Curio: A Guide to Talking Through a Beaver

Alexa here.   Hopefully this column does not find you in spiritual crisis akin to Mel Gibson's character in The Beaver. (Or, God forbid, Mel in real life.) But just in case, here are some beaver curios that may help you out of the morass.  Apparently, all you need to do is master a cockney accent and let the beaver do the talking.  All will be mended!

He may not be as animated as the one in the film, but you can buy our own handmade, felted beaver puppet, named Castor the Busy Canadian Beaver, here.

Or, let your finger (ahem) do the talking with this stoneware finger puppet.

Curio: Thor's Special Helmet

Alexa here.  I must admit I am more than a little intrigued to see Kenneth Branagh's take on Thor. I think his bombast is really suited to a superhero flick, especially one based in Norse mythology, with all the Wagnerian melodrama that implies. Chris Hemsworth certainly looks the part, although we'll see if he can top a bleached Vincent D'Onofrio in Adventures in Babysitting. With Vince in mind, here are some special helmets to transform you into a hero, just in time for Friday.

Sweet hand-knitted Thor helmets!  Buy 'em here and here.

Or, if you prefer to go full-throttle, for a cool $400 you can have this flaming Thor helmet

Curio: Celebrating 25 Years of Pixar at Planet-Pulp

Alexa here.  Planet-Pulp bills itself as an "Intergalactic Online gallery on a mission to orbit a pulp-culture theme every 30 days."  Last month they hosted a show of illustrations celebrating 25 years of Pixar (it looks to have spilled a bit into April, too).  I caught wind of it after Steve Dressler submitted a couple of wonderful illustrations, and I was soon thrilled to see that two of my favorite Pixar characters, Edna Mode and Colette Tatou, were part of the fun.  Here are some selections from the show.  You can catch all the pulpy fun here.

Violet by Brett Parson

Curio: Saint Werner

Alexa here.  I heard someone say once that Werner Herzog is as close as the cinema gets to a saint, and I agree. Of course there are the films (Aguirre, the Wrath of God, oy, the magic!), but there's also the exuberant man himself; he feels like a beacon in the middle of a wasteland sometimes.  Nathaniel's perfect festival wardrobe choice of a Herzog tee reminded me of this Herzog wearable I want for my birthday:

I imagine people would assume I'm wearing my grandfather or something, and I'd love to see the different reactions I'd get when I tell them it's an image of Herzog.  (I spied it Seacave's etsy shop; unfortunately he doesn't have any for sale right now, but he does have a sweet Bonnie and Clyde pendant necklace for the lawless out there.)

Recently I spotted this portrait embroidery of Werner, and knowing me, if I had $185 to burn I just might buy it.  You can find him at this etsy shop, along with Peter Sellers and Jean-Luc Godard.

Curio: Poster Designs by Matt Needle

Alexa here. Matt Needle is a freelance designer living in the UK with a knack for poster design. I've been following his work since last year, when I was on the lookout for cool indie posters for Inception.  Lately he's added so many new designs to his portfolio that I can barely keep up! Here are some highlights from his film poster collection; check out his flickr to see more, including some great music and television posters (and a very cool Don Draper).  All are available for purchase from his bigcartel shop.
