Red Carpet BFCA

Tonight the Golden Globes come and wash all memories of previous precursors away leaving basically only Oscar butterflies and mounting campaigns in their wake. So before they arrive, one last look back at the BFCA "Critics Choice" by way of the red carpet. I was wrong about the fuchsia being the color story -- the NBR threw me off -- as it seems like this year is going to be sedate with creams, whites and blackzzzz. But perhaps someone will go all bold red or crazy rainbow or something tonight at the Globes.

Comment Questions for y'all

  1. Do you think Jennifer Lawrence is pissed that Mila Kunis and Hailee Steinfeld stole all her Hot New Must Have Actress buzz as precursor season revved up? I'd still be surprised if she was snubbed in Best Actress but not as surprised as I would have been.
  2. Don't you think Mila is just biding her time till the Oscars. Obviously she has it in her to steal the show so why not steal the red carpet? We're waiting...
  3. Elle Fanning's look: 70s Granny Ice Skater? I'm confused.
  4. Best Dressed Here: Jennifer, Mila, Elle Fanning or Hailee?

God, Amazon, Freakshow, Belle of the BallMore blacks and whites.  More questions!

  1. Does anyone look better in a plunging neckline than Julianne Moore? She's been favoring that look (on occassion) since the 90s and it still looks sensational on her.
  2. Is Tilda Swinton's look an homage to Mildred Pierce or just plain ol' 'it's the Critics Choice I can't be bothered. Here, this unironic 80s look will do' (?)
  3. Helena's purse: Hilarious, Obnoxious or 'The Rest of My Look Is Fairly Sedate For Me (For Me) And I Want You To Remember That This is Helena Bonham Carter You're Looking At!'?
  4. How far along is Natalie Portman? We assumed it was earlybut she's already wearing flowing no-waist gowns and plump cheeks .

Her Majesty, Best of His Generation, Julia & Amy

We end with a random assortment about which we have no questions other than this: Isn't it disappointing that nobody has time to talk about how amazing Ryan Gosling is in Blue Valentine? There's only so many celebrities that can get omgtheirperformancechangedmylifeiwanttohavetheirbabieswhooooooo type praise each year, but he definitely should have been one of them, don't you think?

The Bening is luminous.

I just saw Blue Valentine yesterday and yes, if there’s any justice Gosling and Williams must be nominated for an Oscar for each wonderful performance. I think he’s so good at playing and being old in the character that sometimes it shocks me to see how young he actually is and how dapper he dresses up.

Best dress among those four is Hailee Steinfeld, but actually the best dress young lady that night was Emmas Stone, didn’t you see it?

What is that Tilda Swinton wearing? What’s up with the shoulder?

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMikhael

Mikhael -- well it's the extreme 40s shoulder pad... it's almost a Blade Runner homage maybe? which was itself 40s retro. I saw Emma but couldn't find a good photo.

also Hailee's hair is really long. No wonder the pigtails.

William -- that she is.

Best dressed goes to Hailee, who I've been thinking is inching ever closer to making it into the Best Actress top 5. Silver medal to J. Lawr, who, yes is no longer It Girl #1, but shame on you for suggesting a snub!

I didn't even know Tilda was there. Her outre look is actually most appropriate, considering the producers turned this year's show into MTV Movie Awards Jr., with enough garish lights, flashing screens, epileptic montage-reel graphics and blaring pop tracks to even make a 12-year-old dizzy. Relax, folks, it's just the freaking Critic's Choice Awards.

I love that both Annette and Julianne rocked dresses with plunging necklines, each with a different sort of "showiness."

Though neither made my acting shortlists, if we're thinking in Oscar terms, both Ryan and Michelle should ABSOLUTELY net nominations. Neither has ever been better, and that's saying a whole hell of a lot.

It freaks me out a little, looking at the pictures of Elle Fanning and Hailee Steinfeld. They both look older than me and I'm 20. I love HAilee's dress, but Jennifer Lawrence's fit her oh so well.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBroooooke

best dressed if for sure hailee.
about ryan gosling, it seriously stings. how did he get no attention for that performance? it's much better in my books than any other male lead this year.
but the academy never likes male romantic leads, so we kinda should have seen that coming.
but then again, it's not really a "romantic" role as much as it is a heartbreaker.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmir

Amir -- right. I always forget that too. Or at least I forget it when it's a movie i love. How can you watch that movie and not thinking RYAN GOSLING - BEST ACTOR NOMINEE! although I guess i never expected Blue Valentine to come this far. I remember poopoohing the idea that either would be nominated very early on. But since it did come this far it seems insane that he's going to miss out. Boo!

Brooooke -- HOLLYWOOD AGES YOU!

