TIFF's Red Carpet, Much Improved

Jose here, with a new life mission: make someone as happy as Kate Winslet looked at the premiere of The Dressmaker.

The Oscar winner was the epitome of radiance as she walked the red carpet in a stunning Badgley Mischka design. Official reports say she was blowing kisses to the crowd, signing autographs and putting on her best face for her fans, however I choose to believe she was smiling because she saw how improved the looks were at the festival by the time she arrived. See the looks after the jump.

Last time around we had pure disappointment, but as the stars made it to Canada from Venice, they brought old world glamour with them.

L-R: Fanning, Shipka, K.Stew, Fonda, Weisz, Vikander

Elle Fanning is a gift to fashion lovers. A gift I tell you! Her Emilio Pucci dress brings boho-meets-old-Hollywood-glamour to the red carpet of About Ray. It's sure to be one of the most breathtaking looks of the year. Elle's contemporary, Kiernan Shipka was almost as wonderful in a playful Delpozo cocktail dress. Can you believe these two were born after 1998? If they're such good dressers before adulthood, can you imagine the years of sartorial brilliance ahead? Sigh. Once upon a time, K.Stew seemed to be uncomfortable in every single piece of cloth she wore, enter Karl Lagerfeld who took her under his wing and not only made her Chanel's darling, he also allowed her to find the confidence she needed to bring her effortless beauty to his elaborate work. It's a match made in heaven. A suggestion for AMPAS, revamp the Oscar statuette by using Jane Fonda in YSL as inspiration! Rachel Weisz and Alicia Vikander both wore Louis Vuitton to the premiere of their films, The Lobster and The Danish Girl respectively. Weisz's lovely gown made me wonder if actors with multiple films in festivals show which of their movies they like the most by picking better gowns to their premiere...while Vikander is such a vision, that I gasped when I saw her. Look at that hair...

But not everyone at TIFF has been doing an effort...

L-R: Watts, Olsen, Weisz, Ronan

You know how children take to expressing their discontent and anxiety through the clothes they wear? I think Naomi Watts' parents need to talk to her, soon. After showing off her excessive love of drapery just last week, she gave exactly zero fucks by showing up to the premiere of About Ray in a Pepto-colored-Balmain suit she didn't even bother to iron! Young lady, an intervention is in store! Elizabeth Olsen chose to not see the light in this disastrous Juan Carlos Obando design, while Weisz chose a busy Valentino resort gown to represent Youth. Perhaps she thought no one would pay attention to what she was wearing since Jane Fonda was going to be there? Saoirse Ronan decided to pay homage to Elizabeth Banks in Love and Mercy with her sweet Chanel combo, but she bought jeans a little too big, and a sweater a tad too small. She's lovely, so I won't be hard on her, instead I'll praise her for loving Banks in that movie as much as I do.

Which of these looks were your favorite dear readers?

Jane Fonda never disappoints, she's a MOVIE STAR! damn it, she knows it and she knows what is expected of her. Love Rachel Weisz's effortless elegance in the first dress, the second well.......maybe it looked better in person. Vikander looks great but poor Ronan is straight from a 90's Sears catalog.

Is Jane Fonda single? I would totally do her.

Elizabeth Olsen reminds me of Maggie Gyllenhaal in that photo.

Rachel Weisz is one of the most beautiful people in the world, but she seems intent on disproving that notion through those fashions.

I'll give my vote to Alicia for best in show (more of this Alicia and less costumes) while I would love it if Kate looked at me like that, that dress is kind of basic. Like Macy's basic.

Much better, I love the improvement over your last post. But I'm really surprised that Ronin didn't make more of an effort, after all she is being talked about as best actress. She needs to up her game. I loved seeing Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda really bring it.
