GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATIONS

No, Paula Patton did not become a Hollywood Foreign Press Associate. But she was helping with the nominations in the wee hours. The complete list of nominations with some commentary (more to come in additional posts) is after the jump...

Best Picture, Drama
"Boyhood"
"Foxcatcher"
"The Imitation Game"
"Selma"
"The Theory of Everything"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Foxcatcher, which needed the attention since its chilly and its long running buzz is much quieter than in the summer
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: Unbroken, which seemed right up the Globes alley and was completely shut out. The late screening releases this year seemed to have had some trouble -- especially with SAG

Best Picture, Comedy Or Musical
"Birdman"
"The Grand Budapest Hotel"
"Into the Woods"
"Pride"
"St. Vincent"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Fans of Pride (like myself) who wished and wished this day would come but didnt' quite believe that it would.
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: Fans of Begin Again (like myself) who assumed this day would NOT come and are non too pleased about its exclusion.

Best Actress, Motion Picture - Drama
Jennifer Aniston, "Cake"
Felicity Jones, "The Theory of Everything"
Julianne Moore, "Still Alice"
Rosamund Pike, "Gone Girl"
Reese Witherspoon, "Wild"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Jennifer Aniston who wants that fifth Best Actress spot bad and nature abhors a vacuum (and there just wasn't a lot of strong enough campaigning early enough for the longshots) so she might get it.
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: Marion Cotillard who just about every sane person agrees has become of the best screen actors on the entire planet over the past several years but can't even catch a break at Cannes ferchrissakes for winning stuff.

Best Actor, Motion Picture - Drama
Steve Carell, "Foxcatcher"
Benedict Cumberbatch, "Imitation Game"
Jake Gyllenhaal, "Nightcrawler"
David Oyelowo, "Selma"
Eddie Redmayne, "The Theory of Everything"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Oyelowo whose Q rating is lower than the others which is sometimes a problem for Globe nominations
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) and Chadwick Boseman who had to get this since they didn't get SAG nods
IT DOESN'T MATTER FOR: Timothy Spall (Mr Turner) who was not likely here to begin with (glamour star Globe necessity quotient)

Best Actress, Motion Picture - Comedy Or Musical
Amy Adams, "Big Eyes"
Emily Blunt, "Into the Woods"
Hellen Mirren, "The Hundred-Foot Journey"
Julianne Moore, "Map to the Stars"
Quvenzhane Wallis - "Annie"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: no one in particular. None of these stars needed this. But it's fun to see Julianne double nominated for two such rich and very different performances.
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: Keira Knightley in Begin Again who so deserved a spot here and Jenny Slate in Obvious Child who a lot of people thought might make it.

Best Actor, Motion Picture - Comedy Or Musical
Ralph Fiennes, "The Grand Budapest Hotel"
Michael Keaton, "Birdman"
Bill Murray, "St. Vincent"
Joaquin Phoenix, "Inherent Vice"
Christoph Waltz, "Big Eyes"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Ralph Fiennes who was probably a shoo in here but still needed the attention. Or at least the film did.
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: lovers of good acting since, well... each year i have to funnel my awards anger into one or two places so congrats Christoph Waltz, you win!

Best Supporting Actress, Motion Picture
Patricia Arquette, "Boyhood"
Jessica Chastain, "A Most Violent Year"
Keira Knightley, "The Imitation Game"
Emma Stone, "Birdman"
Meryle Streep, "Into the Woods"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Jessica Chastain after that explainable SAG snub (no screeners)
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: Laura Dern - Wild is struggling with awardage which is a real pity...

Best Supporting Actor, Motion Picture
Robert Duvall, "The Judge"
Ethan Hawke, "Boyhood"
Edward Norton, "Birdman"
Mark Ruffalo, "Foxcatcher"
J.K. Simmons, "Whiplash"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Everyone since this is the same list a SAG
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: Movie fans since there were several men who might have taken the Duvall spot (that few beyond his loyalists are passionate about) had they really been campaigned. But nature abhors a vacuum and without strong campaigns from the sidelines you get default "prestige" actors even if nobody likes their movie.

Best Director, Motion Picture
Wes Anderson, "The Grand Budapest Hotel"
Avu Duvernay, "Selma"
David Fincher, "Gone Girl"
Alejandro González Iñárritu, "Birdman"
Richard Linklater, "Boyhood"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Movie Lovers. I mean this category is insanely rich and kind of unexpected too.

