I know people love Madonna, but ... I'm skeptical. I'm so afraid her movie will be competently made (i.e. the camera stays upright) and people will fall all over themselves to praise it b/c it's not the worst thing they've ever seen.
If you'd hear ScarJo's Tom Waitt cover album, you wouldn't think it's a good idea.

Nat, Choose Me sounded interesting so I looked it up and it's on Netflix Instant! No way I'm making that screening tonight but it's good to know it's readily available for my hermity ass. ;)
If I understand this Green Lantern article correctly, blockbuster films are essentially just one piece of a larger merchandising picture, and the quality of the film no longer matters so much as audience recognition of the brand. Therefore, sequels to shit movies can be greenlighted just because the audience says "hey, I recognize Ryan Reynolds as the Green Lantern!"
So basically Hollywood has become a living Family Guy joke: don't take the time to formulate something genuinely interesting, just make a reference because, as we all know, it's funny (interesting) because it exists.
Meanwhile, I'll be in the arthouse, where movies are still made for passion, not necessarily for profits, and look forward to those few quality studio films that don't aim to become megafranchises.

I'm looking at my top ten of 2010 (still VERY incomplete). Even with Toy Story 3 on the list, I'm pretty sure the combined budget of then is less than what they spent on the Green Lantern. At least with Cars 2, I can imagine Pixar doing something awesome with that 1 billion dollar revenue stream (which floored me).
I haven't been inside a multiplex this year (my arthouse theatre rocks, but is only a two screener) and I really don't see that changing until the film festival barges in.
I would give my left arm to see Shirley Maclaine with another role as delicious as Doris Vane. People always seem to forget what a marvelous actress she is. I mean, that has to be the only explanation, otherwise how could her snub in 1990 be humanly possible? And while I love Elizabeth Taylor as if she were a part of my family, it is a crime of biblical proportions that Shirley didn't take the Best Actress Oscar home in 1960 for The Apartment.
I am not ashamed to say W.E. is the film I'm most intrigued by this year. I can't help but root for Madonna. But there will be people out there eager to pounce on the film just for having her name attached. She's made some bad acting choices, true. But I happen to think she's had some good roles as well. Evita, Dangerous Game, Desp Seeking Susan, even Bloodhounds of Brioadway. Aside from her films, though, her true crime to many seems to be her success and her unwillingness to apologize for anything that brought that success.
Eric -- agreed. I think she's good in all of those films you name-checked too. Plus A League of Their Own.
TB -- i wouldn't give an arm, but i'd definitely give like my earlobe or something for the same thing ;) It needs to happen.
I didn't watch 'The Green Lantern' honestly, because of the reviews. My husband is an expert on movies (not bragging! lol!), when I asked him if he would wanna watch the movie with me, he refused to. :-(
