Where My Links At

Before We Get Started...
First image of Emily Blunt from Sicario which will premiere at Cannes.  She plays an FBI agent pushed to her limits. I'm not quite sure why I decided to get so excited about this movie but I did so I'm running with it.

THR Natalie Portman gears up for promotion of her Cannes entry A Tale of Love and Darkness, calls Oscar a "false idol"
/Film Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon's Big Little Lies project will be a limited series for HBO now. With Michelle Pfeiffer's hubby writing it! Since it's about three women can La Pfeiff be in it, too? Just suggesting! Free advice; we got it right here.
MNPP Alex Garland (Ex Machina) starts lining up a lucky female cast for his next trippy Annihilation - Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton? Wow.
In Contention Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt's By The Sea, a marital drama set in France in the 1970s, gets a release date: November 13th. Should we add it to Oscar charts?
Dissolve Juliette Binoche to play Pearl S Buck in a biopic.
EW features Hateful Eight on its cover. I feel robbed. Unless it's a fold-out this is only Hateful Three: Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Samuel L Jackson.

Dissolve ...okay I spoke too quickly. There are also character posters of the other ones

Esquire Age of Ultron reviewed by a 9 year old:

If you like movies about robots who make jokes, or movies about girls singing lullabyes to the Hulk, or movies about cities that float into the air for no reason, Age of Ultron will be right up your alley.

I like movies about all those things except the cities floating in the air part. Never dug that. Not even in The Empire Strikes Back

Exit Video
Today's intriguing watch. A trailer for the Netflix series Sense8 by the Wachowski siblings.

It looks to have a very confusing sci-fi premise (what else is new with them?) about 8 people in different cities being mind-connected or something. But Doona Bae (yes) and Max Riemelt (very sexy German actor who you might have seen in Free Fall, streaming on Netflix) star. Plus Daryl Hannah (!!!!!!!!!). Plus they throw some gay-leaning group sex into the trailer so... why the hell not try it out in June? You can always abort the binge-watching if they show doesn't grab you.

Julianne, Tilda, AND Natalie......?! This is too good to be true.

I'll believe By the Sea as an Oscar contender if and when it happens. Not before. Worth putting somewhere lower on the charts, though, just in case.

"Annihilation" is a good read, but it is going to be VERY hard to adapt. It's a bit Lovecraftian, and if anything might benefit from an approach closer to "Under the Skin". That's a reassuring team to be working on it, though.

Saw A MOST VIOLENT YEAR this week, and I have to add "doing an Al Pacino imitation" to the list of things Isaac is best at. (Not a disparaging comment.)

I just finished reading Big Little Lies. There are parts for two slightly "older" women (think 40 and 35), and then a younger woman of about 25. But really, since it's Hollywood you could fiddle with the ages, just don't cast Jennifer Lawrence in the 40 year old role please!!

Michelle could definitely play the 40something, very girly but tough "mother hen" role. I assume that is what Nicole is signed for. There is a role for the "most beautiful woman in the world" that Michelle could have done in her sleep 20 years ago. Now they'd want someone like Rosamund Pike. I think Jennifer Connelly would be good in that role (though it's blonde in the book). Beautiful and kind of vaguely distracted all the time.

OMG, shut up, Natalie Portman. If it's such a "false idol" then give it to Annette Bening. She was more than happy to get that Oscar and now she's above it? She doesn't even know where it is? WHATEVER.

Other than that, I read Bg Little Lies the moment I heard Nicole was attached to it (which is also what i did about 2-3 years ago with The Family Fang). There's a role for Michelle (Renata) if she wants to have it. Well, depending on what roles Nicole and Reese are playing, she could actually be one of the three leads.

If By The Sea is Brad and Angelina's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, i'm so there.

Dave - I totally see Nicole going for Celeste in the adaptation.

A false idol she hustled like fuck to get. That made the director, crew and marketing team of that movie lie about a dancer's hard work so it would be easier for her to get it. That made her sell her fucking pregnancy every step of the way. That was important enough to make her have one of the most "out there", in-your-face, unbearable campaigns in recent years.

A false idol she happily and tear-eyed accepted in front of a global audience.

If you're so above it now, Natalie, give it to Benning or Michelle Williams who both deserved it more than you.

Excited for Sicario myself.

A drug war crime film from the guy that directed Prisoners, with Emily Blunt as a female lead? Sold.

May 8, 2015 | Unregistered Commentertonytr

Man people have always really enjoyed hating on Natalie. Even commenters here I guess.

May 8, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterAnonny

Well, the Beckford video is interesting, Is there room for another Magic Mike? Not for me.

If Pheiffer doesn't want to work, that is her business. I will survive. As will all of you.

Portman is just like that profile. The writer nailed it. At one point, she was pushing to play Anne Frank on Broadway. I would have loved to have seen that.

May 8, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterHenry

Doona Bae was all that was needed to say YES to Sense8.

May 8, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterKL

man, I thought that pic was just another glamour shot, but that eye bruise is quite an unexpected twist! can't wait for Sicario and moreover Emily.

Natalie seems to take herself too seriously for her own good.

Little Big Lies sounds so intriguing, just if they cast J-Law for the 3rd mom.

May 8, 2015 | Unregistered Commenterfadhil

Even if this is a film site (therefore Oscar talk), Natalie Portman talks about much more important things in the article than getting a gold statue.

May 9, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMe34

Wow, people are being really hard on Portman. It's entirely possible to crave, campaign for and achieve an award that can increase your perceived bankability in the industry. It's also possible to simultaneously recognise that said award does not objectively make you the best actress of that year, let alone all time. Isn't that all she's saying? From some of the responses here, I thought she was actively rewriting history!

If we have to do a remake, why not "Where the boys are" Lots of young, hot bodies in swim wear on the beach. A great song to be remade.

Or,,,,,,,new bopics of Leslie Gore or Dusty Springfield (Sienna Miller or Zac Efron can star).

May 9, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterHenry

First Oscar and now Natalie, Tilda and Julianne, Alex Garland is clearly after my fandom! That MNPP Oscar Isaac countdown was adorable.

May 9, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

I'm in love with Samuel L. Jackson's Hateful Eight coat.

May 9, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersvg

Perhaps it's exactly *because* Natalie got so caught up in the promotion machine for Black Swan that she came to see the statue as a "false idol." She's hardly the first actor to come out of Oscar season feeling like she needed some new perspective on the whole game.

Re Sense8 -- very excited about the cast. Doona Bae (one of the best things in Cloud Atlas) and Naveen Andrews (loved him on LOST) and the hot dude from Free Fall (excellent German gay movie) and Brian J Smith (fantastic on Broadway as the Gentleman Caller in the Glass Menagerie with Zachary Qunito) and Darryl Hannah, hopefully kicking some some Elle Driver-style butt. Sign. Me. Up.

Totally sold on Sense8. Can't wait for it.

May 9, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterBrian

All this Natalie Portman is giving me nightmare flashbacks to her pregnancy "so blessed" speeches at award shows in 2010/11. The. WORST.