VERY BAD NEWS FOR:... eh, not really. I still think Damien Chazelle (Whiplash), Morten Tyldum (Imitation Game), and James Marsh (Theory of Everything) have viable shots at an Oscar slot. Not all three will make it but *at least* one of them will.

Best Screenplay, Motion Picture
"The Grand Budapest Hotel"
"Gone Girl"
"Birdman"
"Boyhood"
"The Imitation Game"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Gone Girl which seems to have been fading with awards groups

Best Animated Feature
"The Boxtrolls"
"Big Hero 6"
"The Book Of Live"
"How To Train Your Dragon 2"
"The Lego Movie"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: The Book of Life and The Boxtrolls which both unquestionably needed a little mainstream awards love.

Best Foreign Language Film
"Force Majure" - Sweden
"Gett, the Trial of Viviane Amsalem" - Israel
"Ida" - Poland
"Leviathan" - Russian
"Tangerines" - Estonia

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Me, as an Oscar pundit since i've been predicting Tangerines forever and people have been like "what's that. why not [something more famous]?" ever since i started to.
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: nothing really. this category has different eligibility rules than Oscars and a different procedure to get to the nominees.

Best Original Song, Motion Picture
"Big Eyes" - "Big Eyes" - Music and Lyrics by: Lana Del Rey
"Glory" - "Selma" - Music and Lyrics by: John Legend, Common
"Mercy Is" - "Noah" - Music and Lyrics by: Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye
"Opportunity" - "Annie" - Music and Lyrics by: Greg Kurstin, Sia Furler, Will Gluck
"Yellow Flicker Beat" - "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Pt. 1" Music and Lyrics by: Lorde

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: no one since they don't get to perform on the ceremony which is just so so weird given the HFPA's interest in all star nominations in this category above anything else.
VERY BAD NEWS FOR: no one since this race is rarely correlative with Oscar's category. Still, it's super weird that "Lost Stars" from Begin Again isn't here.

Best Original Score, Motion Picture
Alexandre Desplat, "The Imitation Game"
Johann Johansson, "The Theory of Everything"
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, "Gone Girl"
Antonio Sanchez, "Birdman"
Hans Zimmer, "Interstellar"

VERY GOOD NEWS FOR: Antonio Sanchez -- his first film score!
VERY  BAD NEWS FOR: No one in particular

TELEVISION

"The Affair"
"Downton Abbey"
"Game of Thrones"
"The Good Wife"
"House of Cards"

I GUESS I NEED TO WATCH: "The Affair" which I really meant to.

Best Series, Musical or Comedy
"Girls"
"Jane the Virgin"
"Orange Is The New Black"
"Silicon Valley"

Best Mini-Series Or Motion Picture Made for Television"Fargo"
"The Missing"
"The Normal Heart"

"Olive Kitteridge"

Best Actress, Series - Drama
Claire Danes, "Homeland"
Viola Davis, "How To Get Away With Murder"
Julianna Margulies, "The Good Wife"
Ruth Wilson, "The Affair"
Robin Wright, "House of Cards"

DID YOU NOTICE THAT: awards don't seem to have room for Kerry Washington now that Viola Davis is part of Shondaland? Same thing happened at SAG yesterday

Best Actor, Series - Drama

Clive Owen, "The Knick"
Liev Schreiber, "Ray Donovan"
Kevin Spacey, "House of Cards"
James Spader, "The Blacklist"
Dominic West, "The Affair"

OOPSIE: this may well be the first category of anything ever outside of Grammys where i don't or haven't watched any of them.

Best Actress in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

Maggie Gyllenhaal, "The Honorable Woman"
Jessica Lange, "American Horror Story: Freak Show"
Frances McDormand, "Olive Kitteridge"
Frances O'Connor, "The Missing"
Allison Tolman, "Fargo"

YAY: Maggie Gyllenhaal. I haven't seen it yet but she's always welcome to be in more stuff.
BOO: Jessica Lange. I say this with some degree of provocation. Look she's very good / intrinsic to the mythos of American Horror Story but, like al default nominees, sometimes she doesnt' deserve it. We're not seeing anything on Freakshow from her that's up to her stuff on previous seasons. She's on repeat now. So are the awards.

