Red Carpet Lineup: Cannes 2012
Jose here.
We know you'd been craving more Cannes coverage so we're bringing you a quick look at the red carpet highlights. Before we dive into the awesome world of dresses and leading ladies, let's all admire the beautiful Kylie Minogue who shone at the premiere of Holy Motors, the new film by Leos Carax that's being touted as a hybrid between David Lynch and a joke.
Kylie plays the leading roles (yes, she plays two characters) opposite the extraordinary Denis Lavant and their film has been getting such ecstatic notices that now people assume it's going to be the big winner. Can you imagine a pop superstar headlining another Palme d'Or winner?
Before I let my mind wander off to random places like Kylie playing Grace on the third US of A installment for Lars, let's see what the ladies have been wearing to the movie premieres...
First up we have the fabulous Rossy de Palma stealing the spotlight in a ruffled design reminiscent of what Nicole Kidman wore to the 2002 Oscars, next to her is Lea Mic Freida Pinto in a stunning Michael Angel gown attending the premiere of Moonrise Kingdom and when you come to think about it, those colors do scream Wes Anderson, no?
Next up, Marion Cotillard is in Dior (what else?) and next to her is the astonishing Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann. Speaking of the almighty Tilda, are you all following her on Twitter? Thinking of her fabulous dresses immediately reminded me of this tweet:
(Whoever created the @NotTildaSwinton account should get an Oscar or a clone of Tilda's)
We all agree that Asia Argento is a much more fascinating celebrity than she is an actress, right? She looks positively sinful in Givenchy Couture as she attends the premiere of her dad's Dracula 3D. Next to her is mia Wasikowska in a plum J. Mendel and then we have the lovely Emmanuelle Devos who was there to support her former director Jacques Audiard. Have you seen her in Read my Lips? If not, go get it right away! Devos hasn't been in a movie since 2009! Maybe she's like Tinkerbell and needs applause to live...
Last but not least we have Naomi Watts looking at her ALL.TIME.BEST in a majestic Marchesa gown. The fact that she pulled off feathers and tulle isn't as remarkable as the fact that she actually did her hair properly and isn't trying too hard with the accessories.
Jane vs. Diane
Now, before we're done with the red carpet, we have to have ourselves a poll, right? This time we're torn between the sexiest septuagenarian in the world and the undisputed reigning queen of fashion (who also happens to be a Cannes' jury member this year)
Jane Fonda in (from L to R) Roberto Cavalli, Stella McCartney and Atelier Versace.
Diane Kruger in (from L to R) Vivienne Westwood, Jason Wu and Giambattista Valli.
Which of these ladies is your favorite? Is Jane Fonda truly the sexiest senior citizen on earth or are we doing Helen Mirren a disservice? What's your favorite performance by a pop superstar?
Reader Comments (12)
1) Tilda, Mia, Marion. In this order
2) Yes, we're doing a disservice. She's Susan Sarandon.
3) Madonna in Snake Eyes.
Just to clarify, Emmanuelle Devos wasn't there to support Audiard specifically, but because she's a member of the Jury. Also, she has actually appeared in 3 movies since 2009 (she had 6 movies in theaters in France in 2009 and won a Cesar Award that same year, so maybe she needed a bit of rest...)
Oh, and Jane Fonda is 74 so she's no sexagenarian :-)
and when you come to think about it, those colors do scream Wes Anderson, no?
no.
Julien - Color me even more impressed with Jane! I could've sworn I read she was 64 not 74. I need new glasses :(
Ha - I posted about the Tilda Swinton parody twitter in the twins thread just before I read this! I guess everyone is talking about it. For me, Tilda is always the best dressed, but I liked Bill Murray's clashing plaids, too.
Jose,
what is your reference to Kylie playing Grace in the third installment of USofA for Lars?
I don't know what this means.
Thanks.
Mark - "The US of A" is a trilogy by Lars von Trier. So far, he's only made two chapters "Dogville" and "Manderlay". He was supposed to shoot the third one about 6 years ago, but never did. The trilogy's heroine is named Grace and she's been played by different actresses in the installments, so if he continues this tradition I was just saying it would be fascinating if he cast someone like Kylie, considering he had Bjork star in "Dancer in the Dark".
I LOVE MARION. phew.
Top three: Tilda, Jane Fonda in everything, Naomi Watts.
Also, that @NotTildaSwinton account is free of flaws.
Kylie! How awesome would it be if she was indeed really great in that bizarre movie? Have a newfound second career as a serious actress.
Of the first two rows of picks I don't care for any of them, EXCEPT for Naomi, who looks lovely, even if the dress is a tad fussy. And Kyle looks fantastic, and she's one of those few divas who can carry off that much gold. (Not even Madonna could handle that dress IMO.)
The color looks ok on Mia but - a plunging neckline on a woman who has the body of a 9 yr old boy? That dress needs someone who can rock the curves. It looks like it's hanging off her. And Rossi looks like she's been stuffed in a sausage casing. I think if they traded it would have been much better for the both of them.
And Nicole at Cannes?
