BAFTA Winners Announced

Since BAFTA never televises live we learn the winners before we've seen any excerpts from the show. This kills the normal suspense (however non-suspenseful) of "and the winner is..." but if you're trying to preserve that we'll hide the winners until after the jump. We'll deal with the details later once we've seen clips!

THE WINNERS ARE...

FILM The Revenant
DIRECTOR Alejandro González Iñarritu, The Revenant
ACTRESS Brie Larson, Room
ACTOR Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
SUPPORTING ACTRESS Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs
SUPPORTING ACTOR Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies

Will we see upsets in any of the major categories on Oscar night? Picture and Director still feel like they could go a number of ways (given the SAG for Spotlight and the PGA for The Big Short). And yet it's possible that The Revenant's big box office has pushed it out front.

Are Alicia Vikander and Sylvester Stallone way out in front or just slightly out front? My guess is that Vikander is secure in Supporting Actress (it helps to be a lead *sigh* and remember that she was nominated for Ex Machina in this category at BAFTA rather than The Danish Girl which they rightly put in leading) but Supporting Actor actually feels volatile despite Stallone's narrative. If Stallone doesn't pull it out it could actually be anyone on Oscar night.

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY Spotlight
ADAPTED SCREENPLAY The Big Short
CINEMATOGRAPHY The Revenant
EDITING Mad Max Fury Road
MAKEUP Mad Max Fury Road
PRODUCTION DESIGN Mad Max Fury Road
COSTUME DESIGN Mad Max Fury Road
VISUAL EFFECTS Star Wars: The Force Awakens
SCORE Ennio Morricone, The Hateful Eight
SOUND Jon Taylor, The Revenant

It'll be interesting to see how closely Oscar matches in the craft categories. Production Design and Costume Design and Sound feel highly competitive. BAFTA ended up giving 5 prizes to The Revenant and 4 to Mad Max Fury Road and only 1 to most of the other pictures. Will Oscar really only favor those two pictures or might Spotlight and The Big Short be stronger here in the States?

It almost didn't occur to me until today that Carol could go home completely empty-handed at the Oscars. I kept thinking, "Oh, Sandy Powell's got this." But even if she's got this, she might not even have it for Carol.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

I disagree I think Kate is more of a sure thing.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermark

I cannot envision anyone else winning Supp Actor after the insane room reactions to Stallone's GG win and Oscar nomination.

I also think it's Winslet barely ahead of Vikander.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJJ

I take heart that Boyhood won Best Film and Best Director at the Baftas last year. It is getting extremely annoying that voters vote in GROUPTHINK and are unable to look out of the box/narrative. I want Roger Deakins to win more than anything else.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBlueMoon02

Looks like Revenant will win Best Pic at the Oscars and Innaritu making history by winning Best Director 2 years in a row.

Carol looks like getting nothing - just like it got nothing at the Baftas.

And I think Stallone is a shoo in for Supporting Actor. His alleged 'boycotting' the Oscars in solidarity with his black colleagues was a brilliant strategic move.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBette Streep

I loved seeing Winslet win in BSA - well deserved and not category fraud.
Sorry for Carol fans, but seeing MM:FR win for best costume was one of those surprise wins that was really great.
The Revenant winning BP and BD is making me dread the Oscars.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

Yay Kate! It would make me so happy if she could pull off an Oscar win.

Did Rylance attend? Did he recite a poem?

LadyEdith - I agree. I think MMFR deserved its costume design win.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Unfortunately I think Vikander is happening. Two races that immediately come to mind are Lupita vs. Jennifer and Marion vs. Julie. When you have a close race between a hot young fashion darling and an established actress who's already won, the Academy usually defers to the fresh face.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

Many countries do not have the same reverence for their national film awards. Many do not get the ratings of the Oscars or the Golden Globes and are edited down for TV. It's sadly a very common trend.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

Go Kate WInslet for Supporting Actress! Because she's really a supporting actress in her film!

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRob

The Revenant takes the lead in the best picture race. We know that much now. However I wouldn't rule out Spotlight or even The Big Short winning yet. Editing appears to be the key prize as it was years ago and it's thrilling to see Mad Max winning it tonight in London. We all know that in a fair world, George Miller would be taking a prize home.

No surprises at all in the acting categories. The two lead ones are locked and the supporting actor one is practically locked too. Rylance, I believe, is a sure thing even if many predict a sentimental win for Stallone. Best Supporting actress is the only category that seems open of the four as Kate Winslet wins when Vikander is on the right category but her work last year will be the decisive point for her to win the Oscar, I believe.

Not much else to say... Let's hope the speeches are better at the Oscars and thank god for Rebel Wilson, the only person to dare to be actually funny, although Sacha Baron Cohen did make the room feel like ice when he mentioned the Oscars before a smart joke.