Best Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television

Martin Freeman, "Fargo"
Mark Ruffalo, "The Normal Heart"
Billy Bob Thornton, "Fargo"
Matthew McConaughey, "True Detective"
Woody Harrelson, "True Detective"

Best Actress In A Series - Comedy Or Musical

Lena Dunham, "Girls"
Edie Falco, "Nurse Jackie"
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "Veep"

Best Actor In A Series - Comedy Or Musical

Louis C.K., "Louie"
Don Cheadle, "House of Lies"
Rickey Gervais, "Derek"
William H. Macy, "Shameless"
Jeffrey Tambor, "Transparent"

YAY: Transparent is just so great, you know? Tambor's best work ever.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role, Television

Uzo Aduba, "Orange Is The New Black"
Kathy Bates, "American Horror Story: Freak Show"
Joanne Froggatt, "Downton Abbey"
Allison Janney, "Mom"
Michelle Monaghan, "True Detective"

YAY FOR: Michelle Monaghan who was really good on True Detective and got next to no credit for being so.

AWARDS WATCHERS / CATEGORY FRAUD ENTHUSIASTS / EVERYONE TAKE NOTE...

Since you repeated the sentence "nature abhors a vacuum" twice I had to check online the meaning of "abhor". I love learning new words.

I can't stand Christoph Waltz. You're not alone.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

All three Hunger Games films have been nominated for Best Song at the Globes, but none have yet to score with Oscar.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJohn T

I am so confused about Map to the Stars. Is it anything remotely resembling a comedy? Is the film even eligible for 2014? I thought it has been pushed to 2015, without so much as a qualifying run this year. Anyone....what's the story here?

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJosh R

The Affair starts off very strongly (great pilot) but has quickly devolved into cartoonishness, and reminds me a good deal more of the Showtime-type offering I was expecting when it was first announced. A shame really.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKyle Pinion

Easier to understand Watts yesterday. There is clearly love for St. Vincent. I would imagine McCarthy was close to a nom.

Interstellar cut out again. I think they let their ego get the best of them and just expected everyone to love the film without as much as they love it themselves. I suddenly see a lot of "FYC" ads everywhere.

Surprised about Begin Again. Maybe it was just expected to get a spot so the voters went for other favs thinking everyone else would go for BA.

I understand the noms for Viola, she is brilliant, but it's like "Viola Davis playing 10 characters in search of coherence." Kerry is wonderful, but the show hasn't really let her do anything different from the past seasons. Can't argue with the other noms, but wish Maslany had gotten in. Yah Ruth Wilson. Freaking brilliant.

Supporting TV cats are weird at the GG.

Julianne! Julianne!! JULIANNE!!!...

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

this director category is crazy refreshing!

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterClara

@ Kermit: According to IMDb, <I>Still Alice</I> and <I>Cake</I> are both positioned for early March releases in the UK, which is often where the distributors here dump Oscar contenders that are barely released in the US, I think so that they are BAFTA eligible. I recall <I>Monster</I>'s release being late enough that Charlize wasn't nominated until the following year, which is possibly what sparked the avoidance of that kind of situation from then on. BAFTA have become a LOT more Oscar-focused in the past few years (a shame if you ask me) so I'd be surprised if they weren't eligible.

That said, while Julianne is surely a cert if eligible, I don't see Aniston getting in at BAFTA.

Best thing about the Globe noms is so easily <I>Pride</I>. So good to see it recognised.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDavid

Also interesting: Frances McDormand is nominated against that Fargo actress. I wish Nicole Kidman would present the award to Madonna.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

Aniston is just doing Rachel Green with a fake scar and no make up. Enough all ready for feeling sorry for someone for losing a husband. I am sick of this nonsense, Cottilard gives a much more nuanced performance.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterGEM

Hayden W. - LOL

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

RE: Crazy Eyes' Crazy Category placement: Remember too the various quirks of the varying awards: The Emmy was for the first season, where she was not in every episode, so the "Guest" categorization was actually kind of appropriate. This Globe nomination is for the second season and is exactly the right placement as the show is a true ensemble, and even moreso in the second season. The SAG doesn't have a Supporting category for TV (WEIRD). So yes, it is crazy, but perhaps not as shameful as it would appear on paper.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

@David - thanks for the info, that makes sense (it's been a while since there was a big contender at Oscar who wasn't eligible at BAFTA - Bullock in 2009 and Leo in 2008 I think?)

