Top of the Lake's Silver Through-Line

As you have undoubtedly heard since it was announced on the internet about 1,000 different times over the course of about six months (as if each meeting was the official official, 'no really official this time!' news, Nicole Kidman will co-star in Top of the Lake season 2 (with Elisabeth Moss returning to her leading role) . It's her first reunion with her Portrait of a Lady director Jane Campion from back before she was fully NICOLE KIDMAN but basically getting there if you know what I mean.

What we didn't know until now is that she will be sporting Jane Campion's favorite hair color just like Holly Hunter did in Season 1 way back in 2013...

Can this be a thing for each season? A gorgeous Oscar winning actress suddenly sporting grey hair even though she's only in her mid 40s to mid 50s? Why should men get all the silver fox action?

Let's pray for Top of the Lake to be renewed in perpetuity (that first season was straight up amazing) and even though they're slow with them -- once every three years? weird, but okay -- might we suggest:

Season 3 (2019) Juliette Binoche at 55
Season 4 (2022) Gwyneth Paltrow at 49
Season 5 (2025) Cate Blanchett at 56
Season 6 (2028) Anne Hathaway at 46
Season 7 (2031) Anna Paquin at 49 (Piano reunion!)
Season 8 (2034) Kirsten Dunst at 52 (we'll just assume she's won the Oscar by then, shut up!)
Season 9 (2037) Alicia Vikander at 49
Season 10 (2040) Elle Fanning at 42 (see: Dunst reasoning)

Sorry. I'll stop now!

Will Abbie Cornish be next.

Abbie got no Oscar, mark...

But in 2040 Dame Campion will be 86, Nathaniel. Might not be topping any more lakes then.

I wonder how much convincing it took for her to don the grey though.

I kinda hope that if there's another season Campion will just go down the line on her past collaborators, as a kind of throwback. Guess Kate Winslet is next! And I like that they take their time with these, as opposed to just churning out a new one every year. It feels more like an event/extended film as a result. I don't even think Campion planned on doing a follow-up until she said the idea for this new season struck her. Can't rush those auteurs!

Anyway, looooove Nicole's look. I'm getting aging hippie with a dark secret vibes. Can't wait!

This picture is everything and is now my picture on my work AIM. It's that good.

I feel like I'd love for someone like Toni Collette to give up on films that only want her to have 3 lines and go join Jane Campion in Top of the Lake.

Maybe while she's bringing back Portrait of a Lady cast members Campion can just throw in Shelley Duvall too. And Barbara Hershey. That'd be super amazing. Also Nicole Kidman's hair is everything.

@Chris James - Yes. Oh my god yes. Has Toni Colette been in a Campion movie?

With Jessica winning a Tony this week for playing another silver fox, it's been a great week for grey.

Go the grey! I know that's just a a wig but the reality is it's probably closer to the colour of her real hair than any other colour she has had for a while. Wouldn't it be amazing if the next step forward for women is to see female movie stars such as Nic letting it grow out naturally. She's the same age as me and I've been growing my colour out and letting the grey through. Constant colouring damages and most women over 40 need extensions or wigs as well to maintain the illusion. Nic looks fab here. She should let it go for real. Can't wait to see this new TotL

This look caught my breath when I saw the photo. VERY excited for S2, even without Nicole

Yes, I am here for this.

In what world is Anne Hathaway gorgeous?

June 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCal

@Derreck, considering how little vanity she has shown in her career I'd say not a lot.

@Cal, in our world for sure, but possibly in every one she exists.
