Queen Viola. And Other Links

Bless Viola Davis forever
A TMZ reporter asks her if Suicide Squad will net her another Oscar nod. Her face at this question! Her quote while laughing:

No. But that's okay. I'll stick with it.

We'll take it she means acting and not critically lambasted supervillain movies. P.S. Have you heard about the hilarious petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes because of  Suicide Squad's abyssmal approval percentage (worse than Batman v Superman's score!). I guess we need a PSA on what "aggregate" means and also a PSA on how to find a good therapist in your neighborhood. In more Suicide Squad news, THR has a story about its rushed production and competing edits. Worth a read if you're curious (but just ignore that confusingly written subheader).

I wanted to read the Vulture link but it leads to the EW article.

Get that actress razzie award, Margot & Viola! Yours to lose now. Worst female characters ever. And congrats for that paycheck. You'll never be poor again.

I have not see The Suicide Squad and although I was looking forward to it when announce I have no plans to see it anymore given the critical reception. But I have to agree that it seems that Margot Robbie is now poised to win a razzie. They love giving these out to up and coming actresses who are involved in much reviled critical fiascos regardless of the actual performance. In the Debicki vs Robbie showdown, mark one on for Debicki. .

I do hope this is the end of Method Actor Jared Leto. I want to see him in good movies but his showmanship is unbearable.

Sonja -- oops. thanks for the catch. I fixed it.

Tony T: I'd guess this is what our nominee line-ups probably look like:

Worst Lead Actor:

Henry Cavill, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Johnny Depp, Alice Through the Looking Glass
Sacha Baron Cohen, Grimsby
Brenton Thwaites, Gods of Egypt
Adam DeVine, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
(Alt for DeVine: Dave Franco, Nerve.)

Worst Lead Actress:

Shailene Woodley, The Divergent Series: Allegiant
Margot Robbie, Suicide Squad/Legend of Tarzan
Tara Strong, Batman: The Killing Joke (She won't win (that'll probably go to either Woodley or Depp's kid), but Razzie would ABSOLUTELY go there for a nomination, unlike Oscar. (Yes, I am still disappointed Amy Poehler didn't make it last year. I hope that was close.))
Lily-Rose Depp, Yoga Hosers
Melissa Rauch, The Bronze
(Alt for Rauch: Tyler Perry, Boo! A Madea Halloween) (Because Razzie regularly goes for the "gender of character, not gender of actor" thing.)

Worst Supporting Actor:

Jared Leto, Suicide Squad
Jesse Eisenberg, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice/Now You See Me 2
Oscar Isaac, X-Men: Apocalypse
Ben Foster, WarCraft
Christoph Waltz, The Legend of Tarzan
(Alt for Waltz: Neil Casey, Ghostbusters 2016) (Even if you like the movie, would Casey's presence be THAT much of a surprise?)

Worst Supporting Actress:

Jennifer Garner, Nine Lives
Paula Patton, WarCraft
Melissa Joan Hart, God's Not Dead 2
Vivica A. Fox, Independence Day: Resurgence
Viola Davis, Suicide Squad
(Alt for Davis: Maria Bello, Max Steel)

"Hello, My Name Is Doris is frank about loneliness, sexual desire, and — perhaps this hits too close to the bone — society’s tendency to write off older women as dear little “characters” without passions or aspirations of their own." - Mark Harris, the Vulture article. This is my favourite quote from the article; hard truth.

I wish and hope that Dianne Wiest gets in on this boom of roles. Not many actors can be hilarious, heartwarming, and devastating like her.

Bitch please, it's the Oscars, not the Teen Choice Awards.

August 3, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterdan

I'd love it if more "movie stars" embraced the Razzies ala Halle Berry & Sandra Bullock. Hollywood makes a lot of shit, why take it all so seriously? Get yours Margot Robbie! I keep hearing she is the MVP of Suicide Squad....

August 3, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterchoog

choog: A performance being the obvious "MVP" of a bad movie hasn't exactly stopped them from nominating a performance before. See also: Sharon Stone being nominated for Catwoman over Alex Borstein or Frances Conroy.

August 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Nick are you critical of how the character are written or how they are portrayed. A world of difference. Robbie is the MVP by all accounts and Davis can't give a bad performance if she tried

August 3, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRami

Rami: Robbie and Davis are probably getting nominated regardless of how "good" they actually are. They're not going to be the end recipients (probably Shailene Woodley and Paula Patton for Actress and Supporting Actress), but this is the same organization that nominated Sharon Stone for Catwoman over, as I already mentioned, Alex Borstein or Frances Conroy.

I wish every weekend were an Oscar weekend, but they're not. Don't lie to us Academy!

If you don't care about superheroes there's a six-month drought to cope with.