I also agree that Aniston will struggle there - they'll need to screener properly (and probably won't be bothered to). There's also a strong love for Amy Adams at BAFTA - remember when Viola missed for Doubt but Adams still got in? Or when Leo missed for The Fighter but Adams still got in?

If Moore is eligible, visible and seen by voters, I'm predicting -

Moore
Jones

Pike (though I feel she's the more vulnerable of the two surefire Brits in the mix - remember when Keira missed for Pride & Prejudice?)

Cotillard (BAFTA have traditionally always been the least-discriminatory against foreign language performances)
Mbatha-Raw (it's been a while since we saw a 'British Wild Card' nomination that was quite regular for a time - I'm thinking she gets it this year, though I also reckon that Spall and a supporting female from Mr Turner are a given - that film has been a hit at the UK arthouses)

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKermit_The_Frog

Marion Cotillard - Best performance in a movie this year for 2D1N
Lisa Kudrow - Bestperformance in a TV show this year for The Comeback

I actually love living in a world in which I'm not part of the consensus when it comes to these affairs for the masses. No choices the Golden Globes or Oscars can make would make me upset because I have nothing invested in them. When they nominate someone because of their talent and their talent only, fine. But that is the exception. I'm not really interested in those people's opinion because historically they have shown to respond mostly to formulas, marketing and popularity and those three things have absolutely nothing to do with art. I love movies and I know this blog gives a lot of focus to the Oscars, but I felt that to link my love for movies to the Oscars could turn that said love into something else, always trying to classify things as Oscar-worthy or not. I still like all the variety this blog has to offer and the passion with which its writers write about movies in general.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Goodbar

Why don't you all wait for Into The Woods to actually come out before affirming that Meryl is nominated for "anything" ? The Witch part seems very challenging and heartwrenching if Meryl doesn't overact it ... I was bored by her nominations for Iron Lady and Osage County but this one gets me very excited !!!
On the other hand, i would loooove to see Laura Dern and Rene Russo get an Oscar nomination....

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterClement

Yup, the arbitrary Music Branch rules strike again. The Hanging Tree has lyrics taken straight from the novel, so it's ineligible in Original Song. Song is Music & Lyrics for the Academy's purposes.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRobert G

A doubly good day for Dominic West.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Clement- I agree. The role of the witch is deserving. It is not like Julia Roberts in Mirror Mirror. Why is anyone surprised at this nomination? And of course Meryl is nominated a lot.. globes have categories for comedy, drama, and TV roles. If she can get 18 nominations for Oscar - she can surely get 29 for Globes.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

By and large the best group of nominees the HFPA has produced in maybe ever. No huge beefs with any of them. I feel like Downton Abbey has slipped a little, but I would be perfectly content with those 5 for Emmy. The Affair is really good - Ruth Wilson is just as perfect here as she was in Luther. Fav nominee of course has to be Wes Anderson for TGBH. That 5th slot is very fluid and I'm beginning to believe he can make it.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

first Oprah now Angelina and Clint... they're officially no longer the star-fuckers they once were :)))

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

No love for THE AMERICANS? Boooo Golden Globes. That show is one of the best that's on TV right now. Meanwhile, Downton Abbey gets another nod after a truly terrible season. Ridiculous.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterprincesskaraoke

I would be curious to hear what you think of The Affair once you get around to watching it. The lead actors are terrific and there are great moments, but I can't fully embrace it as a viewer. Frankly, I think it's being overpraised.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterSarah

Where is Oscar Isaac? This sucks.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

A couple of thoughts on British TV nominations -

1) The Honourable Woman
Maggie was great in this, though it's testament to her star power that she gets recognised for this while two superior performances (Janet McTeer and Stephen Rea) don't. Nathaniel, you should really check it out - a great drama and Gyllenhaal, McTeer and Lindsay Duncan are a great actress trifecta (while Lubna Azabal and Katharine Parkinson are also great)

2) The Missing
Notwithstanding the fact that I don't really rate Frances O'Connor in this series (or the show itself for that matter), it should be noted that the series is still airing in the UK (and presumably the rest of the world?) What are their eligibility rules?

I would have loved a nomination for Gillian Anderson or Jamie Dornan in The Fall too...

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterKermit_The_Frog

What so great about Downton Abbey that makes it better than MAd Men or "the Americans"? And I like Downtown Abbey

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered Commentermagicub

The Grand Budapest Hotel deserves to win every category it is nominated in.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterPatryk

Very happy that Gone Girl was not nominated for best picture.

