Situation Linky

Arts.Mic Our Manuel dives deep on TV's family sitcom through history and how it does and doesn't reflect our changing world. Fun and depressing stats.
Dark Horizons BBC will try adapting Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" into a franchise. Exciting since those books are so complex and adult (movies were probably never the right approach) but that said... good luck besting Nicole Kidman's Miss Coulter in the aborted movie franchise
Oscar Conversations [video] director, costume designer, and composer talk Beasts of No Nation
Africa is a Country Noah Tsikas with an alternative perspective on the much lauded Beasts of No Nation

Pajiba lists 20 upcoming sci-fi fantasy movies that are NOT from a franchise. How exciting. Original or fresh adaptations. Of course some of these will launch franchises if they're big
Guardian Colin Welland, Oscar winning screenwriter of Chariots of Fire has died.
People Adele cites Madonna's "Frozen" as an inspirational song in her life. Same. That song rescued me at the time, no joke. (Love it when artists show Madonna respect rather than dissing her)
Little White Lies has a whole freaking issue on Carol ! Beautiful motion cover, too
Los Angeles Times the ongoing drama of Quentin Tarantino vs the police
Boy Culture somehow I missed this Mommie Dearest night in Manhattan with actress Rutanya Alda (The Deer Hunter, Mommie Dearest) and Michael Musto
Awards Daily talks to Tab Hunter about the documentary Tab Hunter: Confidential which is really fun if you're into Old Hollywood history
Playbill Here's a project with potential I hadn't heard a peep about: Shirley Maclaine and Amanda Seyfried will co-star in a movie about an old woman who wants to control everything including her own obituary. A young reporter has other ideas.
Variety Brad Pitt & Marion Cotillard (what a lovely pair) are headling Robert Zemeckis next feature and its got an Oscar hungry Thanksgiving 2016 release date

Beauty Breaks
if you need it -- and who doesn't from time to time?
My New Plaid Pants Edgar Ramirez three times
NY Times amazing never before seen 80s photos of Madonna, Warhol, and Basquiat
Queerty on Empire's Jussie Smollet. Mmmm. Are any of you watching Season 2 of Empire? I don't like it quite as much this year but Jussie & Taraji & Gabby are still great fun
Vogue chooses best dressed: Meryl, Alicia, and someone named... Sienna Miller (sp?)
VJ Brendan Nicholas Hoult in Hero magazine. I saw this mag cover in London but if I'd known the photos were this good. It's a pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty reminder that he was so great in Mad Max Fury Road earlier this year. FYC people.

WHAT A LOVELY DAY!

Empire is suffering from the Will & Grace syndrome... Where a once fun show is getting bogged down in endless guest-starring spots. As I much as I love Marisa Tomei she is horrid on it!

Poor Nic. Not only was she legitimately perfect casting as Mrs. Coulter but she also turned in a fine performance to boot which will never really be remembered because the movie "tanked".

And there's something missing from Empire this season. Other than the premiere, all the episodes have been mostly "meh". I will say that the booby prosecutor is my favorite unintentional visual gag. Her breasts are always front, center and angry for JUSTICE.

Wait... what? Meryl made it on a "Best Dressed" list???
Who saw that coming?!
"It's a miracle!"
OMFG....

That image of Nicole is ...sigh. She is physically unable to take a bad pic. She is now dubbed Photogenia.

Has there ever been a movie so perfectly cast and yet turned out so unfortunately as "The Golden Compass"? Seriously. Has there ever?

November 4, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTom M

Tom M: The only thing I'd identify as a casting misstep was Iorek. The studio got a better actor, but why not actually go nordic for those characters?

While I'd love a reason to boycott Hateful Eight, this is not it. For once: #TeamQuentin.

November 4, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

DAVID -- i had the same reaction which is why i didn't mention it!

November 4, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Paul Outlaw: Exactly. They're denying anything wrong being done like mad and their justification for why what Quentin's saying is tasteless is insane. A cop dies in the line of duty? Tragic, but understandable. A cop shoots an UNARMED civilian of ANY race for ANY reason? Bleep that cop. And if you don't honestly think things need changing, consider that 161 unarmed civilians got killed this year by cops. There is no year where that shouldn't be 0.

Please, somebody help me! Is it pronounced Juicy Smollett or Juss-ie Smollett?

Phew. Anyway, just got out of seeing Brooklyn. Talk about a lot of beauty. Wow.

Kidman cannot agreeably take a bad photo ... only bad movies...

just saw the previews of her next movie with Julia Roberts... knowing this blog loves their trailers ( I don't )... Roberts hams it up while Kidman simply sits there!

Streep will be unhappy to hear that she made it on Vogue's best dressed list... she had worked quite hard for years to be the worst dressed( and succeeded! ) ..

Actually, this last year she has dressed much better ..

Speaking of Kidman, how (HOW?!) have you not written about what you thought of her in Photograph 51 ?? (unless I've missed it, tho I doubt it!)

November 4, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCarlos

Nicole was the best thing about that "Golden Compass" movie- the girl is lead was dreadful which is probably why the series never tool off.... wow Mr Hoult is a real looker that boy was born to be a movie star

November 4, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

I think Empire has become almost unwatchable except for the Cookie/Hakeem storyline. Honestly, since when is Hakeem the most likable character on that show??

November 4, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Boy, Kidman was DELICIOUS in The Golden Compass.

November 5, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

really trying to read this Beasts of No Nation article (Idris!) but I just can't with this sentence

"But the film evokes the type of Tarzanism by which Western cultural producers perpetually seek to gain artistic legitimacy, proffering a cinematic vision of reflexive violence (couched as inherently, ahistorically “African”) as well as an especially aggrandizing, extratextual portrait of an American male director who made a “risky,” malarial, downright Conradian trek into the darkness of the global South."
