Golden Globe Nominations are in for 2016

Cheadle, Dern, and Kendrick started this morning off with a bang reading the Golden Globe nominations which gave us lots of surprises connected to Nocturnal Animals, Supporting Actor, and the Comedy/Musical categories in general.

We polled the team on the most "WTF?" inclusions and awful snubs as well as favorite nominations in tv and film. We even ask them to imagine dinner parties and orgies of Globe nominees. We are nothing if not thorough(ly) excited every December.

But ICYMI here are the nominations themselves...

Favorite noms this morning: First-time nominees Mandy Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Riz Ahmed, Riley Keough and Joel Edgerton plus the remembrance of "The Lobster" (yes Colin Farrell!) and "Sing Street" (but where's Best Original Song?!).

I forgot to add, I miss some love for The Lonely Island at Best Song. "Popstar" was a quite hilarious film with something to say

@goran Im not sure whether you are having a go at me or ageeingwith me :) but I'm not going to forgive Mel for his personal failings. On the other hand if his Hollywood Celebrity means any kind of a boost for the Aussie film industry then I'll welcome the accolades. I'm more inclined to think his new found appreciation for Australia may be short lived. Especially if Hollywood re-embraces him. Forget that true blu Aussie story. We'll just have to continue basking in the reflected glory as we do with all the others.

Anyway, I'm seeing Rogue One this weekend not Hacksaw Ridge so I'm not helping the Aussie film industry there. Then I'm more interested in trying to catch up with The Daughter and Goldstone, both of which I missed in the cinema, and Lion when it's finally released in Australia.

Just remembered there's an new Aussie movie coming out called Red Dog: True Blue. Who needs Mel Gibson.

The biggest surprise for me was the lack of love for Fences.

Isn't it kind of rude if Meryl Streep is at the Globes to receive this year's All Time Great Award, but she doesn't win in her category? I would be pissed if I was invited to a party on my honour and I didn't get the award on my category, but maybe I'm just being petty.

I haven't been this excited to find out the BAFTA (Jan 10) and DGA (1/12) nominations in years.

All of this love for Gibson males me wish that Gervais was hosting the show. He would sort the situation out real quick. I don't think Jimmy Fallon is up to the task.

Third thought I should have posted earlier... it's amazing, John Travolta scored his 7th nom, the first one for TV. He only won for "Get Shorty", and another special one in the late 70s. Had "Grease" been released one year later, Travolta, one of the actors most laughed at, would have earned noms on each one of FIVE decades (70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s). Further proof, he's one of the greatests at work, despite his resume full of bad choices. Out of curiosity, his noms were all quite undisputable: "Saturday Night Fever", "Grease", "Get Shorty" and "Primary Colors" in Comedy/Musical, "Pulp Fiction" in Drama, and "Hairspray" as Supporting (even thought he was the main credit out of the ensemble cast).

Looking at this resume, one has to wonder why he's still with only 2 Oscar noms and no win. I guess scientology and lack of sympathies have to do with that.

Peggy -- especially since didnt they love Denzel's otherwise ignored "great debaters" movie?

Sad for lack of Love and Friendship.

Garfield did not impress me but I kind of enjoy that younger men get some nominations so I don't hate it. Don't know who I would really replace him with either since I have not seen enough films that had great male performances this year.

Paul Outlaw... yeah, Willis is overdue, also. Still, it's really known he is kind of an asshole, as Kevin Smith publicly said after directing/suffering him in "Cop Out", the only Smith film in which he didn't have creative control.

Smith can be better or worse (to me, he's made 3 masterpieces and a couple of essential films) but he's known to be kind of the friendliest, easier to work with, directors out there. You only have to see how many of his actors return again and again to work with him for minimum wage.

Chris Pine should have been nominated for " Hell And High Water" - the Globes like to kiss Tom Fords over rated ass

December 12, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

@ Joanne - The only reason he came back to Australia to film Hacksaw Ridge was because he knew our stupid fucking government would give him all of the coin he wanted for the production when nobody else would. If New Zealand, or South Africa (or anywhere else really) had stumped up the cash, he would have gone there. There's nothing remotely patriotic about it at all.

Hope Huppert's inclusion in the lineup is a sign she'll be Oscar-nominated. I would be deliriously happy if she wins the Golden Globe and get an Oscar nomination. I would consider that a great year for her already.

Come to think of it, when was the last time an actress won the GG in a foreign-language film? Was it Cotillard in La Vie en Rose?

Was hoping Ralph Fiennes, Lily Gladstone and Rebecca Hall will be nominated for the Golden Globes, but I still hope that at least one of them sneaks in the morning the Oscar nominations are announced.