Very sad that Angelina Jolie and Scott Rudin will not have a tense "face off" during the ceremony.

Happy for Julianne Moore that she seems to be on her way to an Oscar.

As for Meryl, stop blaming her for the world's problems. She is just an actress.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJono

You mentioned it with best actor musical comedy but the Waltz and Murray nominations seem lazy especially when they could have gone with some really interesting choices like Bill Hader for the Skeleton Twins. Surprised by the Fincher nomination especially without a best picture nod. All in all pretty much what I expected from globes. I've been worried that Duvall would take that last supporting slot for awhile if some one else didn't emerge and now here he is. Damn It

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMike Troutman

BAFTA loves Julianne Moore. Her mother was Scottish, which the UK press enjoy reminding us. They even nominated her for The Kids are Alright when Oscar ignored her. In fact I'd predict a double Best Actress nomination for her as she was so well received in the UK for Maps to the Stars back in the summer. The BAFTA is without a doubt hers. The question will be for which film!? She'll be joined by Pike, Jones & Cotillard. I think Witherspoon would be snubbed at BAFTA nomination morning.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterChris UK

All the crap I've been like "Will we really be saying "Academy Award Nominee Jennifer Aniston" in the near future? Oh lord." is as sexist as it is ridiculous. Every year, below average male talent like Bradley Cooper, Hugh Jackman, Mark Wahlberg or Jonah Hill gets nominations and nobody says anything.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDundas

*been hearing

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDundas

Dundas - Oh, please. I don't know about the others, but PLENTY of people had PLENTY to say about both of Jonah Hill's nominations. In fact, people had that exact same quote about Hill after his "Moneyball" nomination ("we now have to say Academy Award nominee Jonah Hill before [fill in blank] gets a single nomination?"). Those were not universally nominations loved by any means.

And unfortunately, your other examples aren't so great. Cooper and Jackman are legitimately talented, even if you don't think they deserved their nominations. Wahlberg can be good in the right vehicle but a lot of people questioned how he got singled out for "The Departure" amidst that cast.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

* universally loved

ha. we both did the same thing.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

Still, Aniston is good when she tries and is a better actor than Jackman or Cooper. Take a look at "Friends with Money", for evidence. The "popcorn movie actress should not be at Oscars" treatment she's been getting is unfair.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterDundas

These awards are a joke...about 90 journalists vote. most paid by the studios and networks...they mean nothing....so laughable.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJR323

I'd nominate Meryl based on her Glam "Into the Woods" trailer segments alone - HOT!

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

I wonder if BAFTA would place Meryl in lead? It has happened before in what were supporting roles.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Did Unbroken get snubbed because the judges hadn't seen it?

This is the same mob that nominated The Tourist for Best Picture -C/M a few years ago!!!

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterBette Streep

Josh -- MAPS TO THE STARS is compeltely a comedy. though i guess the correct term for its genre is "satire". Julianne is hysterical in it--- the funniest of these five performances for sure. Not that they vote on "funniest" in comedy. I think Blunt will win.

Dundas -- i'm afraid i cant follow you down that road in regards to Aniston. I think she's talented (good comedienne - emmy worthy for Friends for damn sure) but she's got nothing on the range of Cooper & Jackman who both have incredibly facility for multiple genres and are both (by all reports though I cant verify with Cooper yet) excellent stage actors, too.

i will never understand the praise for her work in Good Girl and Friends with Money -- both of which I thought she was extremely boring in as if she thought the way to play "depressed" was just to be glum and supress her innate and very large charisma as an actor.

all that said Cake is for sure her best dramatic performance yet (i think because she lets her comic instinct run around underneath the glum surface)

Clement --= i think Streep is more deserving for INTO THE WOODS than her past couple of Oscar nods but I still feel opressed by her being nominated for everything all the time. I honestly feel -- no matter how great she is -- that people vote for her on reflex... like how they vote for Jessica Lange and Ellen Burstyn and Maggie Smith... and i think it's not good for awardage that any performer reaches that level where they don't have to be particularly special or better than good to win nominations as if they're just entitled to it by existing. and I love those actresses as a general rule! (well, not Lange who I've historically been cool on, but you know what I'm saying I hope)

Kermit -- hmmm. i don't even know what "The Missing" is.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Jase -- I WISH I HAD THAT POWER ;) but thank you

