You Must Be My Linky Star

In Contention goodbye to the goodcity. In Contention's head honcho leaves NYC for LA. He tried it for a year. (I'd kind of like to do this in reverse as I could never leave NYC for good.)

How Did You Celebrate Madonna's Birthday Yesterday?
I listed my opinion of her best "acting" and I listened to a million songs by the queen. I also read a few blogposts celebrating her special day my favorite of which by far was this one at Flavorwire which stereotypes you by your favorite Madonna song.

I went straight to my two favorites...

“Like a Prayer”
Potentially lapsed Catholics.
“Erotica”
People who have the “vintage” tab on RedTube bookmarked in their browser.

...which just made me cackle and those aren't even the funniest ones. I especially LOL'ed at  "La Isla Bonita," "Who's That Girl" and "Express Yourself." It's a must read if you love Her Madgesty.

Finally...
Why don't you vote in more of our polls? I see the stats. There are way more of you than are voting in the polls! Insert Gentle Grumbling At You! Rather than polling you about why you're not joining in on the fun (perhaps your fingertips are too sensitive for clicking?) I'll just remind you that we have polls running like these...

Truth or Dare first?!!! Well, the Evian bottle scene would have a great Oscar clip indeed.

I vote in all your polls. More than once actually.

The Madonna song stereotypes are great, but I'm wondering what the explanation for "I'll Remember" would be.

I was on a film-triivia contest TV show on IFC back in the '00s, and one of my theses was that "anyone can name bad Madonna performances; I can name six movies where she's actually pretty good." (Or, in the case of "Evita," almost shockingly good--especially the last half hour, where her performance takes on starting vulnerability and poignancy.) Thus, the six: "Desperately Seeking Susan" "Evita" "Truth Or Dare" (yes, a lot of it is still "her"--but a huge chunk of it is about performing and holding the camera), "Dick Tracy" "A League Of Their Own" and--a sadly neglected performance--her turn in "Bloodhounds of Broadway," in which she's never been more playful. Her duet with Jennifer Grey (!) on "I Surrender, Dear" (available on YouTube) is a sublime little jazz age gem--at one point, she offers Grey a reassuring little wink, and then quick as light returns to the performance; it's like watching a classic flapper goddess in action. (And the lower register of her voice as heard in the song is a revelation, like when she did "Sooner Or Later" on the Oscars, and she'd use it more and more over the next 25 years when singing.)

And if you want to see Madonna at her most completely unguarded and funny--she's actually completely immersed in a character--go back and find the "Coffee Talk" sketch from "SNL" with Mike Meyers as Linda Richman and Roseanne (and a Streisand cameo at the end). Madonna clearly knows exactly who this woman is, right down to rubbing lipstick off of her teeth at one point. (Based on this and "Beautiful Stranger" and the bit with Wayne and Garth parodying "Justify My Love," one could argue that Mike Meyers brings out the very best in Madonna. Who knew?)

I've always understood Madonna as a hugely successful and important pop icon/female empowerment figure, etc etc. But not until recently did I become a huge fan and understand how brilliant she is. Of course I always loved her hugely popular singles and stuff, but I recently downloaded Ray of Light and it's one of my most favorite albums ever. Confessions on a Dance Floor is genius too. I really hope her next album is brill cuz these last few albums are NOT cutting it.

My favorite Madonna songs...

Frozen
The Power of Good-Bye
Ray of Light
Nothing Really Matters
Little Star
(Pretty much the entire Ray of Light album)
Papa Don't Preach
Take a Bow
Like a Prayer
Borderline
I might add Into the Groove too, but most of her singles are awesome soo

Recently I saw "Grease 2" and I had forgotten how terrible it is- but it made me wonder why Maxwell Caufield did not become a star?

August 17, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

I vote in most of the polls.

Erotica.

Poor Maxwell. Might have something to do with marrying a MUCH older woman. They even killed his character off Emerdale.
