Alexa here.  After seeing Drive this past weekend I am now one of the legions of obsessives screaming about how cool it is all over the internet.  So, of course, I found myself on a search for some original poster designs for the film.  To me, its 80s stylings and rich atmosphere scream for visual homage (it even got Nathaniel sketching again!).  

Here are some recent designs I spotted.  I'm hoping to see more soon.

Curio: Cinematic Showdowns

Alexa here.  I know that Nathaniel linked to this some weeks back, but I felt the need to do a post on Great Showdowns too because I can't get enough.  In case you didn't catch it, Illustrator Scott Campbell's tumblr is a celebration of "the greatest moments of melee" in film history.  Lately he's given us some great, not-so-obvious entries I'm sharing below.  But really, you should just click follow yourself.

Curio: Custom Painted Film Stills

Alexa here with a bit of art for sale that Film Experience readers might find interesting. Artist Lara Duren likes to create custom paintings in order to, as she says, "keep the fragile light of inspiration from dying out." Her latest offering is a custom watercolor painting of a scene from your favorite film.  She charges $25 for a 5x7 and $50 for an 8x10. I like the sample images she's provided because they aren't entirely literal, screenshot-style paintings, and they have a nice dreamscape quality. So, if you are looking for a little frameable art that goes beyond the movie poster, and you want to help stir up Lara's muse, you can buy one here.

Curio: Woody's Women

Alexa here.  Matthew's question for today's Q&A ("Woody Allen has chosen a new, unexpected muse...Pick the actress") got me thinking about the special qualities of Woody's muses.  As noted in June's W, Woody surrounds himself (or his actor fascimilie) with fascinating, seductive, unnerving women. He told the magazine that "I have great adoration and lust and interest in all of the women in my films. It would thrill me to go out with all of them.”  Here are a few fan art celebrations of Woody with his dream dates.

Curio: Barton Fink, Portraits of the Artist

Alexa here. Michael's post on Barton Fink at 20, in conjunction with the recent Lebowski cast reunion, got me thinking about the effect of the cult status of each on movie-inspired art.  You can't browse tumblr without seeing a new Lebowski poster each week, but where is the Barton love from indie designers?  It seems ripe for visual interpretation, what with its stark visuals and, well, emphasis on wallpaper (something every graphic designer finds irresistible).  But maybe, as Michael noted, it's almost too elemental and abstract to cause a glut of fan creations à la Lebowski (with its marmot and toe and other what-have-yous). But I did a bit of digging and yes, the Barton love is out there. Here are some creations I particularly liked.