So, two weeks to the Oscars and the season will be over.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPablo

Kate Winslet>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Alicia Vikander.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

Carol's lack of awards this season is really bumming me out.

Cate and Kate both looked gorgeous.

My hope is that Mark Rylance will beat out Sly on the big night.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

I finally saw The Revenant this weekend. The girl next to me almost fainted a couple of times. I didn't enjoy being part of that. The thing I liked the most was the score which is getting zero attention.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

@ Peggy Sue "The thing I liked the most was the score which is getting zero attention" I loved the score also and wondered why it wasn't in the mix considering all the other noms for the film. So I looked it up and discovered it wasn't eligible for Oscars.

??????

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJoanne

Kate winslet should try to get lots of picture opportunities with Leo and try the "both of titanic Stars winning at the same year" angle.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVictor S

I think Winslet's win here was a result of being on the home team. Vikander is getting the oscar.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBruno

Quite predictable except for Best Actress, I thot Ronan had it in her bag since she was on home team and they really luv Brooklyn (It scored a nom for Walters and won for Best British Pic) I guess Larson is on a winning streak now, next to Leo and Iñarritu and The Revenant.

I'm so glad Kate won! but I tink that was because her fiercest competitor was rightly nom in the leading cat. So Oscar wise, Kate is still in a risky place, I said the chance is 50/50

The losing streak of Carol is depressing......It should have picked up at least one tech award, I wld luv to see it won Costume!

But the biggest loser of the night is perhaps Deakins, look like he wont win on his 13th nom this time.......sigh........

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

I stopped caring about the awards once Cate arrived on the red carpet. She absolutely slayed without a doubt. What a showstopper.

And I think I'm done caring this season. I get so invested year after year, but the groupthink attitude of voters has become laughable. There is no original thought from all these precursors. I might as well skip following them and just watch the Oscars blindly. So frustrating.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRenton

For decades Best Supporting Actress was the Oscar category most prone to shocking upsets. Then suddenly, after Hudson mercifully lost to Harden, the surprises stopped (No, Tilda was not an upset. The Oscar was totally up for grabs that year). Could this finally be the first time in **fifteen years** we get a Supporting Actress upset?!?

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterryan

Kate winning is such wishful thinking. She’s LOST every time she’s been up against Vikander in Danish Girl (Oscar's absolute favorite type of role in the category). And Oscar likes to spread the wealth. if someone is gonna is upset vikander (which i don't see happening) its gonna be mara.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjeb

I hate this. The Revenant and Innaritu must not win.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRaul

For once, I thought that Vikander will pull off a win in the lead category LOL
Yay for KATE and Rylance!
Logically I am now predicting DiCaprio and Winslet (oh god I am loving this already)
And also Rampling and Rylance as the wild cards cause safe bet is boring.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterFadhil

Raul... just be thankful its not THE BIG SHORT. come on... Inarritu > McKay

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

All I can say is Yay for adorable John Boyega.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPam

I concur that following all these precursors only sour the Oscars for me. It takes all the excitement out of it, especially this year when I really rooted for a film . It might be sour grapes, but I need to dial it down next season.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenteradelutza

I don't think Stallone is at risk. Rylance is famous for his work in Britain, he's a local boy win; the BAFTAs do that.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDeborah Lipp

Hell yeah for Jenny Beavan and IN YOUR FACE SANDY POWELL!!!!!!!!

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJohn Hintergardt

@Bette--John Ford and Joseph Manciewicz won Best Director in consecutive years.

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterbrookesboy

What on earth is everyone talking about with group think and predictability? Yes that's a terrible thing almost every awards season but other than Leo and Brie there are still races in mostly every other major category. Best Picture is all over the place this year, and BAFTA just gave their supporting awards to two non-frontrunners.

There is lots to complain about this awards season, but that is not one of them!

February 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Whatever, I'm just so happy for Kate. May she "upset" at the Oscars.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

Does noone think it's strange that Vikander might win with no realpassion for the performance,I don't think people should win body of work Oscars whilst committing catfraud.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermark

I don't know if there is going to be a discussion of the actual ceremony, but I just want to compliment Stephen Fry (very witty & on form) and Rebel Wilson (very funny). Seeing Leo kiss Maggie Smith was an unexpected highlight.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

I am sorry, but Jenny Beavan DESERVES to win. Powell is always great, but Mad Max had the best costumes of the year, period.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

It is a shame Saorsie Ronan did not win lead actress. We all love Brie Larson but there is no need for this rubberstamping that happens in televised awards season.

