Red Carpet: TIFF Finally Does Couture
Jose here. Color me impressed with all the couture at Toronto this year! Congrats to stylists for bringing it, and since there are so many great looks to discuss, let's get to it! Amy Adams is the epitome of "if it ain't broke", she has rarely looked sexier than she does in this simple Tom Ford design (it's pretty much the same Gwynnie wore to the Oscars, sans cape). Her Rita Hayworth-esque locks and the perfect earrings might just make this her best look in years. No one can pull off as many shades of yellow like Emma Stone, as proved by this textured Chanel minidress, which sees her at her most playful. Rooney Mara wearing color warms my heart, especially when it's such bold pieces as this Aouadi bolero dress, knowing the unique design was more than enough, her makeup and accessories are minimal, love that the strappy sandals make it look as if she's floating. Lupita Nyong'o in Carolina Herrera is the thing fashion photographers dream about, gotta love her red lipstick too. Can she do any wrong? The answer is no.
More looks after the jump.
I love it when Anne Hathaway has zero f*cks to give. Aware of how strange her Rodarte dress was, she paired it with the most divisive of all hairdos: the top knot. Her "come at me" attitude on the red carpet make this look a winner. While I'd usually be all about "the more Nicole Kidman the better", the vertical pattern on this Nina Ricci dress elongates her way too much, perhaps the look would've benefitted from an updo? American Honey stars Riley Keough and Sasha Lane make a gorgeous pair, the former in moody Chanel, the latter in a dress from The Row that should inspire the Olsen twins to make her their spokeswoman. Last but not least, Natalie Portman is radiant in a Prada gown that made me think of Meryl's Sophie's Choice Oscar dress. She's on a roll in this Jackie tour...
Which of these are your favorites?

Is that a terrible wig on Nicole? That dress is filigree and looks uncomfortable, not that I know anything. Meryl Streep hanging with Idris Elba is a good rumor.
At first glance I thought it was Jennifer Connelly in the red dress because Rooney Mara doesn't wear color. She should do it more often.
Lupita is a vision.
Anne is really giving us an I don't care, but it does not work for me. Is this from Zoe? She looks age 6 in mom's old dress. Even I am bored with Amy Adams predictable monochrome column dresses.
PS, I also like the Natalie dress. I would have to see it in person, because the color is unusual, but it looks really pretty.
Emma Stone w/ Lupita in 2nd.
And Portman's pregnant again, like she was that time when she got her Oscar...
Lupita lupita lupita lupita lupita
Remember when Erykah Badu wore her turban to the Oscars? Bring on the Lupita turbans!
I want to have lunch with Emma and Lupita.
Lupita and Amy look great, the rest not so much
I love Portman's gown and look, but Lupita is just amazing. I'm not sure there are adequate words for her - but I think V. may hit the mark with "a vision".
Amy looks fine. Classically presentable and very safe. I'm not blown away but I do appreciate her ability to be elegant. I'm not that fond of the Emma's mini-dress - the material looks fun but the shape is blah. That particularly dress on Mara in that particular photo does not look good - neither the woman or the dress are doing each other any favors. I love Lupita's gown but the headpiece is too big for her lovely face. It's steals too much attention from her and her gown. I can't believe it but I actually like that monstrosity Anne is wearing! I don't understand why but I think it DOES have something to do with the topknot. The whole thing looks playful and fancy and I actually love the impression that she got all dressed up in a fancy dress to go to a party (even though the dress is kinda hideous). It's fun and entertaining and special. OMG that is not a good look for Ms. Kidman. I agree - the long lanky hair does not help since the dress is long and lanky too. The two American Honey actresses look like every other young actress at an event. Meh. And although I agree Tom Ford above, the color looks very pretty and unique, I think Portman's dress looks dowdy. So I am totally shocked to realize that my favorite is Anne Hathaway's crazy choice followed up with Amy Adams and her safe choice.
Of course, if you take that damn thing of Lupita's head - or at least shrink it down some - then Lupita's dress wins by a mile!!
Funny. Totally agree that if you took the headpiece of Lupita, her look would be stunning.
Does Rooney Mara ever smile? She seems eternally awkward, and sweaty, like she is completely miserable going out on the red carpet. Maybe it's just a bad pic of her.
I have not seen the film, but I am doubtful that Natalie Portman can score an Oscar nom for a Jacquie O film. That seems like Hollywood hype, and she would push out some heavyweights.
Natalie looks like she's back playing Padme in Star Wars (in the best way possible)!
I think the red lip is too much for Lupita's look. Mara wins this one for me maybe it is try color on her that gives an edge. Kidman's hair looks horrible, it must be a wig.