Hayden -- comment of the month. LMFAO

Jamie -- agreed that Streep is a lock. I still think Dern has a shot but you're right that she won't be bumping Streep. Into the Woods is enjoyable enough that it will only continue to grow now, not flame out like some of the less enjoyable christmas options

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Another record for Meryl. I think this is Golden Globe nomination #29 for her.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

brandz -- yup. the Globes love her crazy much

MOST HONORED GLOBE PERFORMERS EVER (THAT ARE USUALLY THOUGHT OF AS "FILM" RATHER THAN "TV" STARS THOUGH MOST PEOPLE HAVE SOME MIX OF GLOBE NOMS

1. Meryl Streep - 29 nominations / 8 wins
2. Jack Lemmon - 21 nominations / 4 wins / 2 special non-competitive awards
3. Shirley Maclaine - 19 nominations / 5 wins / 2 special non-competitive awards

i dont know if i'm forgetting someone but i think those are there three favorites

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

First, you really should check out The Knick. From a filmmaking perspective its among Soderbergh's best work ever, although the writing is often clunky.

Second, I could see how it appears as though Uzo Aduba is committing category fraud given that you could argue that she is only submitting as Best Supporting in shows where there isn't a Guest Acting category, but it's important to remember that the Emmy's were awarding Season 1 of OITNB and SAG and the GG's are awarding for Season 2. Aduba wasn't in every episode of Season 1, and more importantly, she wasn't a series regular contractually that season and was thus eligible for the Guest Acting category (in addition to being paid less than she would have been as a series regular). She was bumped up to series regular for Season 2, so even if SAG or GG had a guest actress category, she wouldn't have been eligible and will also have to submit as supporting actress at the next Emmys.

There have been worse instances of category fraud, especially when you are dealing with a show that has so many great female performances that would never have all been nominated had they not played a little fast and loose with the category.

December 11, 2014 | Unregistered Commenterchasgoose

chasgoose -- but therein lies the problem. i object to people constantly playing fast and loose to insure nominations. even if deserving what is the point of categories if people can be nominated who are not actually part of that category? If no one cares about category integrity, better to just have a 20 best actors (all genders types of roles) awards.

NOT THAT I'M ADVOCATING THAT. Just that i wish people would have integrity about it so that it meant more when someone was recognized the best (i.e. they were actually among that type of "best" ;)

btw i love Aduba on that show ! But i don't buy into the Guest / Supporting nonsense with Emmy. don't care about the contracts because they don't obey those anyway when it comes to submissions! to me if you're in all the episodes or even most of them you're a series regular (Joan Cusack on Shameless. Shaking my damn head every time she gets nominated for something... you cannot be a "guest star" and be in every episode of every season of a series!

December 11, 2014 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

JRJ -232. this is not actually true. Golden Globes are not paid for by the studios else you wouldn't have situations like today where Universal got totally snubbed by them despite having been in favor before. The HFPA *are* schmoozed by the studios (as are journalists, Oscar bloggers, Academy members, NBR, critics, etcetera) but nobody i know of is actually "bought"... or if they are they do a very very good job of hiding it. My guess is there's not enough money for that given how many different groups are being constantly courted.

every once in a while you will hear a snarky story about "they got nominated because they gave everybody gifts!" but, you know even if you find loopholes for gifts, it's still no guarantee that people are going to vote for you when their ballot is in hand.

the only thing that feels absolutely suspicious to me each year is NBR's Clint Eastwood fetish. LOL. Because that's failsafe. no matter what the audience/critical reaction to a film. I have every confidence that if he hadn't arrived with American Sniper for Christmas they would have given JERSEY BOYS sometimes despite people's total mocking of it.

December 11, 2014 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

wow now after SAG and Globe nominations, Aniston has a great chance to be Oscar nominee, Monty the Cat was right!

so happy for Gylenhaal, Chastain and Phoenix, but so angry at the exclusion of Begin Again!

surprised at the lovefest for The Affair, and Alan Cumming! woohoo

Where is Marion Cotillard who gave two of the best performances this year?

Sigh, just when the SAGs come through, the Globes ruin it all. How can they snub Maslany when they've clearly see her work....

And no Cotillard either, though that's unexpected.

My fave nomination is Lorde because I'm a kiwi and she is the queen of New Zealand.

Not convinced Aniston will make to Oscar though. Think Adams, Swank or Cotillard will get in there. Hoping for Marion but expecting Adams.
