I' m a bit surprised that "Love & Friendship" is not appearing in more top 10's or any sort of lists or awards. it's at 98% in rotten tomatoes and was a summer indie hit. Can somebody explain?
Did Lawson really pick The Meddler as No. 1? Damn.
Ryan Reynolds, "Entertainer of the Year", was a clear pick. He's my pick for Best Actor of the year, since I saw "Deadpool", and not just for bringing a way-more-complex character (than it is assumed to be), to life, but because of his long compromise to fix what Fox broke years ago in that horrible Wolverine film. He lobbied through the years to have THIS film done, the way it is (and honestly, it's probably the best adaptation from a comic book, ever done). "Deadpool" is a film that benefits from multiple viewings and full of really harsh moments that actually challenge the audience rather than merely masturbate it with thrills and explosions... a film that didn't shy off, having his (anti)hero sodomized by his girlfriend. Just saying, the huge balls of this instant classic.
Justice for IXCANUL, LITTLE SISTER, WHITE GIRL and RIGHT NOW, WRONG THEN
Arrival not being included renders the chart worthless.
Yavor - which chart?
sorry, David Ehrlich's
Cris: Yeah, that's kind of weird. Especially since I'm watching The Lobster and, excusing that it's not a 2016 movie by my rules (non-fest internationalist in the HOUSE), I still don't get it at all. This script is incredibly LAZY. Beyond narrating a bit too much, including stuff that definitely SHOULD be expressed naturally, the biggest problem? This is a society that turns people into animals with off-screen science, but here's the rub: Any society at the point of doing that would probably be packed to the gills (pun) with OTHER mad science touches, even in quaint "country" places like the hotel, and...there's nothing else, which strains all credibility and leaves it in this awkward space where it's too literal to be Rhinoceros, but it's too normal to be a cohesive pocket universe where this society would plausibly exist. Also: Colin Farrell's character is an architect, and yet is somehow able to do the procedure that turns people into animals (which, again, is also completely off-screen) by himself? Bullcrap! Can we go back to the days where Zootopia was an Original Screenplay contender? At least the world building there all fit together and the characters didn't suddenly gain skills they shouldn't have for a single scene because it's convenient for the plot.
Jesus Alonso: I wouldn't say stone classic, but I'd guess an Adapted Screenplay nom for Deadpool is more likely than for Lion. Seriously, does everyone forget In the Loop (which was VERY far from BP consideration), was a nominee in 2009 over The Blind Side?
Time: WOW. The person who divided America. The person who absolutely positively confirmed that the electoral college has NO place in 21st century politics. THAT GUY is "Person of the Year"? Nope.
Coco: This is probably going to be really good. Can we just admit, in spite of having the, theoretically, right staff, The Book of Life wasn't THAT worth it.
"with a little help from Sean Penn who she offers to marry again"
Ick. Just beyond ick.
The fuck is wrong with Madonna lately?
@Volvagia - who else, other than Trump, was a bigger story this year? Who wielded more influence? A pretty easy choice to make if you ask me.
@ MDA
Vladimir Putin had a pretty great 2016, if you ask me.
But I would have picked The Grim Reaper as Person of the Year.
Something I forgot to add to my previous post; this from the Time website:
the person who had the greatest influence, for better or worse, on the events of the year.
Trump is the Person of the Year even though I hate him. A lot of bubbling feelings have come to the surface because of his campaign. The world sucks.
"Of the year"--that part doesn't bother me. It's "Person" I have trouble with.
I am watching a tribute to Ryan Murphy presented by Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon. I just can't believe how much Sarandon looks like Bette Davis. The eyes, the expressions she pulls. No wonder she was chosen to play her in "Fued". I am dying to see footage from the antology series!
Rahul, she was thinking "I am raising money for an impoverished African nation - what will get people talking and giving us their money?" Seven mil is incredible.
That Autostraddle article is gold!
I also enjoyed the article on Vulture this week about Crash winning Best Picture in 2006. Some of it was very funny.
Didn't watch the AACTA's, but I did see Geoffrey Rush's Einstein hairdo. It's truly mesmerizing.
Seeing the Sydney Morning Herald as a source on your website...... And how I laughed!
Mario -- ?
Nat: I'd guess he's Australian and the Morning Herald is like their equivalent of The Daily Mail?
David Ehrlich does one hell of an edit, that's for sure. I look forward to his countdown every year. What a happy surprise that he considered Lemonade to be a film!
