'm also very curious to rewatch AFTER HOURS which has a lot of great actresses in the cast. I remember almost nothing about it.
shoutout to Demi Moore (St Elmo's Fire - her best performance outside of The Substance), and Madeline Kahn (Clue)
1986
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio THE COLOR OF MONEY
Maggie Smith, A ROOM WITH A VIEW
So many good supporting players in 1986 though I'm not exactly sure who else I'd choose without rewatches (you coudl basically fill up the category with A ROOM WITH A VIEW alone. But i want to shout out Jeanette Goldstein who is great in Aliens but again, like Daryl Hannah in '82, not the kind of genre that people think about when they think about acting (generally speaking). And i need to see WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS again because Forque, Lampreave, and Manver are all so fun in it but I'm not sure who I'd claim is MVP.
love the honorable mention for Kathy Kinney in PARTING GLANCES as its such a sneakily endearing performance.
from here on out, I'll choose five
1987
Kathy Baker, STREET SMART
Veronica Cartwright, THE WITCHES OF EASTWICK
Joan Chen, THE LAST EMPEROR
Olympia Dukakis, MOONSTRUCK
Carmen Maura, LAW OF DESIRE
with apologies to Norma Alejandro (Gaby) or Margaret Whitton (The Secret of My Success) or Anjelica Huston (the Dead) who I might choose on another day or if I had a more recent rewatch.
1988
Maria Barranca, WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN
Geneviève Bujold, DEAD RINGERS (but is she a lead. it's been a long time)
Lena Olin, THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING
Michelle Pfeiffer, DANGEROUS LIAISONS
Mercedes Reuhl, MARRIED TO THE MOB
a year with a truly gross abundance of worthy players. So apologies to Joan Cusack, Sigourney Weaver (working girl), Sonia Braga (moon over parador), Julieta Serrano (women on the verge) WInona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara (beetlejuice), Juliette Binoche (unbearable lightness), Carol Kane (scrooged) or Martha Plimpton (running on empty) who I would watch again in a split second to reconsider if someone said 'hey, let's watch __________
1989
Pat Carroll, THE LITTLE MERMAID (the only time i'd ever nominate a voice performance)
Bridget Fonda, SCANDAL
Laura San Giacomo, SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE
Lena Olin, ENEMIES, A LOVE STORY
Dianne Wiest, PARENTHOOD
with apologies to Kelly Lynch (Drugstore Cowboy - but is she a lead?)
I rewatched The Color Purple last year when, for a brief moment, I thought I was going to see the mediocre movie musical version. I was shocked to realize I actually preferred Margaret Avery to Oprah in the film! I thought her work was a lot more layered and interesting.
Nat,you are JLC fan and have never seen one of her best most celebrated turns, she's golden in Trading Places, let that be the one you watch with a friend or other half.
Bujold is supporting,Claire is a large role but the film is about the twins plain and simple.
Surprised to see no Fricker in your 89 supporting list.
Yes the to genius Cartwright in 87.
I never got Mary Liz in 86.
I would like to seea list of Demi Moore's Top 10 performances now that she has probably given her very best one in The Substance,Caludio would you be interested in doing that.
Pfeiifer was so snubbed for Scarface
Fun project. Some thoughts:
1980 - I'll always stump for Eileen Brennan in anything/any year. And Nathaniel, singling out Elizabeth Wilson is a brilliant call.
1981 - Karen Allen all the way if she's supporting (and I could go either way on that).
1982 - For me it's Garr over Warren, but they're both great. I love you mentioning Maggie Smith in Evil Under the Sun.
1983 - Hunt winning made sense to me, but maybe I need to watch that again. Otherwise, Pfeiffer.would be my winner with Bernhard a close second. I like Silkwood, but I've never seen what others see in Cher's performance in that.
1984 - Kind of an odd year where there seemed even less for actresses than usual, but I think Siân Phillips is a great call and I enjoy that much-maligned Dune so I'll go with that. Just to mention someone else, I'm showing my generation, but I very much enjoyed Haviland Morris in Sixteen Candles.
1985 - Huston and Harada are both basically perfect. And I love that you mentioned Frances Barber.
1986 - If Wiest didn't keep her Oscar (although I think she's great). Rossellini would probably get the nod from me. Smith is wonderful. I love you mentioning Kathy Kinney and Julie Christie. I remember enjoying Tess Harper but I haven't seen Crimes of the Heart in years.
1987 - Huston, Chen and Cartwright are all A-level - but Nathaniel mentioned Margaret Whitton and that performance is one of my favorite comedic performances of the '80s so maybe I'd pick her for the win that year. And I'd keep Anne Ramsey in the 5 - good performance and a lovely awards season story.
1988 - Mercedes Ruehl forever. Otherwise - Olin, Weaver, someone from Women on the Verge (probably Serrano but it's a deep cast) and maybe Swoosie Kurtz in Bright Lights Big City or Kristin Scott Thomas in Handful of Dust if she'd count as Supporting.
1989 - Huston (my winner), Olin, San Giacomo, MacLaine from Steel Magnolias, and Jennifer Tilly in Let It Ride (such a good movie). I also remember liking Wiest in Seidelman's Cookie but I haven't seen that in a long time. Actresses like Caroline Aaron and Joanna Gleason are very good in Crimes and Misdemeanors but those are tiny roles.
Thanks for this these posts and the positive memories.
