Oscar Morning Jitters and Madness

7:50 Good morning! I woke up with a start. In my dream, which we'll call a nightmare, it was 12:59 PM and I had completely forgotten about the Oscar nominations at 8:30ish and I was already HOURS behind. Bless the clock for talking me down. It was only 6:59 AM. All was well... for the moment.

Things I'm dying to find out: 1) What Supporting Actor will look like since it seems ripe for upheaval. 2) Which of the six Supporting Actresses with major awards traction will be left on the cutting room floor. 3) Whether The Artist or Hugo will lead the nomination count. 4) Whether The Descendants will follow in Previous Payne footsteps and miss some key expected nomination. 5) Whether The Girl With the Fincher Tattoo is really the big deal the guilds positioned it to be. 6) Everything.

You?

8:06 The radio just said "The Artist, Descendants and War Horse are expected to be nominated". Ummmm. I'm not sure Joey the horse is "expected" at this point. And leading with that film? NPR needs help.

8:14 I actually did yoga right when I woke up this morning. That's how much I'm seeking a zen place as this madness begins. Namaste. Etcetera.

8:34 The live comments on this feed from YouTube are crazed. It's all HARRY POTTER for the win. Poor muggles. They'll be so sad in a few minutes.

8:38 THE MUSIC. HERE WE GO. Bring on Jennifer Lawrence, Tom Sherak.

8:45 Holy crap. So many surprises and 9 best picture nominees. I'll update as fast as I can.

Was anyone else thinking Dragon Tattoo was about to get a Picture nod?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBrianZ

Arianne Phillips got in for WE!!!! great job!

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterKD

Tilda snubbed again?? WTF... And I'm surprised that Mara showed up, because no love for the director oder the movie.

9 noms for Best picture. And well done. Quite the suspense. Tree of Life? uuuh, and Malick too. That should secure Lubezki the Oscar!!! And War Horse pretty strong despite the no showing in director. And ELAIC. Defenitely due to the new voting system.

Best Actor also very unexpected, though very nice for Gary Oldman. Very disappointed that Fassbender got snubbed.

Overall surprising. Not in a very good way, not very bad either, i guess.

I am over the moon that Kung Fu Panda 2 is in for Animated Feature. I really loved that film. It was very beautifully done with great action and a strong storyline. People wouldn't complain about sequel fatigue if more sequels took huge risks like Kung Fu Panda 2 took. Same characters, evolved and explored in a very compelling new way.

What was the order in which the BP nominations were read? Vote count?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJ.P.

never mind, found it! :)

I'll second Anna's question - Where can we find the complete list? (At the AMPAS site? If they're as slow to update their site as they are everything else, I doubt it.)

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

@Nina, right! How nice to get some different animated features than the usual Hollywood films.

Nat did you just update very fast or did you get 5/5 in Best Supporting Actress?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

Janice, AMPAS site. They were up as soon as the last Best Picture nominee was announced.

You don't have to choose a category btw, just scroll down.

There have been worse nominees in Oscar history than Jonah Hill , he is solid in the film and the nomination is for the particular performance I don't see the problem with him getting in. I would rather had Rose Byrne over McCarthy from Bridesmaids but that was just a pipe dream

Actor--I feel like someone kicked me in the gut when Fassy missed out. You were unfortunately right Nathaniel...the category feels so...naked without him! Haha, but seriously that was a disgusting snub. Happy Leo was snubbed and that Oldman made it, but why oh why was Shame left out.

Actress--WHERE IS TILDA!? I thought for sure she was going to make it. I guess Glenn putting on prosthetics and acting weird was more worthy. Seriously, the Academy hates Tilda or at least her films. Three snubs in a row is not ok with me.

Supporting Actor--It's a crime they ignored Brooks but I saw that coming. Was NOT expecting their outright hatred to Drive and anything cool.

Supporting Actress--very predictable but was hoping Mulligan could squeak in but obviously they hated Drive.

How did Rooney make it and not the film for pic or director? Something about that feels weird. Why do they still have a hard-on for Daldry? Did anyone shit themselves when War Horse was called first? Do you think it's telling that The Help missed on Adapted Screenplay when it was considered a shoo-in? Am I going to have to send Kevin and his bow and arrows to members of the Academy for failing to nominate Tilda yet again???

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Why was Jessica Chastain's picture from The Tree of Life?!! She was nominated for The Help right?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChrisD

I'm still kinda pissed about Kirsten Dunst not winning a nom. Seriously... people must have just not watched their screeners.

Fincher's fanboys' heads are probably exploding right now. Mass suicide on the way.

I wonder how Noomi Rapace feels about it- she created the role less than two years ago.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Chris D I noticed that too.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Thanks for the links, everyone. Terence's is the one that worked for me.

I'm sure the Harry Potter fans are not happy right now?

"War Horse" Best Picture? Prettiest picture, sure. 'twas to be expected, I guess.

Glad to see Michael O'Conner get a nod for Costume (Jane Eyre).

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJanice

One pleasant surprise: Of the two nominations, my favorite song from The Muppets was nominated! But I still hurt from the Song branch for not nominating Diane Warren last year. I need my Cher.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterfbh

What is the song branch doing? I know there wasn't a plethora of songs to choose from but 2 nominees? What about "Living Proof" from The Help or "Star Spangled Man" from Captain America????

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterTerence

And to add to comments on Best Song -- so glad Glenn wasn't nominated. I think it would have been heartbreaking to see her win her first, pity Oscar for something other than acting.

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterfbh

I hate the new Best Original Song rules. So many songs are left out (The Wrestler, anyone?). And with only two nominations why bother having any?

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterajnrules

Looks like someone forgot to tell Jennifer Lawrence to take off her bib from breakfast before going out to announce the nominees...

January 24, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

@Janice, let's be real... it's been a while since there was a true great song nominated. Disney classics days are much missed...

As for Tilda Swinton, I believe her next nomination will come only when she's in a stronger, more publicized movie. Preferrably, a Best Picture nominee, like before. On the bright side, it's a good thing she already is an Academy Award Winner.

The Good…
