Soundtracking: "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"

Folks seem to be greeting this week’s “Dragon Tattoo story” The Girl in the Spider’s Web with “that again” eyerolls, like something we’ve moved on from. But David Fincher’s American kickoff birthed its own now tired pop culture artifact when it revamped Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” to christen its grungy tale of abused women and lurking fascism. The band had once been largely cagey about use of their music for repurposing, even signature tracks such as this, but now you can easily find it at play in superhero movies and commercials.

None of them however touch the singularity of Fincher’s grim vision as he used it in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo...

Soundtracking: "Her"

Say what you will about its hipster, ukulele verve, but “The Moon Song” from Her is one of the most deserving Best Original Song nominees of the past decade. Some of the reward may be carryover from songwriter Karen O missing out for Where The Wild Things Are’s equally deserving “All is Love”, but both prove essential to the emotional experience of their films. Seriously, Karen O, please make more music for films and not just those from Spike Jonze.

This song is a deceptively simple ditty, a longing love song that slips into the deep melancholy and faint whimsy of the near-future that Jonze creates in the film. It belongs to Her’s manic pixie dream AI Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson), but also the romantic imagination of Joaquin Pheonix’s Theodore. Every couple needs a song, even if one of the parties is solely digital.

Re: This Regurgitated Weekend
Dave Holmes at Vulture wisely (and with great humor) looks back at the box office of 1987 the weekend the original Robocop debuted. I bring this up because this weekend's wide releases are ALL THREE OF THEM 80'S REMAKES: About Last Night (1986), Robocop (1987), and Endless Love (1981). (Has this ever happened before? Probably but if it has please to remind me)  

The piece is really funny and also has one of the best lines ever uttered about The Witches of Eastwick:

Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer — the closest thing to an all-Beyoncé Destiny’s Child we’re ever going to get...

Readers of a certain age already know and love the awesome 80s bad Berlin (so many classics like "The Metro" "Masquerade" "No More Words") but younger movie-mad readers should also familiarize. For somewhat obvious reasons it's oft-forgotten that Terri Nunn, the lead singer was an actress before joining Berlin and was in the running for Princess Leia before George Lucas decided on Carrie Fisher! Berlin's biggest hit was the Oscar-winning Best Original Song "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun... but they didn't write it so no Oscars for them. Anyway, they have a new record coming out called "Animal" and the lead single's video co-stars my personal favorite RuPaul's Drag Race diva, Raven. Raven loves the 80s -- remember her "I was giving Michelle Pfeiffer Bitch" on the show? She's a perfect fit to face off with Terri! 

Oscar's Songwriters Have a Difficult Task in 2013

Glenn here and it's the weekend, which means there is no better time to discuss Oscar's original song category (er, right?). Much like that other much-maligned category, animated feature, The Academy's songwriting branch somehow need to come up with five nominees even if there aren't enough worthy contenders. Last year's introduction of a guaranteed five nominees produced "Academy Award Nominee Ted!", although it did allow for the beautiful song from Chasing Ice (performed by ScarJo!) to come to our attention so maybe it's not such a bad thing after all? I strongly believe that this is their penance for not nominating "You Haven't Seen the Last of Me" from Burlesque a few years back. Diane Warren's music branch voodoo doll works in mysterious ways, folks.

At least one song we can all be pretty confident about is "Let It Go" from Disney's Frozen. Apparently the studio will only be submitting this one song from the film despite a wide roster of contenders. They're going for the win it would seem and, at least at this stage, unless reception to the film isn't particularly positive it's probably the best bet for the win based purely on history. The video below isn't the best, but it's all we've got at the moment that isn't a Demi Lovato pop version.

David Lynch "Sings"

You can't help but respect any director who ends up getting his own adjective but David Lynch's next move could give whole new meaning to "Lynchian"... especially since he doesn't appear to be making movies anymore.

The iconoclast cheese and transcendental meditation loving auteur apparently also loves electro pop. He's recorded an album featuring the vocals of Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on at least one song. Is she the official songstress of choice for crazy-ass auteurs now that Spike Jonze and Lynch have both latched on? Lynch's album "Crazy Clown Time" is due in early November.

I consider it really bad form that David Lynch cannot be bothered to even direct his own video! (That was left up to contest entries and here's the winner.) I mean the least Lynch could have down if he isn't making another INLAND EMPIRE or Mulholland Drive is to make a strang music video wherein Laura Dern dances around him pulling faces that will haunt us all forever. That's the least he could do. Has he abandoned image-making altogether?

The first song "Good Day Today" does sound like David Lynch's voice ...if it emanated from places that could not accurately be described as lungs and larynx, that is. For maximum kitsch value I really wish he'd have thought to do a vocoder duet with Cher.  Here's an old interview with Pitchfork about the record.
