I miss the days when US audiences went to the arthouse and talked about subtitled hits... *sniffle* Now people only binge-watch American television. We're a nation of shut-ins!

Nat, that's the current Canada/Québec poster for "Tom à la ferme." It's finally supposed to hit theatres in Québec on March 28th...unless it gets postponed again.
bill - i figured that since the title is in french. you guys are so lucky you get his movies. i have no idea what the US's problem is.
I hope they go small and simple with the next Bond movie. I loved Skyfall but it's totally bloated and self-important - give me a ninety minute fun romp this time. If they feel the need to have the majority of it set on the beach / underwater a la Thunderball where it's nothing but Sean Connery in a swimsuit the entire time, I am sure Daniel Craig, and the entire world, would be fine with that too.
I saw "Tom at the Farm" at the AFI Fest. It's definitely my favorite Dolan film, quite tense and neatly executed, but it still doesn't add up to much in the end. Yet I can't say I didn't enjoy the heck out of it.
I would watch the crap out of a Pushing Daisies musical. But only if they get Cheno to play Olive.
Loved Tom at the Farm at TIFF., and totally with you on the sorry state of foreign film viewing in the US these days. The "tv is better than film" argument is so insidious because it just betrays a total lack of curiosity and adventurousness on the part of many viewers, and a near total unwillingness to get off the couch and exert any effort to expand their cultural profile. Boo.
I''m not too unhappy at the news that Deakins isn't returning for the next Bond films. He did sterling work on Skyfall, but I think it's important that the Bond films don't become to reliant on past successes.
I'm also inclined to agree with JA - the next film could do with being a bit lighter and quicker. In short, the best way to follow up Skyfall will be not to make a film that invites direct comparisons with Skyfall.
That "Reality Bites" piece was a lovely read. Interesting to read how much Ben Stiller actually related to his character, and a great reminder of what a star Winona was. I remember when she shot a small indie film in my town in 1994 and every sighting of her was breathless news.
I can't stand stories like Bradley Cooper's. I still wish there was a certain decorum about White House visits. Don't wear flip flops, do wear underwear.
Roark -- that's just it! It's not that TV doesn't have high quality shows. I watch several myself. It's that audiences when they go to the movies are only going to the big titles that are essentially like TV series that they're familiar with onscreen (the franchises and whatnot) and not seeking out any of the great stuff that's available. It's just people turning into uncurious consumers. I second your "boo"
I'm a faithful reader so it took me less than two seconds to guess it ;)
Everyone: go see that screening of West Side Story! To watch it on a big screen is a mind-blowing experience.
Hmm...I would've assumed make-up or visual effects as the last-bestpicturey categories.
Arkaan - you'd be (mostly) right - Original Song is in there as well. But my post was just on the four acting categories. Will hopefully be able to dive into the rest of the categories soon (don't mean to overlook them - they don't get nearly enough attention).
Fine. I'll be the one to investigate the Mystery of Bradley Cooper's Underwear.
The Vanity Fair article is really, REALLY funny.
I've been falling for B-Coop lately, but if he truly doesn't know how to wear pants, it's over.