Her Majesty should have been at the top of this post. Stunning woman, stunning look - and she's wearing eyeglasses, bless her! And still looks that stunning!

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

I thought Emma Stone out-dressed all of these ladies--but I am still missing her red hair :(
Speaking of hair, I think Hailee needs to chop about a foot off of hers. haha.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBK

BK -- maybe she wants the lead role in PIPPI LONGSTOCKING (i'd save that joke for tonight but i doubt she'll be there as TRUE GRIT was shunned.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

Jennifer Lawrence's gown is my favorite-- not Oscar-formal, but unlike the others it doesn't look like just another Friday night. I also liked Bening and Gosling's attire.

As for the Globes, it seems like if anyone was going to get a boost from the Globes (at least one that would help in securing a nomination), it would be the Blue Valentine duo. But then again, voting for nominations is already complete (right?) so that boost would only come if they managed to squeak into the Oscar five.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

Although Hailee annoys me, she's def. the best dressed out of those four. She knows how to dress.

And oh Ryan Gosling...what a sexy man. And what a talent.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

I thought Tilda looked fabulous!

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHayden

Jennifer had a lot more personality than previously thought when she presented with Jon Hamm. But frankly, she seems very haughty and annoyed in most of her interviews...this may have been one reason why someone like Mila has surpassed her--that girl is always on and very sharp.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBia

Sorry, what are we talking about? That picture of Ryan Gosling is distractingly HOT! So much sexier and talented than the other Canadian Ryan....lol

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarshall1

If Ryan Gosling or Michelle Williams are not nominated this year, it will be one of the bigger snubs ever. I recognize there were a lot of great performances this year but Ryan and Michelle's, at least for me, deliver either the best or second-best and the fact that they're hovering #5-#7 for the Oscar shortlist frustrates me to no end.

Hailee Steinfeld was absolutely charming. Still think she'll get nominated in Supporting, but she definitely stole Lawrence's thunder this year. Oh, she's also Best Dressed by far. How is she SO young?

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Marshal -- there's another Canadian Ryan?

Evan -- i love Lawrence's gown too. Simple but shiny. me like shiny pretty things.

Ryan -- if they had gotten that movie out by October maybe it'd be a done deal now? they would have sunk in as frontrunners or maybe not. as stated romantic dramas are tough sells for Best Actor nominations. stupid but true.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

I absolutely adore Mila's SHOES! And the fact that Ryan Gosling is perhaps getting ready to steal Julianne Moore's trademark of "plunging neckline."

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMichael

Gosling does give a sensational, dramatically moving performance in Blue
Valentine, and I am happy to see praise here for it. His contrast between his younger character and his older character is so distinct, yet you always know he is the same person. His eyes say so much, particularly in the scene where Michelle Williams is telling him about seeing her ex-lover in the supermarket. Just the way he looks to her, you suddenly learn so much about her ex-lover even without knowing much about that character.

Williams is not up to Gosling's level, but I think she deserves an Oscar nod (I won't be mad if she doesn't get one though). For me, her performance builds as the film progresses. Her best scene is the wedding, IMO. She really makes you feel like this is such a profound moment for her, and her joy is so palpable.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMatthewRusk

As a Portman partisan this year, can I just say that Bening looked STUNNING in that dress. I still love her, I just don't think this is her year.

I really think Hailee may show up as Best Actress nominee #5.

And I think it's either both Ryan and Michelle (in which case, Robert Duvall and Hailee will miss out) or neither (more likely).

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAdam Keller

Matthew - that's so true at the differentiation. And yet it's all of a piece. He's really an amazingly detailed actor. I've read some complaints that it feels too performative but I think he's playing an extrovert character so I don't really see it asa a misstep so much as just how he chose to play it.

any way i LOVE his performance.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

haha, Nat, Ryan Reynolds.....sexiest man of 2010.....
to me, Gosling's talent and commitment alone far surpass Reynold's abs

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarshall1

4.How far along is Natalie Portman? We assumed it was early but she's already wearing flowing no-waist gowns and plump cheeks .

I love you man. I am glad I found your site .LOL I thought I was the only one who thought so. I have 3 kids. Usually we don't show any baby bump until between 4-6 months. I think the only and only reason why she's wearing those dresses is to get more votes. "Look, I am Pregnant. Vote for me". Honestly, after the weird globe speech, she's starting to annoys the crap of outta me with her mega overrate performance.

January 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChand

Oh...Williams, Gosling and Blue Valentine crew don't stand a chance. They are so out of the league. Not many critics alike support them, they barely get nominations. It sad but true, for me, if you got the mega buzzzzzzzz, it helps to win awards.
