Drag Race RuCap: "Grand Finale"

CLÁUDIO ALVES: It’s over. RuPaul’s Drag Race has finished its fifteenth season, crowning one of its best winners yet while putting on a show full of musical interludes, political messaging, and gorgeous gowns. Though the excitement of lipsync tournaments à la season 9 is somewhat missed, the queens seem happy with a repeat of the season 14 format, where each finalist presents a solo number before Ru picks a top two to lipsync for the crown. Anyway, that’s a matter for later. First, dear Nick, tell me your general thoughts on the finale...

Doc Corner: Little Richard and Brooke Shields

By Glenn Charlie Dunks

Little Richard and Brooke Shields are not exactly two people I would expect to pair together. They are both icons, sure; albeit for very different reasons. Little Richard (aka Richard Wayne Penniman) is a musical legend whose flamboyant style as a singer and as an entertainer was matched only by the talent of his songwriting and his singing. Shields, on the other hand, was labelled the beauty of a generation and whose zeitgeisty cultural footprint dovetails into a variety of societal taboos that cast a long shadow over the entertainment.

Michelle Yeoh Kicks Ass

by Cláudio Alves

And yet, even watching the thespian's clear emotion when accepting the statuette, the full context of the win eluded me. Prior to this victory, Yeoh was a familiar face from various Hollywood projects and, of course, the masterpiece that is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. However, to my great shame, her Hong Kong action career remained undiscovered.

Taking cues from the Criterion Channel's "Michelle Yeoh Kicks Ass" collection, I celebrated the one-month anniversary of her historical Oscar win by getting to know another side of our reigning Best Actress champion. It was an eye-opening experience…

TCM Film Festival: Day Three - Bogey in Africa and Musicals Galore

Christopher James continues his coverage of the 2023 TCM Film Festival. Check in for daily...

If the first two days of the TCM festival were dominated by bad boys fighting the establishment, day 3 was all about the movie musical. Out of the four films I screened today, three were musicals from different eras. It was a fantastic example of the breadth and depth the genre has to offer.

Today was also the day of big stars. For the first screening, Shari Belafonte had a discussion with TCM host and Academy Museum programmer Jacqueline Stewart. Later on in the  same room, Ann-Margret arrived and blew out a birthday cake inspired by her legs. Then, right before a screening of Carmen Jones, legendary film historian Donald Bogle was awarded the Robert Osborne award for achievement in classic film preservation...