I am fine with a steamroll year if the performance is a juggernaut (think Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine) or if the competition is particularly weak (which I guess could be argued is DiCaprio's case this year), but when it's a year full of same level great performances, I prefer to see the wealth spread around a little more.

Regarding the Oscar for Best Picture, now with DGA and Bafta, I think we are set for Iñarritu making history. It will be The Revenant, and it will probably be a full sweep. Unless the prefential ballot allows for a shockeroo and Spotlight nabs Picture by being listed on most number 2 and 3 slots.

Also, my personal choice would be Miller director and Spotlight Picture, which totally means the Academy will go for Iñarritu and The Revenant.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCarmen Sandiego

Still think they'll want to award Spotlight one of the major awards and with Revenant pulling out in front for BP, Ruffalo becomes more likely for Supporting Actor.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEddie

@Carmen Sandiego Ha, I'm hoping for Miller/Spotlight too and yes, I think that means it's going to be Inarritu/Revenant. Oh well, at least I'll have something to whine about.

Re. The BAFTAs. I find them so dull now. They stopped being about British films years ago. I don't understand it; we don't need another Oscars lite. And no other country that I can think of lets their national industry awards be so dominated by foreign movies (at least the Oscars are claiming to be international rather than local when they let non-US films win sometimes). If I was British and I worked in the local film industry I'd be right peeved by BAFTA! Especially since their TV arm does support British television.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermsd

I agree about Larson too. Blanchett in Carol which lead the nominations or Ronan could have won at BAFTA. Do your own thing.

These are some questions I have :

Is Oscar really giving Costume Design to Mad Max?

Will Oscar give both sound awards to Revenant or give mixing to Mad Max?

Will Bridge of Spies get prod design a la Lincoln?

Or will we see the same tech outcomes at Bafta and Oscar?

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJoseph W

@Eddie - unless the "major" award for Spotlight is Screenplay. I'm wondering if it's lost too much steam and voters find it too minor compared to Revenant and Big Short. They might think Screenplay is enough.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

"Does noone think it's strange that Vikander might win with no realpassion for the performance,I don't think people should win body of work Oscars whilst committing cat fraud."

Yes. This is such a weird "body of work" Oscar anyway. When I think of a "body of work" Oscar, I think of people who were really widely considered "due" - Julianne, Paul Newman, Jeff Bridges, or even Leo this year... not someone who managed to crank out a bunch of movies in her first real year of "stardom" (in quotes because she isn't even really known by the general public). Even Rooney Mara has a bigger "body of work" than Vikander.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Suzanne: Yeah, body-of-work-for-the-year awards actually seem pretty rare. The last one I can remember is George Clooney, where no one really cares what movie he won for - he was winning something because he had such an impressive year.
Alicia Vikander is not George Clooney. BUT it's a weird year, and she does fit the hot new star slot that does, frequently, win the supporting actress award. I'm 50/50 on whether she or Winslet takes it.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMike in Canada

It's not body-of-work-for-the-year. I don't care about The Danish Girl, but Vikander is SO good in it.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

I thought Vikander was so messy in that film,I mean she's bohemian at the start full of encouragement then resentful then weepy then an adultress, what was going on.

She's like Connelly type winner.I mean is anybody actually dying to see her in anything.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermark

Vikander is a talented actress with a year long PR push from Weinstein. It's like re-living the year of Gwyneth Pawltrow all over again. Yes she is talented, but she is over-hyped at this point.
I haven't been swept off my feet by her performances but her publicity makes it seem as if she is the second coming.

Once this Oscar season is over, she will have to prove that she deserved it. With 2 films coming out next year it is possible we will all be won over, or not.
Personally I would rather see Kate Winslet win again than see Vikander pick up an Oscar on her first try. But at this point Vikander seems the likely winner.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

@Mark

Yes...

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrick

I have no passion for any of her roles this yr,ex machina was b o r i n g to the point of sleep, only the music lifted me up during that silly dance scene.

February 15, 2016 | Unregistered Commentermark

My idea of groupthink is mostly the fact that they all try to predict the Oscars. And I agree with msd that the BAFTAs following the Oscars so closely and not having their own identity is pretty embarassing. The fact that their two most nominated films (which is definitely a sign of passion) ended up with one win overall is incredibly weird to me. Where did all that support for them go? Did they stop regarding them as highly when they underwhelmed at the Oscars? And about those supporting acting categories, they clearly went with the #2 in line for the Oscar because the frontrunner was not nominated(or nominated for another movie). So yes there's more of a race this year in Best Picture and (I guess) in Best Supporting Actress, and a tech race between The Revenant and Mad Max. But the "I'm going to vote for whatever I think is most likely to win at the Oscars" mentality is quite apparent to me and very disappointing(as it has been for several years now).
